Barcelona Face Possible Champions League Sanctions

Barcelona could face serious sanctions from UEFA, including a potential points deduction, after allegedly breaching financial rules for a second time. According to a report in The Times, the Spanish club are once again under scrutiny for how they've presented their finances to comply with UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. The club had already been fined €500,000 last October for incorrectly including income from so-called 'financial levers' in their profit and loss figures. Those levers involved selling off future earnings, such as a percentage of broadcasting rights, to raise immediate funds. One such deal brought in €267 million after Barcelona agreed to sell 10% of their La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years. However, UEFA ruled those profits couldn't count towards FFP limits, describing them as 'disposal of intangible assets'. Clubs are allowed to lose up to €200 million over three years under FFP, but UEFA's financial control board had warned Barcelona that any further breach would result in tougher punishment. That could now mean squad restrictions for next season's Champions League, or even a points deduction in the new league-format stage of the competition. Chelsea and Aston Villa are also under investigation, though both are expected to escape with fines as first-time offenders. Chelsea are said to have sold their women's team to a related company in an attempt to balance the books – something the Premier League allowed, but UEFA may not. Villa, meanwhile, reportedly spent more than 90% of their revenue on wages, breaching UEFA's squad cost cap, which will be fully enforced from the 2025–26 season. For Barcelona, however, this is a case of repeat offending. Tags: FC BarcelonaFFPFinancial RulesUEFA

Diaz Out of Morocco Friendlies But Says ‘This is Home'

Morocco's Brahim Diaz has confirmed he won't feature in the upcoming friendlies against Tunisia and Benin due to fitness concerns – but says he's fully committed to supporting the squad from the sidelines. 'It's been a good year, but a very tough one. I'm happy to be here with the national team. As I've always said, this is our home and our family. I'm just really pleased to be part of it,' the Real Madrid playmaker told the Royal Moroccan Football Federation's website. Despite being ruled out of action due to a muscle injury in his adductor , Diaz says that his presence with the group still matters. 'Unfortunately, I can't play in the two matches, but I'm here to support the team. We feel really comfortable together, and I'm happy to be with the players,' he added. The 25-year-old also spoke about keeping sharp while out of match action. 'Even if you're not playing, when you feel at ease in a place, it makes a huge difference. I'm training, doing fitness work, getting myself ready to be at my best again. We're preparing well and we're really enjoying our time with the squad.' 'So much love and appreciation' Diaz rounded off with a heartfelt message to Moroccan fans, who've flooded him with messages of support. 'Thank you so much to all the fans. I've received so much love and appreciation. It makes me want to give back even more – and I will. I'll do everything I can for you. I love you as much as you love me. Thank you.' Morocco team doctor Christophe Baudot confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying Diaz is continuing treatment at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. 'He won't be ready in time for the Tunisia match,' said Baudot. 'We'll assess his progress ahead of the second game.' Diaz started Madrid's final league match against Real Sociedad but was forced off in the 55th minute. His absence is a blow for Walid Regragui, who is already dealing with several injuries in the squad. Nayef Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Ghanem Saïss and Chemsdine Talbi are all unavailable, while Abdessamad Ezzalzouli remains a doubt. In response, Regragui has handed a first senior call-up to FAR Rabat midfielder Amine Zahzouh, one of the standout players in Morocco's top flight this season. Zahzouh scored 11 goals and provided 13 assists in 43 appearances, finishing the campaign as the Botola Pro's top playmaker. The 23-year-old was already training with Morocco's local-based national team at Maâmora and joined the senior squad for Tuesday's session. Morocco's upcoming two friendlies in Fez – against Tunisia on June 6 and Benin on June 9 – are part of the build-up to next year's Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Canizares Sees Achraf Hakimi Among Top Ballon d'Or Contenders

Former Spanish goalkeeper Santiago Canizares ruled out Osmane Dembele as a top contender for the Ballon d'Or, instead naming Achraf Hakimi as one of the leading candidates. Highlighting Hakimi's stunning performances during the season, the former goalkeeper stressed that the Atlas Lion had an impressive season with PSG. He also tipped Vitinha as one of the contenders who should enter the race for the Ballon d'Or. 'Achraf had an impressive season. Vitinha is PSG's leader in terms of play. In my opinion, the race should be between Vitinha and Achraf,' Tribuna quoted the former Valencia goalkeeper as saying. Hakimi made headlines recently after scoring the opening goal during PSG's 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. Following the game, leading French sports outlet L'Equipe hailed Hakimi as the first player to score for a French club in a European final in over three decades. The win saw PSG win its first-ever Champions League trophy. Hakimi has been named as part of the UEFA Champions League Team of the season after his contribution to PSG's historic run to win the European title. The Moroccan full-back is one of seven PSG players named in the squad , alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Ousmane Dembélé, and Désiré Doué. In May, he was also named the best right-back in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. Meanwhile, a hashtag recently surfaced on X and other social media of many commenters emphasizing that Hakimi should win the Ballon d'Or.
