Writer Andrea Filmer, 40, brought her three children and was pleased with the vast collection.
'My husband and I grew up reading physical books.
'Till now, both of us carry books to read when we are waiting for our kids to finish a class or something,' she said when met at the book fair at Island 88 in Tanjong Tokong.
Emphasising the importance of physical books rather than using smartphones or tablets, Filmer said she taught her children to enjoy reading too.
She said she and her husband did not enjoy 'doomscrolling' – an informal term referring to the act of excessively scrolling through news or social media content.
'The kids follow by example and it is difficult to tell a kid to read if we are not doing the same.
'My kids read for fun and they love comics.
'I am trying to transition them to other genres,' she said.
'We would even drive down to Kuala Lumpur when there is a book fair there, so it is nice to have Popular Bookfair here,' she said.
Since it is now the school holidays, accounts assistant Chan Kok Yen, 46, saw it as a great opportunity to take her twin sons Jasper and Jerome Chan, seven, to Popular Bookfair.
'These days, children are inclined towards surfing the Internet and using electronic gadgets.
'As a parent, I want them to read physical books as I can monitor the content they consume.
'It is better for them to read something rather than watch videos or the television,' she said.
Chan said her children loved Chinese comic books and while she was trying to wean them off it, she found that comic books helped with their language comprehension.

#SHOWBIZ: 24-year-old Taiwanese influencer known for eating cosmetics dies
TAIPEI: In a tragic turn of events, Guava Beauty, a 24-year-old Taiwanese influencer known for eating beauty products or "make-up mukbang" videos, has died suddenly. Her death on May 24 has sparked widespread speculation on mainland Chinese social media, with many suggesting poisoning as a possible cause, the South China Morning Post reported. Her family announced the news of her passing in a statement posted on her social media account. It read: "It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that our treasured girl of beauty-product mukbangs, Guava Beauty, put down her brushes and flew off to start a new channel in heaven on May 24, 2025." "Thank you to everyone who ever liked, commented, and laughed with her. She truly cherished it all." The statement ended with, "Maybe when we meet again, she will be unboxing angel-exclusive make-up for her celestial mukbang." Guava Beauty, who had amassed over 12,000 followers on one social media platform, captivated her audience with a sweet, youthful image and creative content. Her signature videos featured her attempting to consume various beauty products, including lipstick, blush, face masks, and cotton pads. In a recent promotional clip for a jelly-like blush, she famously declared, "If you dare recommend it, I dare to eat it." The video showed her applying the blush before using a fork to eat it, describing it as "crispy, kind of like agar jelly," but ultimately, "terrible." While many fans were shocked by her content, others expressed concern that her videos might mislead viewers, particularly younger audiences, into believing that cosmetics were safe for consumption. The news of her death sent shockwaves across both mainland China and Taiwan, as evidenced by one user who commented, "I cannot believe it, but I know Guava Beauty will be the most beautiful beauty-mukbang angel in heaven." Mukbang (meaning eating broadcast) content is hugely popular in China and many other Asian countries.
