Fahmi, Azalina to collaborate on tightening social media regulation
Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina's recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children's online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes.
He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country.
'I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC's and the Ministry's experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,' Fahmi told reporters after the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday.
Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director.
Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.
'So, we will look at the best ways to assist the Law Minister in the implementation and drafting of the legislation she mentioned,' he added. — Bernama

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated today that Anwar has also ordered appropriate action to be taken in this matter. 'The Prime Minister's Office has taken note of the denial statement by the Pagoh Member of Parliament regarding the allegation of defending the rights of foreigners in the issue of RON95 subsidy targeting. 'As a government that upholds transparency and accountability, the Prime Minister has instructed MCMC to investigate this matter and take appropriate action,' the statement said. Yesterday, Anwar was reported in the Dewan Rakyat to have said that he received a report that an opposition Member of Parliament had defended the right of foreigners to benefit from subsidy rationalisation. Following this, Muhyiddin, who is also a former Prime Minister, denied in a social media post that he had ever made any statement defending the rights of foreigners in the targeting of the RON95 subsidy. He said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) has always been consistent that the benefits of subsidy implementation should prioritise the interests of the people. Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has taken note of the matter and will take immediate and appropriate action based on existing legal provisions. Miti: Malaysia set for RM104b in 2025 investments, trade target unchanged despite global headwinds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has projected 2025's approved investments to amount to RM104 billion involving manufacturing and selected services sectors under the purview of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida). Its Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said this projection takes into account gross domestic product (GDP) forecast, projects currently under evaluation, and potential projects. 'Based on Mida's investment statistics, the first quarter of 2025 approved investments were RM89.8 billion, a 3.7 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. 'Therefore, considering the increasing trend of investment applications to Mida, the investment outlook is expected to maintain positive for the whole of 2025,' he said in a written reply on the Parliament's website yesterday in response to Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) who asked for the government's 2025 investment projection as well as the measures to ensure that export and investment values are not severely affected by rising US tariffs and global geopolitical uncertainty. Tengku Zafrul said the projection remains unchanged for now as the tariff impact is mainly felt by companies that rely heavily on the US market. He added that Miti currently has no plans to revise its 2025 trade growth targets despite the US imposing a 19 per cent tariff. Miti will continue to monitor current developments, especially exports to the US market, and formulate appropriate mitigation strategies, he said. 'Trade performance is expected to experience a slight decline in the second half of 2025 due to reduced demand from the US following the tariff enforcement. 'A more significant impact is expected to be felt in the first quarter of 2026, when trade activity resumes post-tariff implementation,' he said. Miti had previously projected a 5 per cent rise in Malaysia's total trade value to RM3.01 trillion against RM2.87 trillion in 2024. Meanwhile, he said US President Donald Trump's latest announcement on the 19 per cent tariff rate has opened a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to remain competitive alongside other trading partners, especially among Asean member states with similar tariff rates. 'It should be emphasised that Malaysia successfully secured a lower tariff rate without having to compromise on core policies or national sovereignty,' he said. However, he acknowledged that the tariff rate will still have an impact on export and investment performance, and in turn, affect Malaysia's economy. In the long term, he said the imposition of high reciprocal tariffs will cause a global economic slowdown, including in Malaysia, due to rising prices and declining demand, which will indirectly affect Malaysia's economic growth rate and the global economy in general. — Bernama

Comparing women leaders to cows? Do better or lawyer up, Azalina tells politicians
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Politicians who compare women to animals or use religion in such comparisons may be breaking the law, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She reminded political leaders to exercise caution when making such statements. 'To whom it may concern, if you are still comparing female leaders to animals in 2025, congratulations,' she wrote in a post on X last night. 'You might just be breaking several provisions in the Penal Code (Act 574), just a friendly reminder: Section 509, Section 504 and Section 298A. 'If you're mixing in religion, the new Section 507B? Definitely! Do better, or lawyer up!' she added. The Penal Code (Act 574) outlines various criminal offences and their punishments. Section 509 relates to insulting the modesty of a person, and Section 504 covers intentional insult. Section 298A involves causing disunity or ill will between people of different religions, while Section 507B makes it an offence to use threatening, abusive or insulting words that cause distress and fear. Azalina, who is also Pengerang MP, did not name any individuals, but her remarks appeared to be directed at two PAS leaders, based on news articles attached to her post. They were PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and the party's Maran youth wing information chief Muhammad Salman Al Farisi. On Sunday, Muhammad Salman sparked backlash over a social media post that likened women leaders to cows, using it as an analogy drawn from his experience managing livestock. He claimed that in his observations, female cows often lead the herd — deciding on grazing, resting and return times — while bulls only serve to protect the group. The analogy was widely condemned as sexist and backward by several politicians, including some from Perikatan Nasional (PN), of which PAS is a component party.
