Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Sunday initiated an enforcement drive to eliminate unauthorised hoardings and banners promoting tobacco products throughout the city, marking a significant step in the ongoing battle against tobacco advertising violations.
The operation focused on removing illegal advertisements that had proliferated across key public areas, including bustling markets, educational institutions, and transportation hubs. These locations, which see heavy foot traffic from students, families, and commuters, had become hotspots for tobacco-related promotional content that violated existing anti-tobacco legislation.
During Sunday's operation, municipal teams systematically identified and removed dozens of non-compliant advertising material that were installed without proper authorisation.
The removed content included everything from large-scale hoardings to smaller promotional banners that were affixed to walls, poles, and other public infrastructure. Municipal authorities have issued formal warnings to both advertisers and shop owners who facilitated the placement of these illegal advertisements.
"Our primary concern is protecting vulnerable populations, especially our youth and children, from exposure to content that promotes unhealthy habits.

We are putting everyone on notice that we will not tolerate violations of anti-tobacco advertising laws. Shop owners who allow their premises to be used for illegal tobacco advertising will face consequences alongside the advertisers themselves," mayor Saikat Patra said.
He added that future violations would result in strict penalties, including potential fines and legal action under existing tobacco control laws.
The enforcement action draws its authority from the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, a federal legislation that explicitly prohibits tobacco product advertisements in public spaces. The law represents part of India's broader public health strategy to reduce tobacco consumption and protect citizens from the harmful effects of tobacco marketing.

'When we got in two and a half years back, it was a mobility player doing really well. Unfortunately, it has decided to get into food delivery themselves. That has made us take notice of the conflict and therefore we're planning to go separate ways on this,' CEO Harsha Majety told analysts. The development comes as Swiggy's loss for the June quarter widened to Rs 1,197 crore from Rs 611 crore a year ago, even as revenue from operations surged 54% to Rs 4,961 crore. Quick commerce remained the company's biggest growth driver. Instamart's gross order value doubled year-on-year to Rs 5,655 crore, aided by a 26% jump in average order value to Rs 612 from its basket-building feature Maxxsaver. Contribution margins improved by 97 basis points sequentially to -4.6%, though the segment posted a loss of Rs 896 crore. The rupee recovered 15 paise on Thursday to settle at 87.65 against the US dollar, bouncing back slightly from its all-time closing low, helped by softer crude oil prices and suspected intervention by the Reserve Bank of India . After plunging 89 paise on Wednesday—its steepest single-day fall in over three years—market participants said the rupee saw intraday support around the 87.75 level, where the RBI is believed to have stepped in to curb volatility, PTI reported. "Today, the RBI is suspected to have intervened around the 87.75/USD level to control volatility, which led the rupee to appreciate to 87.52/USD. A recovery in the equity market also helped stabilise the rupee at the current level," said Harsimran Sahni, EVP & Head - Treasury, Anand Rathi Global Finance. The local unit opened at 87.66 per dollar, touched a high of 87.51 and a low of 87.74, before closing at 87.65.
