Fahmi, Azalina to collaborate on tightening social media regulation
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his readiness to hold further discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to strengthen the regulation of social media platforms in Malaysia.
Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina's recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children's online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes.
He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country.
'I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC's and the Ministry's experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,' Fahmi told reporters after the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday.
Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director.
Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.
'So, we will look at the best ways to assist the Law Minister in the implementation and drafting of the legislation she mentioned,' he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today accused the human resources minister of misleading the public and interfering in the union's internal affairs, amid controversy surrounding Malaysia's participation in the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC). In a strongly worded statement, MTUC said the minister had no authority to claim the organisation lacked leadership, asserting that the current leadership lies with the Joint Special Committee, which was established by a Court of Appeal order in February this year. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong was singled out by MTUC as being responsible for what it called a failure to ensure proper representation of Malaysian workers at the ILC. 'The minister should be held responsible for the failure of an incomplete Malaysian delegation to the ILC,' MTUC said. 'The MTUC is the most represented organisation of workers in Malaysia. As required by the International Labour Organisation's Constitution, the MTUC is responsible for nominating the workers' delegation, while the minister's duty is merely to deposit the names submitted by MTUC.' MTUC added that preparations for its upcoming leadership elections, scheduled for August 2 and 3, were progressing well and dismissed any suggestion of a leadership vacuum. It also accused the minister of misusing government machinery, including the Attorney General's Chambers, to cover his alleged misconduct. The union noted that Malaysia has been shortlisted for discussion at the ILC regarding its compliance with Convention 98, which concerns the right to organise and bargain collectively. MTUC criticised the minister for failing to ensure that Malaysian workers' representatives were properly registered at the ILC, accusing him of attempting to avoid scrutiny of the country's labour laws, particularly concerning anti-union discrimination. 'If indeed, the minister was sincere in wanting to ensure that workers are represented at the ILC, he would have contacted and discussed with the Joint Special Committee as soon as the invitation from the ILO was received,' MTUC said. The union stressed the importance of having a complete and robust tripartite delegation at the ILC to advance labour reforms and national development, instead of sidelining MTUC's role.

Immigration Department denies issuing viral statement on Korban meat distribution
KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has denied issuing any statement regarding guidelines for the distribution of 'Qurban' (sacrificial) meat at mosques in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. JIM Deputy Director-General (Management) Ismail Mokhtar said the department was aware of the statement, dated June 5, 2025, that had gone viral. 'For the record, the statement is false and has never been issued by JIM,' he said in a statement here today. He also advised the public to always refer to the department's official channels for accurate and authentic information. 'JIM takes the dissemination of false information seriously, especially when it can lead to public confusion. Any unauthorised use of the department's official emblem and name is an offence and may be subject to legal action,' he added. The fake statement, dated June 5, 2025, that went viral, used the name of Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban. Among the things claimed in the statement was that only foreign nationals with valid work permits and visas, or those with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, were allowed to receive Qurban meat at mosques.
