Into Africa: meet the cooks and restaurants flying the flags for African cuisine in Perth
While the head chef of Hearth at the Ritz-Carlton Perth spends his working hours exploring the possibilities of native ingredients and open fires, his days off are spent showcasing African food culture.
First, it was tacos with jerk sauce at a major food show last year, then a trip to Sydney to join forces with fellow grillers Anason and Firepop for a Good Food event at The Streets of Barangaroo. Cole's contribution to this year's Taste Great Southern party, meanwhile, included grilled lamb skewers hit with suya, a punchy Nigerian spice mix that's been embraced throughout West Africa.
March, however, allowed Cole to really express himself. As part of the Kita Food Festival in Singapore, he took over modern African restaurant Tamba and served a thrilling seven-course meal inspired by traditional Sierra Leonese flavours and his mother Elsie's home cooking. (The dinner will go down, no question, as one of my favourite meals of 2025.)

Calvin Harris and Vick Hope welcome son into the world
Calvin Harris has become a father for the first time. The Feel So Close hitmaker and his wife Vick Hope welcomed their son Micah into the world two weeks ago and the DJ has praised his spouse as a "superhero" after being by her side throughout the water birth. Sharing a selection of photos from Micah's birth, including a graphic shot of the placenta and it subsequently being turned into capsules of powder, Calvin wrote on Instagram: "20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah." Vick reshared Calvin's photo of himself and Micah on her own Instagram Story and wrote: "My boys." The BBC Radio 1 presenter confirmed her pregnancy on her radio show in May. She said: "I should probably also say this is my final week before I go on maternity leave." Co-host Jamie Laing replied: "You're an amazing friend, an amazing person, and you're just going to be an amazing mum." Calvin, 41, and Vick, 35, got married in an outdoor ceremony at Hulne Priory in Alnwick, Northumberland, in September 2023. After their vows, guests including 'Big Brother's AJ Odudu and DJs Vernon Kay, Scott Mills and Jordan North were treated to a Glastonbury-style reception that included a live performance from Nile Rodgers and Chic, who flew in from the US especially for the celebrations. According to The Sun newspaper, Calvin told Vick during their vows: 'I promise to be your teammate, best friend and companion for life'. In return, his bride said: 'The pure, unadulterated euphoria I was seeking when we met? I found it instantly in you. 'I promise to keep us laughing together and to keep us meditating on and glowing in it every day for the rest of our lives'. During the reception, teepees were set up for guests to relax, and a variety of food trucks offered burgers, pizzas, and Nigerian dishes. Nile kicked off his set with Luther Vandross' 'Never Too Much' before playing hits by Madonna, David Bowie, Beyonce and Pharrell Williams and ending on his own song, 'Good Times'. Revellers then enjoyed a 10-minute firework display and there were 80 tents set up for them to camp on site overnight. A source said: 'Calvin and Vick's wedding was a day none of their guests will ever forget.'

Beyond tours, Intrepid Travel is now opening its own hotels and resorts
It used to be one of those unwritten laws in travel – accommodation companies did accommodation, tour companies did tours. That was before tour operators broke the mould with expansion into river and small ship cruising, a common synergy these days. One shining exception is Abercrombie & Kent, with its A&K Sanctuary division, comprising 15 African safari camps, lodges and five Nile riverboats with plans for further expansion internationally. Australia's famous tour company Intrepid Travel has also made a splash into the accommodation market, recently buying a resort in Tasmania and a riad in Morocco. This follows its 2023 acquisition of the Daintree Ecolodge in Queensland, and lease of a property in Hoi An, Vietnam. It basically means cutting out the middle man – the company plans to own 20 such sites within the next three years. Intrepid's Australian purchase is of The Edge of the Bay, a previously family-run property on Tasmania's Freycinet Peninsula that will now see Intrepid Foundation partner Greening Australia at the property, introducing new nature-based guest experiences, as well as fundraising for the NGO. In Marrakesh, Morocco, its guesthouse was also acquired from a private owner. Guests will be able to enjoy culinary experiences in the medina and onsite, with chefs recruited via another foundation partner, the Amal Association, which provides culinary training to women in Morocco.
