World Social Media Day: 10 golden rules to be 'social', responsibly
Remember the saying, 'Think, before you speak?'
In today's digital world, it's 'Pause, before you share!'
Every June 30, the digital world pauses to celebrate World Social Media Day, a global festivity to honor how platforms like Facebook, X (formerly, Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp have reshaped our conversations and connections.
What began as a nod to the rapid evolution of online communication has grown into an annual reminder: social media connects nearly half the world, sparking movements, lifelong friendships, and sometimes, strife.
But beyond likes and hashtags lies a deeper question – how do we stay 'social' without losing our humanity and mental sanity?
On this special day, let's explore ten golden rules to help you post, connect, and engage responsibly – so the next scroll, tweet, or share becomes a mindful exchange that uplifts rather than divides.
After all, good digital manners make good human connections. Let's dive in!
Know the day, know the history
Understanding why we celebrate grounds our behavior. On June 30, 2010, Mashable initiated this day to mark the global impact of social networks. Since then, users have grown to approximately 4.9 billion globally in 2024. It's a reminder that what began as entertainment has evolved into instruments of learning, activism, and community. Recognizing the day's origin reminds us that social media isn't merely entertainment – it's an evolving force for communication, learning, and even mobilization.

Celebrate the good, but stay critical
Social media has fueled grassroots activism – from the Twitter-fueled protests in Iran and Egypt during the Arab Spring to activist hashtags like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. These show social media's power – but with influence comes responsibility. Alongside sharing, we must also question, verify, and stay alert to echo chambers and misinformation.
Be a thoughtful sharer: Verify before you amplify
As we said, 'Pause, before you share.' Remember, clicking 'share' adds you to the content's diffusion chain.
Before hitting 'share,' pause. Experts stress the need to 'pause and verify' before resharing, a major theme from UN and EU campaigns. According to spectrum-guided etiquette, always verify sources and intent – is it accurate, current, relevant? Misleading posts cause real-world harm. Make it your personal mantra: if you're unsure of the source, don't share.
It's a simple step to curb the spread of fake news. One golden rule: don't click 'share' unless you'd share it face‑to‑face.
Better safe than viral – but wrong.
Hashtag activism: Use hashtags wisely
Hashtags can unite people, ignite change, and frame narratives. But 'hashtag activism' isn't activism unless followed by action – real-world or online. Remember, hashtags are tools, not bandwagons. #MarchForOurLives drew millions of voices; the real measure came when those voices joined protests. Movements like #MeToo (over 19 million mentions) show that hashtags can catalyze action – but real impact comes afterward.
#Hashtag activism raises awareness, but it's not enough. Don't just tag – support, donate, volunteer, and engage thoughtfully.
Mind the algorithm (but don't become its puppet)
Social media platforms rely on algorithms to curate your feed – and these invisible scripts can narrow what you see. Leading figures like Spain's Prime Minister Sánchez are calling for algorithm transparency and accountability. You can't rewrite the code – but you can diversify your network, follow different viewpoints, and turn off personalization settings for more balance.
Be kind, not combative
Online anonymity often emboldens nasty behavior. Spain's leader is even urging governments to tie accounts to real identities to curb abuse. Meanwhile, various communities, like Reddit's r/WomenInNews, instituted rules banning unverifiable screenshots to slow misinformation (no sharing content without attribution or verification). Be courteous. No trolling, no harassment – if/when provoked, don't respond.
Trolls seek attention and reaction. Ignore, block, or mute trolls instead of fueling negativity. Save your energy for people and discussions that matter. Keep in mind, 'netiquette' matters: don't say online what you wouldn't say in person.
Safeguard privacy – yours and others'
Social isn't oversharing. Refrain from sharing personal details – like home addresses, GPS check-ins. Respect boundaries: don't tag people in everything, don't screenshot private moments, don't post addresses or personal info.
Privacy guidelines stress using strong settings, being selective about friends, and respecting confidentiality. Digital footprints last forever: post with care.
Balance engagement with purpose
Strive for authenticity: mix positivity, insight, and inspiration. Whether sharing news, personal stories, or user-generated content, tag thoughtfully, credit sources, and offer context. A well-balanced feed builds trust and connection. Influencers and creators can build communities, but labels matter.
