Pontypool dealer caught after thief stole drugs worth £17k

Daniel Gibbins, 39, was storing 172g of cocaine in the garden of the house he was sharing with his mother in Pontypool.
He was undone when a burglar broke into the shed and took the Primark bag in which he was keeping the class A drugs.
The defendant was using a 'small group of street dealers' to sell the cocaine, Cardiff Crown Court was told.
Hywel Davies, prosecuting, said the police became involved when they investigated the break-in which occurred at around 3am during the early hours of Saturday, May 24.
The bag containing the drugs had been dropped by the burglar and its contents traced back to Gibbins.
He had initially claimed the cocaine was for his own personal use.
Officers found further amounts of the class A drug, cannabis and Pregabalin – used to treat epilepsy and anxiety – and £210 cash in the defendant's bedroom.
Gibbins, of Lasgarn View, Varteg admitted possession with intent to supply cocaine, possession of a class B drug and possession of a class C drug.
The defendant has eight previous convictions for 32 offences and was previously jailed for six months for supplying cannabis, Mr Davies told the court.
Gibbins' barrister Tim Naylor said the best mitigation he could present to the court was his client's early guilty plea to supplying cocaine.
His lawyer added: 'His life has been blighted by the use of drugs for some years and he was dealing to fund his own cocaine habit.
'The defendant was buying nine ounces at a time and using a small group of street dealers.
'This is a 39-year-old man still living at home who was dealing drugs out of his shed.'
Mr Naylor added that Gibbins had previously been treated for obesity.
Judge Shomon Khan told the defendant that he could only 'speculate' that the burglar had known he was storing cocaine in his garden shed.
He said that Gibbins had put his family 'in harm's way'.
The defendant was jailed for three years and four months.
Gibbins was told he would serve half or 40 per cent of that term in custody before being released on licence.
Judge Khan ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.

Moment Primark worker yanks shopper's HAIR out amid screams of ‘I'm going to kill you' in row over return

THIS is the moment a Primark worker brawled with a customer in front of horrified shoppers. Video footage shows the pair screaming as they try to rip each other's hair out. 5 Security guards were forced to step in to drag the two women apart. At one point, the hysterical customer can be heard shouting, 'I'm going to kill her' as she is restrained. The shop assistant then appears to lash out at her own colleagues when they try to intervene. It is understood the row erupted after the worker told the customer she could not return an item. A mum was shopping with her toddler when she witnessed the fight in Newcastle's Metrocentre on Wednesday evening. She told The Sun: 'They were being quite cheeky to each other - just bickering - and then the next minute the Primark worker went right up to the customer's face. 'They were shouting at each other and then the girl's friend kicked the worker in the back of the legs. 'Once that happened, the Primark assistant turned around and just flew for the customer and grabbed her hair. 'The girl grabbed her hair back and they were rolling around on the floor, screaming and shouting for a good couple of minutes. 'People were trying to grab them off each other." Security guards eventually managed to pull the two women apart and the Primark worker was marched off the shop floor by a manager. The customer can be heard saying, 'look what she's done' as she clutched her matted hair. The horrified witness, who filmed the incident, said the floor was 'covered in hair' after the brawl. She described how she tried to shield her two-year-old daughter from the violent outburst but was unable to leave as she was trapped in the queue. The mum-of-one, 26, added: 'I was trying to stand in front of the pram, but I couldn't go anywhere because there was a massive queue of kept bashing into my buggy in the chaos.' Northumbria Police confirmed they were called to reports of a disturbance at the Metrocentre around 5.45pm on August 6. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Officers attended where it was reported that two women - a customer and a staff member - had been involved in a brief verbal altercation. 'For reasons to be established, it is understood the staff member has then proceeded to assault the other woman. 'The victim - aged in her 20s - sustained injuries including bruising and scratches.' Cops said enquiries into the full circumstances are still ongoing. A Primark spokesperson said: 'We are shocked to hear about a serious incident that occurred on August 6th in one of our stores involving a store colleague and a customer. 'The safety and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority, and we do not tolerate any form of violence or aggression towards anyone in our stores at any time. 'We are taking this incident very seriously and are assisting the police with their investigation. 'We are unable to comment further.'

Pontypool driver left boy in hospital with fractured skull

Liam Collins, 36, from Pontypool had been speeding before losing control of his silver Ford Focus on Lasgarn Lane in the Trevethin area of the town. The defendant, who has 37 previous convictions for 111 offences, had given two boys a lift after meeting them outside a shop where he had just bought bottles of beer. Emily Jermyn, prosecuting, told Cardiff Crown Court that Collins had already been drinking. 'The boys were under the impression he was intoxicated and his eyes were red,' she said. 'The boys told him to slow down, but the defendant kept going faster and faster. 'They describe him as flying over speed bumps and when they came to a bend, he told them, 'Watch this!' 'The car then flipped over and landed on its roof.' His victim spent three nights at the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran being treated for a fracture to the back of his skull following the incident on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. When Collins was arrested at home, he tested positive for drink driving with 99 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of blood. The defendant gave a no comment interview at the police station. Two months later on Wednesday, January 29, he was caught driving whilst disqualified in a Fiat 500 car with false plates in Cwmbran. Collins, of no fixed abode, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, drink driving, fraudulently using a registration mark and driving with no insurance. His previous convictions include aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and drink driving. Julia Cox representing him said her client was in danger of becoming 'institutionalised' as a result of spending his life in and out of prison. She told the court the defendant has 'unresolved trauma and grief' after losing his mother while a teenager and, more recently, his sister. Collins' girlfriend is pregnant and he will become a father in October, Miss Cox added. His barrister accepted he has an 'horrific record for driving offences'. 'You ignored pleas to slow down and a crash was inevitable,' Judge Daniel Williams told the defendant. 'You chose to put two children at risk as a result of your outrageously bad driving.' Collins was jailed for three years and four months and banned from driving for five years following his release from prison. He must sit and extended driving test and pay a victim surcharge.
