Punjab farmers' body call for ‘rail roko' on May 7 against ‘illegal, forced' land acquisition

Indian Express05-05-2025
The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) has announced a statewide Rail Roko protest on May 7 at Devidas Pura railway station in Amritsar district along the Amritsar–Delhi railway line, to oppose alleged illegal and forceful acquisition of farmland in Punjab without fair compensation. The call has come at a time when the border districts of Punjab are under high security alert and mockdrills of blackouts have begun. Amritsar is a sensitive border disirct having Wagah border. Sarwan Singh Pandher, leader of KMSC said,' the call is of a day and whether to continue it ahead or not depends on the response of administration.'
More protest points will be added on May 8 if things are not resolved well in time, warned Pandher.
The announcement was made by KMSC's state president Sukhwinder Singh Sabhra, general secretary Rana Ranbir Singh, and leader Sarwan Singh Pandher in a Sunday late evening meeting held at Amritsar. The leaders accused the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, of turning the state into a 'police state' where land is being acquired under Bharatmala and other central projects across districts including Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Tarn Taran without following due legal and compensation processes.
'For the past three years, we have led protests at several locations where hundreds of farmers have been denied their fundamental rights. Lands have been seized without fair or timely compensation,' said Pandher. 'In many cases, landowners have not yet received awards, yet authorities are moving in to forcibly acquire their land.'
The situation remains tense in villages like Saiduke (Amritsar district), where heavy police deployment was reported as authorities moved to occupy farmland ok Saturday , he told. Farmers, however, reclaimed possession in some areas. 'This high-handed approach, disguised as development, is only helping corporate interests while pushing landowners into distress,' said Sabhra, warning that the state government will have to face consequences if the concerns are not addressed.
Preparations for the May 7protest are reportedly underway at a 'war footing' level. The leaders also cautioned that if the government does not respond by May 8, more rail roko protest points, including Basti Tenka Wali in Ferozepur, will be activated. 'The agitation may intensify further across the state,' said Rana Ranbir Singh.
The farmers acknowledged the inconvenience the protest may cause to the public but stressed that the issue was a matter of survival for thousands of farming families. 'Our lands, worth crores, are being taken away for free or at throwaway prices. People are willing to lay down their lives rather than give up their land without justice,' the KMSC leaders stated.

India was fastest fastest-growing economy in world with 6.5% growth; Op Sindoor was a symbol of unity: President Murmu

New Delhi: In her fourth Independence Day eve address to the nation, President Droupadi Murmu underscored India's economic resilience, defence self-reliance, and unity in the face of global challenges, calling the country the fastest-growing major economy with a GDP growth rate of 6.5% in the last fiscal. "With a GDP growth rate of 6.5% in the last fiscal, India is the fastest growing among the major economies in the world. Even amid stress in the global economy, demand at home is pacing ahead. Inflation has remained under control. Exports are rising. All key indicators show the economy in the pink of health," President Murmu said. The President said India's progress in self-reliance in the defence sector had aided Operation Sindoor, India's response to the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April. Operation Sindoor, as well as the diplomatic visits undertaken by the all-party parliamentary groups in the wake of the conflict, reflected the unity within the country, she said. "Operation Sindoor showed that our armed forces are prepared to meet any eventuality when it comes to guarding the nation. With strategic clarity and technical capability, they destroyed terrorist hubs across the border," she said. Operation Sindoor was also a test case of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in the defence sector, she said. 'The outcome has proved that we are on the right path. Our indigenous manufacturing has achieved the critical level that makes us self-sufficient in meeting many of our security requirements," she added. She also noted the progress made in developing crucial infrastructure such as roads and railways, especially in operating railways in the Kashmir valley. India has expanded and strengthened the National Highway network under the Bharatmala programme, which targets building nearly 50,000 km of new national highways in the country. "The Railways too have innovated, introducing new types of trains and coaches equipped with the latest technologies. The inauguration of the rail link in the Kashmir valley is a major accomplishment," she said. Murmu also stated that India's growth in digital payment infrastructure and the IT sector had propelled growth. The next stage of growth is Artificial Intelligence, she said. "Nearly all villages have 4G mobile connectivity, and the remaining few thousand will be covered soon. This has made possible large-scale adoption of digital payment technologies, in which India has become a world leader in a short span," she said. Murmu said India's increased spending on social sector schemes reflected the government's commitment to uplifting marginalised communities and the poor. She also called on the country's citizens to buy local products to promote 'Swadeshi' and help India become self-reliant. The President noted India's strong position in sports and the space sector. The President's annual Independence Day eve address came at a time of geoeconomic fragmentation and global trade wars between some of the world's biggest economies. Earlier, US President Donald Trump referred to India as a 'dead economy' in his imposition of sanctions against the world's most populous country for importing Russian oil. The Chinese export control order on rare earth magnets has impacted crucial sectors such as electronics, automobiles, and renewable energy generation. India is huddling with other nations, including the US, to counter such supply chain disruptions. The statements also come ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China for the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation meeting, which starts on 31 August.