Use your platform for authenticity, not just clicks. If you're blogging, vlogging, or even posting family photos, remember the power these share to create digital footprints – both uplifting and permanent.
Maintain your mental space
Social media is a double-edged sword – entertaining, but potentially overwhelming. Practice digital self-care: mute toxic comments, unfollow negativity, and set usage times. Just like one Redditor suggested, 'delete or turn off comments…comments can change the context of your message.'
Mental health matters. It's okay to curate your experience. Social media should serve you, not stress you.
Reflect and recharge: Be social offline
Social isn't just digital. No substitute exists for laughter in the room, hugs, and shared meals. Step away, breathe, and connect face-to-face. Social Media Day is a great reminder to balance virtual friendships with real ones. Treat it like celebrating your birthday: take a moment offline to enjoy life beyond the feed. Celebrate real-world community: reach out to a friend, walk in the park, savor the moment – real life matters the most.

"Ab aayega Captain Cool powder, oil, deodorant": Fans imagine the wackiest products Dhoni could launch
As news broke that former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase 'Captain Cool', social media lit up with a flurry of hilarious and surprisingly informed reactions. The term, famously linked to Dhoni's unshakeable calm on the cricket field, is now set to become official property. According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, Dhoni's application, filed on June 5 and listed under Class 41 (sports training, coaching, and facilities), was accepted and advertised on June 16. While the trademark is focused on sports services, that didn't stop netizens from imagining a full-blown product universe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Photos Captured the Exact Wrong Moment Read More Undo 'Ab aayega Captain Cool powder, oil, deodorant,' joked one user, summing up the mood online. — Being_Humor (@Being_Humor) Live Events On X (formerly Twitter), another user cheekily imagined a lineup of Captain Cool-branded underwear, condoms, and slippers, before clarifying that the registration is strictly for sports-related services: 'nothing cheeky like that just yet!' — ramnit1983 (@ramnit1983) Another user weighed in on the trend of celebrities trademarking fan-given nicknames: 'Next he'll trademark Thala. Someone will trademark King, Hitman etc. One has already done for letters S R and K.' — rkver2 (@rkver2) Many saw Dhoni's move as a strategic step towards launching his own sports academy or coaching brand. 'Bhai Class 41 is for training, entertainment and sporting,' tweeted another user. 'Woh academy khol raha hai apni. Tael sabun ki dukaan nahi.' — sharesandlife (@sharesandlife) Some couldn't resist taking it a step further. The former skipper was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame earlier this month, alongside greats like Matthew Hayden and Hashim Amla. The ICC praised Dhoni for his 'extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity,' and called him 'one of the game's greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers.'

APM gas price hits ceiling of $6.75 per mmBtu
The price of natural gas used for producing CNG for vehicles and cooking gas was raised 5 per cent for July, following a surge in oil prices triggered by Israel's military strike on Iran. As part of the monthly revision, the price of natural gas from legacy fields operated by state-owned companies was increased to USD 6.75 per million British thermal units, up from USD 6.41, according to a notification from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Oil Ministry. USD 6.75 per mmBtu is the ceiling price for gas from legacy fields, known as APM gas, which accounts for roughly half the input used in producing CNG. It is also utilised in power generation, fertiliser production, and piped directly to households for cooking. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo A higher input gas price would squeeze margins of city gas retailers. City gas retailers may choose to hike CNG prices if the increase pinches them. APM gas price is revised on the first of every month, set at 10 per cent of the average import price of crude oil in the preceding month. But this price is subject to a floor or minimum rate and a ceiling or maximum rate. The ceiling price for 2025-26 is USD 6.75. Live Events According to PPAC, the price of APM gas for the period from July 1 to July 31, 2025, was calculated at USD 6.89 per mmBtu on a gross calorific value (GCV) basis. However, the rate will be capped at the ceiling price of USD 6.75. In the last revision effective June 1, the APM gas price was cut for the first time in two years, dropping to USD 6.41 per mmBtu from USD 6.75 in the previous month. This was the first