‘The Kerala Story' National Award row: Adah Sharma hits back at criticism, says, 'We can't snatch away...'

The storm around The Kerala Story refuses to settle. Despite facing heavy backlash since its release, the film recently picked up two National Awards—Best Director for Sudipto Sen and Best Cinematography. But along with recognition came a fresh wave of criticism, with many questioning whether the honours were deserved. The controversy dates back to 2023 when the film first hit theatres. Accusations flew that it painted Muslims in a negative light, spreading a propaganda-driven narrative. For some, it was an untold truth; for others, a dangerous distortion. Ada Sharma's Stand on Negativity Speaking exclusively to News18, lead actress Ada Sharma shared how she views the debate. 'Kahaniyon mein villain kabhi nahi sochte ki hero jeetne ke yogya hai. I'm not calling everyone a villain. Everyone has the right to their opinion. But if you spread negativity without reason, then yes, you are the villain,' she said. Her words hinted at a clear divide—those who simply disagreed and those who, in her view, aimed to pull the film down for no reason. 'Just like we don't question those who like the film, we can't snatch away opinions of those who don't. But pointless negativity is a different matter,' she added. Propaganda or Reality? On being asked about the 'propaganda' tag, Sharma was blunt. 'Until it happens to you or someone in your family, you don't want to believe it's true,' she said. The actress also revealed that industry applause wasn't exactly overwhelming. 'From the industry's side, I don't think that appreciation came. My parents are not from films, so for me, appreciation depends on how we take it. I did receive personal messages from colleagues, but I can't force them to put it out in public,' she confessed. Political Firestorm in Kerala The backlash reached political circles too. Kerala Chief Minister slammed the National Award jury, saying that honouring The Kerala Story was an 'insult' to Indian cinema's legacy of unity and secular values. He accused the film of defaming the state and spreading communal poison. Director Sudipto Sen, however, insists the story is rooted in fact. The film revolves around three women allegedly forced into conversion and radicalisation by ISIS—a plotline that sparked both sympathy and outrage. As the debate deepens, one thing is clear: the film has divided opinions sharply. To some, it is truth-telling. To others, it's dangerous propaganda. But for Ada Sharma, the focus remains simple—filter the noise, face the villains, and keep moving forward.

Adah Sharma On Negativity Around The Kerala Story National Award Win: 'Villains Never Think...'

Last Updated: Adah Sharma opens up on Kerala Story's National Award win, hitting back at trolls calling it undeserving and addressing industry silence, saying she 'can't ask people to tweet.' Adah Sharma's The Kerala Story won a National Award in Best Director and Best Cinematography categories, but even after receiving one of the highest honours, the journey didn't get any easier, as many called the win undeserving. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Adah Sharma opened up about how she dealt with the negativity that came her way. 'Villains in stories never think the hero deserves to win," Adah shared, adding, 'It's not like I'm calling everyone a villain — everyone is entitled to their opinions. The people I call villains are those who spread negativity unnecessarily. Just like how we never question people who like the film, we also can't take away the opinion of those who don't. But if you spread negativity without reason, then yes, I will stick to calling you a villain." Addressing the criticism of the film being labelled propaganda, the actress said, 'Till the time it doesn't happen with you or your family member, you just don't want to believe that it's true." Adah Sharma On Not Getting Appreciation From The Industry When asked if she feels she has received enough appreciation from her colleagues in the industry, Adah admitted, 'Industry-wise, I don't think that appreciation came. But my mom and dad are not from the industry, and appreciation also depends on how we define it. I can't go around asking people to tweet for me. If someone genuinely wants to do it, they will; if not, I can't force it. I personally got messages from people in the industry, but I can't ask them to put it out publicly." Backlash On National Award Win Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has slammed the 71st National Film Awards for The Kerala Story's wins. In a statement, Chief Minister Vijayan said the film was 'made with lies to defame Kerala and spread communalism." He added that by honouring such a film, the awards jury had 'insulted the noble tradition of Indian cinema that stood for religious brotherhood and national integration." The Chief Minister further alleged that the move reflected the ideological agenda of the Sangh Parivar. 'They are implementing the Sangh Parivar agenda of turning cinema into a weapon to implement the communal agenda," he said. Vijayan urged all democratic-minded citizens and Malayalis to speak out against what he described as a grave injustice. About The Kerala Story Directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Shah, The Kerala Story created a major stir upon its release in 2023. The film follows the story of three women from Kerala who were allegedly forced into religious conversion and radicalised by ISIS. Its claim that 32,000 women were affected had faced intense scrutiny during the time of its release. The cast features Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani. Karan Johar Says Bollywood Is Facing 'Director Crisis' For Action Films: 'There Isn't Anyone'

Karan Johar further argued that the Bollywood filmmakers need to go back and make films they are best at - romantic dramas. Over the last few years, we have seen several Bollywood filmmakers trying their luck with the mass action genre movies. However, unfortunately, not all these action films have worked well at the box office. Recently, Karan Johar explained that it is primarily because Bollywood is facing a 'director crisis" when it comes to action movies. The filmmaker was talking to Suchin Mehrotra on The Streaming Show podcast when he was asked if Bollywood has a director crisis when it comes to big-scale event films, as most such films are made by directors from the south. To this, KJo responded by saying, 'It is a director crisis. You can't think of more than a name or two. There isn't anyone, because that entire generation spent their time watching a different kind of Hindi cinema, nurtured on a different kind of cinema. Globalisation, the Shah Rukh Khan phenomenon, stories shot outside the country, they love all that, but haven't been able to do that front-footed testosterone cinema. They have never known it. Now, they can't learn it. So, they emulate it and fall flat on their face." Karan Johar further argued that the Bollywood filmmakers need to go back and make films they are best at – romantic dramas. 'We don't have the directors to mount those kinds of films. So, if we can't, then thank God for Saiyaara. This, we can do. When I met Mohit Suri, he told me that all the filmmakers from the south called him, and it was so gratifying to know, because we are the ones calling them. We are always picking up the phone, telling them how incredible their films are. We do one thing well, so let's do that. Let's go back to our storytelling," he added. Interestingly, Karan Johar's last directorial was also a romantic drama – Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Released in 2023, the film starred Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in the lead and was widely loved by all. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
