Hidden from plain sight on the ground floor of Hilton Petaling Jaya in Selangor is Rye Bar.
This stylish hideaway offers an intimate setting for after-work drinks and social gatherings.
Not far from the lobby, the bar is tucked away beside a staircase and is easy to overlook because of its discreet signage.
Step inside, though, and one is greeted by an interior that speaks of sophistication, with subtle retro elements.
Warm lighting sets the tone for a cosy and comfortable evening.
A stage in front of the bar plays host to live bands performing soul, jazz and R&B from midweek through the weekend.
Hilton Petaling Jaya general manager Andre A. Gomez described Rye as a destination to celebrate good music, great food and exceptional drinks.
Blue Hawaii.
'Here at Rye, we want to craft a tasteful experience with our unique selection of single malts, whiskies, bourbons and gins,' he said at the bar's launch.
'While the bar proudly serves classic cocktails, we're excited to introduce new varieties and creative twists in the near future.'
In addition to its collection of whiskies and spirits, Rye also has a curated list of cocktails.
One of the highlights is the Ryegroni cocktail, a refreshing twist on the classic Negroni.
Crafted with bourbon whisky in place of gin, it is paired with Campari and house-made Rosso (red wine) instead of adding in traditional sweet vermouth.
The spirit-forward drink is finished off with a thin orange peel strip for aroma and a pop of colour.
Citrusy aroma from the orange peel and Campari's slight herbaceous, spice notes layer the drink with depth and flavour.

Another standout is the Peachy Blinders cocktail, inspired by British period crime drama Peaky Blinders but reimagined with Malaysian flair.
Using aromatic bunga kantan gin as its base, the cocktail is mixed with peach and almond syrups and lychee fruit puree.
Whipped aquafaba lends it a silky foam crown.
The result is a light, creamy and refreshingly unique drink.
Then there's the Resstini, an after-dinner indulgence with its sweet profile coming in to party.
It features a blend of fat-washed whisky, espresso, stout reduction, and passionfruit, topped with a hint of Emmental.
Its bittersweet profile is a hit with coffee and spirit enthusiasts, making it the perfect nightcap.
At Rye's launch, guests also enjoyed timeless classics such as tropical Blue Hawaii and iconic Jungle Bird, both paying tribute to Hilton's rich cocktail heritage.
The former's distinctive bluish hue comes from a mix of Blue Curaçao, light rum, vodka and a sweet-and-sour blend – a tropical creation by Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort's head bartender Harry Yee in 1957.
Peachy Blinders.
The Jungle Bird, on the other hand, is proudly Malaysian.
Created in 1973 by Hilton Kuala Lumpur's then-beverage manager Ong Swee Teik, it combines dark rum, Campari, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and pineapple juice.
Rye can accommodate up to 50 guests, making it ideal for curated tastings, themed evenings, corporate functions and exclusive celebrations.
The bar also hosts live performances and monthly ticketed live music nights, complete with prizes to be won.

#SHOWBIZ: Time for more Malaysian films to be screened abroad
SYAFIQ Yusof has praised his father, Datuk Yusof Haslam, for his persistent efforts to screen their film, 'Blood Brothers: Bara Naga', in Southeast Asian countries. According to the 33-year-old filmmaker, it is high time for Malaysian films to reach broader regional audiences and move beyond traditional markets like Singapore and Brunei. "If we look at the film market in Malaysia, we operate an open market concept, allowing films from any country to enter, particularly those from Thailand and Indonesia," Syafiq told Harian Metro. "However, gaining entry for our films into other countries' markets can be different. What's important is that our local artistic work has been successful in Malaysia, and I am grateful for that. It is the success of this film that has given us the confidence to take 'Blood Brothers' abroad to several Southeast Asian countries," he added. Syafiq believes there is nothing wrong with attempting to introduce Malaysian films to foreign markets, regardless of the outcome. He said that the decision taken by Skop Productions, his father's company, is the correct one. The film, co-directed by Syafiq and Abhilash Chandra, premiered in Cambodian cinemas on May 27. It will then be released in Thailand in June, followed by Vietnam and Indonesia. "My hope is that this film will continue to be well-received by international audiences," he said. Beyond its Malaysian release, 'Blood Brothers' is also being screened in Singapore and Brunei.