reduction since the government in April 2023 implemented a new formula to price APM gas. In April 2023, the Union Cabinet accepted an expert committee report to price on a monthly basis the gas from legacy fields, called APM gas, at 10 per cent of monthly average import price of crude oil with a floor of USD 4 and a cap of USD 6.5 per mmBtu. The cap price was to remain unchanged for two years and rise by USD 0.25 annually thereafter. In line with this, the cap rose to USD 6.75 per mmBtu in April 2025. In the first two years, the price of gas using this formula ranged between USD 7.29 per mmBtu and USD 9.12 but the cap ensured that the rate were fixed at USD 6.50 per mmBtu. In April, the price according to this formula came to USD 7.26 per mmBtu but the final rate was USD 6.75 in line with higher cap. In May, the price came to USD 6.93 but was capped to USD 6.75 for consumers. Since there has been a fall in international oil prices in view of uncertain demand outlook, the Indian basket of crude oil averaged around USD 64 in May. Using this as a benchmark, the APM gas price came to USD 6.41 per mmBtu on GCV basis, according to PPAC. But oil prices rose after Israel attacked Iran last month. That rise has translated into higher APM gas price as well. The rise in benchmark also means that the price of gas that ONGC produced from new wells in the APM fields would also go up. The government had allowed ONGC to charge 12 per cent of the oil price for the gas coming from new wells it drills. The higher price was to make up for the capex incurred in drilling new wells. As much as 5 million standard cubic meters per day of gas -- or a 10th of all gas produced by ONGC -- comes from new wells, according to industry sources. APM gas is one produced by state-owned firms Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) from fields that were given to them on nomination basis. This gas is the input that is used in the cooking gas piped to household kitchens as well as turned into CNG for running automobiles, making fertilisers and producing electricity. Prior to April 2023, the price of gas produced from fields covered under the Administered Price Mechanism (APM) regime -- which accounts for 70 per cent of domestic gas production -- was determined semi-annually based on a formula that benchmarked it to average international prices at four gas trading hubs. APM gas is provided to city gas distributors for supply to CNG and residential PNG segments, which together account for 60 per cent of their sales volume. Subsequent to the April 2023 decision, APM gas prices are revised on a monthly basis but subject to ceiling and floor price. The ceiling price now is USD 6.75 per MMBtu and will rise by another USD 0.25 per mmBtu in April next year. APM gas prices had seen wide fluctuations in the years running up to the April 2023 decision. From a low of USD 1.79 per mmBtu in 2021, to a high of USD 8.57 for the six-month period ending March 2023. The rate for difficult fields like KG-D6 of Reliance Industries has been set at USD 10.04 per MMBtu for six months beginning April 1 as compared to USD 10.16 in the preceding six months period, according to PPAC.

India hardens stance on farm sector concessions as India-US trade talks stretch
India-US trade deal (Representative AI image) NEW DELHI: As India-US trade talks stretch into a new week with both sides chasing the July 9 deadline, government has hardened its stance on offering concessions in the farm sector. 'The Indian team may stay longer as crucial talks are continuing, but we don't just want to open up whatever is the demand (from the US) on agriculture as lives of millions of farmers are involved,' said a government source. Last week, India's chief negotiator Rajesh Agarwal and other officials had gone to the US on a two-day visit, but the talks have stretched as the US is also keen to conclude some deals before the pause on reciprocal tariffs – 26% in India's case -- ends in. In fact, on Thursday, US president Donald Trump had announced that a 'very big deal' with India is likely – the seventh time that he had announced an agreement. The Indian industry is also being prepared for dealing with reciprocal tariffs, in case the early tranche of the proposed bilateral trade deal does not work out. For India, a key concern is allowing lower duty import on agricultural products like maize, soybean and dairy products, which is being demanded by the US side. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Privately, several industry representatives have met commerce department brass and suggested that India should agree to the demands from the Trump administration, but government is keen to ensure that it is not a one-sided deal. Officials also conveyed to exporters on Monday that the limited deal, if it works out, will cover only a limited set of products with more tranches likely in the coming months.