‘Assi jitt gaye': farmers, labour unions welcome move… but wait for withdrawal of notification

As the Punjab government withdrew its controversial land pooling policy on Monday following intense state-wide protests, farmers and labour unions welcomed the decision and said that it was a victory of the people of the state. Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), said, that the government was forced to withdraw the policy owing to pressure from the people. 'It is the people's victory. The Punjab government had to withdraw it's own order and this was possible because of the combined effort of Punjab's farmers, Mazdoor unions, and people from all walks of life. Otherwise, the government was hell-bent on acquiring 65,533 acres of fertile land, which was nothing short of an act of theft from farmers. Farmers had said that not even an inch would be given to the government, so they had no choice but to withdraw the policy. It's not that they had any special concern for farmers.' He, however, cautioned that technicalities needed to be studied. 'We need to see whether the notification has also been withdrawn. The policy was passed by the Punjab Cabinet, so we must examine if it has been scrapped in letter and spirit. We will discuss this in our meeting soon,' he said. KMM had planned a mahapanchayat on August 20 in Jalandhar outside the PUDA office and is yet to decide whether it will be cancelled. Meanwhile, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called an emergency meeting on Tuesday to decide the next course of action. SKM leader Prem Singh Bhangu, who is president of the All India Kisan Federation, said, 'The widespread resentment and anger of farmers and landless people in the state has compelled the government to withdraw this anti-people policy. It is the moral and political defeat of the government and the victory of the people. The notification must also be withdrawn immediately. We will continue our protest for other demands until the government abandons its pro-corporate policies and addresses farmers' genuine problems.' BKU Dakaunda general secretary Jagmohan Singh Patiala recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement after repealing the three farm laws in 2021. 'Soon, we will hear from AAP leaders that the policy was good but farmers could not understand it — just like Modi had said. CM Bhagwant Mann will also say the same. But Punjab has always stood against injustice, and AAP sensed the anger in villages, so they had to bow to public pressure,' he said. Several villages had even banned AAP leaders from entering their villages and had also put up boards with slogans such as 'Bhagwant Mann Bhajao, Punjab Bachao' and 'Kejriwal Bhajao, Zameen Bachao'. Didar Singh Malak, from Malak village in Jagraon constituency, said, 'Our village was the first to put up such posters. AAP leaders are still not welcome here. They can't regain the trust now. Assi jitt gaye.' However, Neel Garg, chief spokesperson of AAP Punjab, defended the government's stand in a post on X, stating, 'The land pooling policy was introduced in the interest of farmers. The AAP has always stood with the farmers. If farmers do not like this policy, why should we impose it? Therefore, respecting the voice of the farmers, we are withdrawing it.'

Farmers hold ‘motorcycle protest marches' against Punjab's land pooling policy

Even as the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the Punjab government's land pooling policy for now, farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) on Monday (August 11, 2025) held 'motorcycle protest marches' in parts of the State, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the policy. Terming the land pooling policy as anti-farmer and farm labourers, scores of protesters, riding motorcycles, staged demonstrations by raising anti-government slogans against the policy and the State government. 'There's huge resentment against the policy in the agricultural community, yet the State government is adamantly continuing with it. We won't let it happen. Today, farmers and people from other walks of life came out on the roads in large numbers across most districts of the State, which clearly shows their anger over the policy. We firmly oppose it,' senior KMM leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said. Demanding the immediate withdrawal of the policy, Mr. Pandher warned the government of an intensified agitation if its wasn't. 'We are going from village to village to make people aware of the ill-effects of the policy. The Punjab government wants to take away our fertile lands to eventually benefit business houses. We will not give our land. We will stage a demonstration in Jalandhar on August 20, and will intensify our agitation if the government doesn't withdraw the policy,' he said. The Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 7 granted an interim stay on the policy, and gave the State government four weeks time to file a reply addressing the concerns over the policy. The next date for the hearing has been fixed for September 10. The High Court in its order observed that the policy prima facie appears to have been notified 'in haste', and all concerns, including social and environmental impact assessments, timelines, and redressal grievance mechanisms, should have been addressed at the very outset, prior to the policy's notification. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on June 4 notified the Land Pooling Policy 2025. Since then, several farmer bodies and political parties have been staging protests and demonstrations, demanding its withdrawal.
