First Indian, Hungarian and Polish astronauts arrive at the ISS
A Crew Dragon capsule carrying the three astronauts and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson docked at the ISS on Thursday at 1031 GMT, according to the US space agency NASA. The capsule had been launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by Elon Musk's space company SpaceX just under 30 hours earlier.
The Ax-4 mission had been postponed several times due to technical problems with the rocket and the ISS. This is the fourth commercial space mission for Houston-based Axiom Space, in collaboration with the US space agency NASA and SpaceX.
While Whitson has been in space several times, this is the first space flight for the three amateur astronauts. (DPA)

DPA Washington A private astronaut crew returned to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday. The Axiom Mission 4 landed in the sea near the Californian coast and was picked up by a recovery ship. The four travellers on board the Dragon capsule from Elon Musk's company SpaceX had spent two weeks in space. An astronaut from India's ISRO space agency was on board for the first time. The flight was made possible by co-operation between NASA and ISRO, after an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In addition to the Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, the crew also included the Pole Sławosz Uznaski-Winiewski, the Hungarian Tibor Kapu and the former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson. The mission brought astronauts from Poland and Hungary to the space station for an extended stay for the first time. A video on X showed Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk watching the landing on television. 'Welcome back,' he said. 'Thank God, everything went well.' On its return, the Dragon capsule brought around 260 kilograms of cargo to Earth, including NASA equipment and scientific data from over 60 experiments. The mission is part of NASA's long-term strategy to open up low-Earth orbit more to commercial space travel. In future, private providers are to increasingly take over transport and research services, while the US space agency concentrates on missions to the moon and later to Mars. According to media reports, a flight with Axiom costs around €70 million ($81.4 million) per passenger. In 2022, the company organized the first private mission to the ISS, followed by others in 2023 and 2024.

Astronauts from US, India, Poland, Hungary return from space station
A SpaceX capsule carrying astronauts from India, Poland, Hungary and the United States has landed in California, completing the 20-day Axiom Mission 4. The crew undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) on Monday and landed on earth on Tuesday after a 22-hour journey. The return flight concluded the fourth ISS mission organised by US startup Axiom Space in collaboration with SpaceX, the private rocket venture of billionaire Elon Musk. For the non-American trio, the mission marked a return to crewed spaceflight for their respective nations after decades. The crew launched from the Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida on June 25 for a mission where they conducted about 60 scientific experiments. 'Thanks for the great ride … Happy to be back,' Commander Peggy Whitson, an Axiom employee and former NASA astronaut, said after the splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego. Whitson, 65, retired from NASA in 2018 after a pioneering career that included becoming the US space agency's first female chief astronaut and the first woman ever to command an ISS expedition. Also on board were pilot Shubhanshu Shukla of India and mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary. For rising space power India, the participation of Shukla, an Indian air force pilot, is seen by India's space program as a precursor, of sorts, to the debut crewed mission of its Gaganyaan orbital spacecraft, planned for 2027. Billionaire Charles Simonyi, a Hungarian-born software designer who became a US citizen in 1982, has twice visited the ISS as a space tourist, in 2007 and 2009, hitching rides on board Russian Soyuz capsules. Axiom-4 also marks the 18th crewed spaceflight logged by SpaceX since 2020, when Musk's rocket company ushered in a new NASA era by providing American astronauts their first rides to space from US soil since the end of the space shuttle program nine years earlier. Axiom is one of a handful of companies developing a commercial space station of its own, intended to eventually replace the ISS, which NASA expects to retire in about 2030.
