Govt Plans Mechanical Sweep Of Bad Air Woes
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta and environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday attended a special demonstration showcasing the functioning of mechanical road sweeping (MRS) machines, water sprinklers and advanced anti-smog guns.
Govt announced plans to hire similar machines to tackle pollution, one of the most pressing issues the national capital faces, said Gupta.
"We are trying to deploy these machines in every constituency to ensure proper cleaning," CM pointed out. She said all cleaning machines were highly advanced and available in different variants, including electric ones. "We are planning to hire electric machines so that they do not add to pollution," she added.
Gupta said MRS machines were equipped with multiple functions, including sweeping, cleaning, water loading and unloading, and litter picking.
On May 20, the chief minister announced that the cabinet approved a comprehensive sanitation and dust control plan for roads maintained by Public Works Department. According to it, PWD will deploy 250 water sprinklers integrated with anti-smog guns, 70 MRS machines integrated with 210 water sprinklers and anti-smog guns, along with 18 dump vehicles and 18 water tankers.

Govt said the demonstration was held at Delhi Secretariat. The high-tech machines included a water sprinkler machine integrated with an anti-smog gun, an electric mechanical road sweeping machine, a CNG mechanical road sweeping machine, a litter-picker machine and a water jetting machine.
Each assembly constituency will receive high-tech equipment for controlling air pollution. Delhi will soon be equipped with 460 sprinkler machines, 70 MRS machines, 70 litter-picker machines, water tankers and dust dump vehicles, said CMO.
The machines will be equipped with technologies such as GPS, CCTV, AQI monitors, video analytics, mobile apps and IoT sensors.

was a serious issue. "Dirt and dust accumulating along roads have been continuously deteriorating the capital's air quality, adversely impacting public health. To tackle this challenge, Delhi govt made special provisions in this year's budget for deploying advanced machines for street cleaning."
Govt said each electric sweeper was equipped with a sweeping width of 3.5 metres. It can clean 40-45km of roads in one shift and contains an 880-litre water tank, expandable to 2,000 litres. The machine is effective in removing not just dust but also pebbles and small stones.
The litter-picker machine, can collect everything from pebbles to glass bottles, can operate in ride-on or walk-along mode. It includes a 220-litre bin and can function for 8-10 hours continuously.

Maruti Suzuki targets 35% of vehicle dispatches via railways by FY31 with new Manesar terminal
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is betting big on railways for its logistics network, aiming to dispatch 35 per cent of its vehicles through trains by 2030-31, up from 24 per cent last year. The announcement comes as the company inaugurated its second in-plant railway siding at its Manesar facility on Tuesday, now the largest GatiShakti multi-modal cargo terminal in the country. The development is part of a larger push by the carmaker to reduce its carbon footprint and streamline dispatch operations. 'We have systematically increased vehicle dispatches through railways, from just around 5 per cent in FY 2014-15 to 24 per cent last year,' Takeuchi said. He further noted that the company became the first automaker to get an automobile-freight-train-operator licence in India. 'Since then, we have dispatched over twenty-five lakh passenger vehicles using railways.' The Manesar siding is part of the 126-km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC), connecting Sonipat to Palwal. It is being executed by Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Ltd (HORCL), a joint venture in which Maruti Suzuki has invested Rs 325 crore. An additional Rs 127 crore has been spent by the company for internal yard development, taking the total investment to Rs 452 crore. Spread over 46 acres within the Manesar plant, the facility features a fully electrified corridor with four full-length rake tracks and one escape track, covering a total of 8.2 km. It will serve 17 dispatch hubs and 380 cities, covering models produced at Gurugram and Manesar plants. Export ports like Mundra and Pipavav will also be connected to the terminal. The company had earlier built a similar in-plant railway siding at its Gujarat plant in March 2024, becoming the first automaker to do so. (With PTI inputs)
