Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh due to a hamstring injury

India Gazette09-07-2025
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh.
He sustained a hamstring injury on his right leg while batting during the final ODI against Bangladesh, according to the ICC website.
The series is scheduled to begin from Thursday, 10 July. Hasaranga, who played a pivotal role in the ODI series to help Sri Lanka turn around the game in the first ODI against Bangladesh, inflicting a record collapse, picked up an injury during the final ODI.
The hosts, who clinched the ODI series 2-1, will not be opting for a replacement for Hasaranga, while he will return to Colombo to commence his rehabilitation process at the High Performance Centre.
Charith Asalanka will lead the Sri Lankan side, who have made a number of changes to their T20I squad, after losing to New Zealand early this year.
Coming to the match, Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis slammed his sixth ODI hundred, which guided the hosts to a comfortable 99-run victory over Bangladesh at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
With this win, the Islanders clinched the three-match ODI series 2-1, as per the International Cricket Council (ICC) official website.
Mendis smashed a superb 124 from just 115 deliveries as Sri Lanka amassed 285/7 in the series decider, and that proved too much for Bangladesh as they were bundled out for 186 in reply.
It saw Sri Lanka clinch a 2-1 series triumph, with Mendis hitting his sixth ODI century and deservedly named Player of the Series for his 225 runs across the three matches
Sri Lanka Squad:
Charith Asalanka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Avishka Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Chamika Karunaratne, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Binura Fernando, and Eshan Malinga. (ANI)

Harbhajan Singh pulls up Ajit Agarkar for ignoring ‘X-factor' in India's Asia Cup squad: ‘Team would've been stronger'

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh is not at all impressed with the selectors' decision to ignore Mohammed Siraj for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 despite a sensational England tour. The premier pacer was the standout bowler in the five-match Test series against England with 23 scalps. He was the difference maker in the two Tests India won at Edgbaston and the Oval. However, the selectors went ahead with Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana as three frontline pacers for the multi-nation tournament. While Prasidh Krishna was picked in the reserves. Harbhajan Singh reacted to the Ahmedabad plane crash Siraj's last T20I appearance came in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and following India's title win, he has been sidelined from the shortest format setup. With Gautam Gambhir stepping in as head coach, the pacer no longer figures in the team's T20 plans. Harbhajan pointed out that Siraj has been in incredible form, and the selectors missed out on his X-factor by not picking him for the multi-nation tournament. 'I feel that Siraj's name should have been included as well. Siraj bowled very well in the recent series. Yes, he did a lot of bowling in England, but he also got adequate rest. So he could have been included. If he had been taken, the team would have looked even stronger. The bowling unit would have seemed stronger. I feel that the 'X-factor' that Siraj brings might be somewhat missed," Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. 'Shreyas Iyer's name could have been there' The former spinner also weighed in on Shreyas Iyer's exclusion, stating that the 30-year-old had done everything possible to push his case for a T20I comeback, and admitted that the decision to leave him out came as a surprise. 'I had hoped he (Shreyas Iyer) would get a place in the team. He scored a lot of runs, played in the IPL final, and was in very good form. I thought his name could have been there. As for whose spot he would take, you have to see whose place it would have been. When someone has to be included or left out, a spot is made. But I did not see Shreyas Iyer's name there, which surprised me a little," he added.

Priyanka Chaturvedi slams BCCI over participation in Asia Cup Cricket

New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for announcing the Indian squad for the Asia Cup Cricket 2025, which includes a clash against Pakistan, despite the neighbouring country withdrawing from the upcoming Hockey Asia Cup hosted in to her official X handle, Chaturvedi expressed her disapproval, saying,'While Pakistan Hockey team snubbed the Asia Cup Hockey matches hosted in India, our BCCI is super keen to keep the cricket match between the two going by announcing the India Team for Asia Cricket Cup. Can't imagine the betrayal the families of those who lost their loved ones in Pahalgam must feel." While Pakistan pulled out of the Hockey Asia Cup citing security concerns, the BCCI proceeded with finalising India's squad for the cricket tournament, which could see the arch-rivals face each other.'Why isn't Pakistan coming? Why are they not participating? This Tournament Is Very Important For...: Harmanpreet Kaur Eyes Maiden World Cup Title On Home Soil

Hosts India have announced their squad for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup 2025, which is scheduled to be played from September 30 to November 2. Harmanpreet Kaur is set to captain India for the first time in the Women's ODI World Cup and she hopes to lead them to their maiden title. Overall, this is the fifth ODI World Cup for Harmanpreet as she looks forward to what is a very important next few months for her and her side. "Personally, this tournament is very important for me. This is a home World Cup. Home World Cups are special for every player. I have a lot of experience batting at No.4, I am just looking to contribute to the team," said Harmanpreet in the press conference. "We are really excited for the World Cup. We are having training camps. We are preparing ourselves mentally and physically," he added. A notable omission for India is Shafali Verma who also missed out on a spot in the recent ODI series against England. The opener had returned to the T20I side in the same series and was a part of the India 'A' side against Australia 'A'. However, the selectors have opted for stability as the team heads into this all-important tournament. "She is playing for India 'A' in Australia. She is a part of the system. We are keeping an eye out for her. The more she plays, the more experience she will gain for the future," the Indian captain said. "Our team did well in England. We have been working on this squad for a long time now. I think the team we have picked is the best, so we don't want to play around with the team ahead of the World Cup. We just want Shafali to keep playing and gain some experience," she added. "The same team played in the England series and we have been playing together for a long time now. Team looks quite balanced to me and hopefully, in both - Australia series and the World Cup, we will play our best cricket," she said.
