'Bit of a feel about her': New level Within reach for Baker filly

The Australian28-07-2025
Trainer Bjorn Baker is quietly confident exciting filly Within The Law can go to another level in the spring as he sets his sights on the upcoming Princess Series.
Within The Law is one of several spring contenders set to step out at Tuesday's barrier trials at Rosehill Gardens with the filly set to line up in a 900m heat.

The daughter of Lucky Vega is on the third line of betting at $8 for the Group 1 Flight Stakes with Baker keen to follow the tried and true three-year-old fillies path through the spring, which kicks off with the Group 2 $300,000 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 23.
'She is going super,' Baker said.
'We will go through the fillies series and I think she has come back a little bit bigger and stronger.
'You don't get carried away but she has the temperament and everything about her suggests maybe she can be a filly that can go on to that next level.
'With two-year-olds, it's always a bit of a question mark but I have a bit of a feel about her.'
It was a remarkable two-year-old season for Within The Law that could have ended in disaster.
She won the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes before escaping serious injury when she went through the running rail and lost her rider in the Group 1 Golden Slipper.
Within The Law was able to get back to the races to finish third in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes and then came a close second to Nepotism in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.
'She did a great job and is more of a raceday racehorse rather than a trackworker,' Baker said.
'From that point of view I think, she may be able to step up another level.'
She won't be the only two-year-old stepping out on the morning with a plethora of youngsters lining up, including Skyhook, West Of Swindon, State Visit, Blitzburg, King Of Pop, Memo and North England.
Baker also has last start Group 1 Sydney Cup winner Arapaho having his first trial over 1000m in a heat that also includes stablemate Perfumist.
Group 1 performer Lindermann is among the Chris Waller-trained spring hopefuls set to step out while Canadian Group 1 winner Moira is in the same 900m heat.
Waller will also saddle up his first trialist in the Godolphin royal blue with Commemorative in a 900m heat.

Michael Voss 'unanimously endorsed' by Blues board to coach into 2026 AFL season

Carlton coach Michael Voss has been backed to coach into 2026 by incoming Blues chief executive Graham Wright. After a lengthy board meeting at Princes Park on Wednesday, where Voss's position was on the agenda, the Blues have publicly backed him to continue as coach. Wright, who will officially take over from Brian Cook next week, presented to the board at the meeting. "We were clear following round 16 that we would utilise these remaining games to make calm, rational and fully informed decisions that will take our football club forward and that is what we will continue to do," Carlton president Rob Priestley said in a statement. "The first of these has been in relation to our senior coach, which we are now in a position to provide clarity on following last night's scheduled board meeting. "Last night, Graham (Wright) presented a recommendation to the board of directors that Michael remains as our senior coach into next season. "This recommendation was unanimously endorsed by the board. "For the last few months Graham and Michael have been meeting regularly, during which time they have been engaged in open and honest dialogue with one another on what is required for us to evolve as a football side. "Michael's ability to lead our football club this year in the face of incredible pressure has displayed the attributes of a strong and selfless leader." Voss has been under immense pressure following a horror season that will see the Blues miss the finals for the first time since 2022. The Blues have crumbled this year and they sit 13th on the ladder with a 7-13 win-loss record. "Carlton always comes first for our coach, and Graham and Michael share a clear and aligned view on the opportunities to improve football performance," Priestley said. "We want to make it absolutely clear that Michael Voss is the coach of the Carlton Football Club and he will remain the coach of the Carlton Football Club." Carlton hosts finals-bound Gold Coast at Docklands Saturday night, with Voss to give his weekly media conference on Friday. AAP

Wallabies veteran Nic White backtracks on retirement to face Springboks

Wallabies scrum-half Nic White has been included in the Wallabies' initial Rugby Championship squad, less than a week after playing what appeared to be his farewell Test. White announced his international retirement prior to the Wallabies' 22-12 victory over the British and Irish Lions in Sydney last Saturday night. But a hamstring injury to Jake Gordon has seen White reverse his retirement plans for the time being. He was included as one of three scrum-halves in the Wallabies' 35-player squad to face the Springboks in back-to-back Tests in South Africa. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has opted to promote the uncapped Ryan Lonergan, who joins Tate McDermott and White in the wider squad for the opening two Rugby Championship rounds. Lonergan is one of three uncapped players selected, alongside winger Corey Toole and ex-All Blacks prop Aidan Ross. Playmakers Tane Edmed and James O'Connor have also been included. Edmed has been called up to replace first-choice fly-half Tom Lynagh, who was ruled out with concussion after falling victim to an illegal clean-out in the third and final Lions Test. Western Force hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa has been officially added to the group, having answered a late call ahead of the final Lions Test after injuries to David Porecki and Matt Faessler last Thursday. Porecki subsequently announced his retirement this week. Queensland trio Josh Flook, Josh Nasser and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto are the other three new faces in the squad. The Wallabies face the Springboks in Johannesburg on August 17 AEST, before travelling to Cape Town for a return bout with the world champions the following week. "It's pleasing to be able to keep the core of the group together, while also leaning on some depth and fresh bodies," Schmidt said. "We're very conscious of how difficult it is going to be, playing South Africa on their home turf over two consecutive weekends. "The group has made some positive steps throughout the start of the Test season but we all know there is a lot of hard work ahead of us." Forwards — Angus Bell, Nick Champion De Crespigny, Nick Frost, Langi Gleeson, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Josh Nasser, Zane Nonggorr, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Billy Pollard, Tom Robertson, Aidan Ross, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Will Skelton, James Slipper, Carlo Tizzano, Taniela Tupou, Rob Valetini, Jeremy Williams, Harry Wilson Backs — Ben Donaldson, Tane Edmed, Josh Flook, Len Ikitau, Max Jorgensen, Andrew Kellaway, Ryan Lonergan, Tate McDermott, James O'Connor, Hunter Paisami, Dylan Pietsch, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Corey Toole, Nic White, Tom Wright AAP/ABC