Books galore: People buying books at the Popular Bookfair held at Island 88 in Tanjong Tokong, Penang. — LIM BENG TATT/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Soaking in the smell of new books at amazing prices, visitors to Popular Bookfair happening now are packing the 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m) fair. With rebates of up to 50%, the fair's shelves are filled with books of all genres and languages, including Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia. Writer Andrea Filmer, 40, brought her three children and was pleased with the vast collection. 'My husband and I grew up reading physical books. 'Till now, both of us carry books to read when we are waiting for our kids to finish a class or something,' she said when met at the book fair at Island 88 in Tanjong Tokong. Emphasising the importance of physical books rather than using smartphones or tablets, Filmer said she taught her children to enjoy reading too. She said she and her husband did not enjoy 'doomscrolling' – an informal term referring to the act of excessively scrolling through news or social media content. 'The kids follow by example and it is difficult to tell a kid to read if we are not doing the same. 'My kids read for fun and they love comics. 'I am trying to transition them to other genres,' she said. 'We would even drive down to Kuala Lumpur when there is a book fair there, so it is nice to have Popular Bookfair here,' she said. Since it is now the school holidays, accounts assistant Chan Kok Yen, 46, saw it as a great opportunity to take her twin sons Jasper and Jerome Chan, seven, to Popular Bookfair. 'These days, children are inclined towards surfing the Internet and using electronic gadgets. 'As a parent, I want them to read physical books as I can monitor the content they consume. 'It is better for them to read something rather than watch videos or the television,' she said. Chan said her children loved Chinese comic books and while she was trying to wean them off it, she found that comic books helped with their language comprehension. The book fair features deals and rebates of up to 50% on a myriad of books ranging from bestsellers, fiction, non-fiction, early education, higher education, horror, comics, health and self help books. The large section of Chinese and Bahasa Malaysia books offers options in multiple languages and educational needs. Complementing the book fair is its section of all things stationery, electronics and fun. Pick up your music needs in the form of CDs, DVDs and vinyls or accessorise your computer with speaker, earphones, keyboards, a fancy mouse and other devices at great prices. The book fair even has fun board games and a tidbits corner for when you are feeling peckish while shopping. There are also activities such as a Bingo Parenting Station Game (on June 6 and 7) which will boost cognitive skills and encourage teamwork, a Popular Quiz Show held in both Mandarin and English (June 6 to 8), fun time workshops as well as meet and greet sessions with authors and a well known chef to add to the fun. ‘Flying roti canai' wins over food lovers at Osaka expo
OSAKA: The 'Flying Roti Canai' is not just being flipped into the air; it has soared to stardom at Expo 2025 Osaka, becoming a sensation at the Malaysia Pavilion. With dough spinning through the air like edible art and the buttery aroma drawing crowds from across the globe, this humble flatbread is stealing the spotlight and appetites. Some visitors are willing to queue for up to two hours just to get a taste of the roti canai, expertly hurled by Muhammad Muiz Ruzaini and Mohamad Zul Imran Zulkifle in a dazzling display of culinary acrobatics. 'Many have praised the deliciousness of the roti canai and given very positive feedback, both in terms of taste and our presentation. 'After eating, many would come up and say 'oishi' (delicious). Some even repeat it seven times,' said Muhammad Muiz, adding that most of the visitors were from Japan, South Korea and China. The Kedahan said he did not expect to be selected as part of the Malaysian delegation to Expo 2025 Osaka, where he has been proudly showcasing the rich flavours of Malaysian cuisine on the world stage, Bernama reported. Roti canai is a pan-fried flatbread and a popular breakfast staple in Malaysia, made from a mixture of flour, water, salt, butter and eggs. The dough is skilfully stretched, flipped, and spun in the air to create a layered texture, crispy and flaky on the outside, but soft and fluffy on the inside. In 2023, TasteAtlas, a global food database, ranked roti canai among the 'Top 100 Best Street Foods in the World'. Mohamad Zul Imran, a roti canai maker from Penang, expressed hope that the growing popularity of the dish at the Expo would help elevate it on the global culinary map and inspire more tourists to visit Malaysia. 'I hope the Malaysia Pavilion roti canai becomes the number one dish at Expo 2025,' he said. Japanese visitor Yoko Yoshinaga described the dish as 'sweet, with a unique texture and addictive qualities'. 'This is my second time having roti canai. I first saw it on X, and the unforgettable taste brought me back. I lined up again just to relive the experience,' she said. Yoshinaga, who visited Malaysia 30 years ago, praised the nation's development, calling it a peaceful and modern country. Another visitor, Hanako Sekimukai, who tried roti canai for the first time, said she was pleasantly surprised by its flavour. 'I've been to Malaysia before, but I never had the chance to try roti canai. The chicken curry served with it wasn't too spicy, which made it even more enjoyable,' she said, adding that the cultural performances at the pavilion brought back fond memories of her time in Malaysia. Spanning 2,654.52sq m across three floors, the Malaysia Pavilion reflects the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. Under the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future.
