Bangladesh to cooperate fully with Malaysia in GMRB militant group investigation
The Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur promptly engaged with the relevant Malaysian authorities and formally requested the identities of the individuals as well as information regarding the allegations brought against them.
Five of the individuals have been formally charged in Malaysian courts, while the rest are undergoing further investigation or deportation processes, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.
"The Bangladesh government is closely monitoring the developments, and the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in close communication with the relevant Malaysian authorities and will extend necessary support to the expatriate Bangladeshis wherever needed,' it said.
The ministry also reiterated Bangladesh's firm stance against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism, and militancy, reaffirming its commitment to cooperate fully with Malaysian authorities in this regard.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail reportedly said that police initially detected the group's activities through social media accounts operated by Bangladeshi nationals using Malaysian IP addresses to spread IS ideology.
He said a three-phase operation between April and June led to the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB) members, including their leader, dismantling the group's Johor-based network. — Bernama

(MCMC pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia will be taking part in the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), as part of the government's ongoing effort to boost the country's communications technology ecosystem, the communications ministry said today. WSIS+20 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from July 7 to July 11. The ministry said Malaysia's participation in the event would bring about numerous strategic benefits, including global recognition of Malaysia's push for wider internet access in rural areas as well as efforts to boost information and communication technology literacy among the public. 'Malaysia will use WSIS to introduce government initiatives like the National Digital Network (Jendela) and the national information dissemination centre (Nadi),' a ministry statement said. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil will be leading the Malaysian delegation to WSIS+20, and will attend more than 10 meetings with his counterparts from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Somalia, Greece, Russia and Algeria. Fahmi will also be meeting Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union.

(Bernama pic) GENEVA : Clear and consistent government policies, backed by political stability, are key factors in attracting foreign investors to Malaysia, said communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. Speaking at a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora here yesterday, Fahmi cited the Madani Economy framework, the 12th Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap as examples of coherent and investor-friendly policies. 'These policies provide clarity and assurance to investors. They trust that such policies won't be changed arbitrarily,' he said. Fahmi also pointed to recent data from the statistics department and the investment, trade and industry ministry as evidence that Malaysia remains a top destination for foreign direct investment. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, approved investments for the first quarter of the year totalled RM89.8 billion — a 3.7% year-on-year increase — despite ongoing global economic challenges. The gathering, held at Rumah Malaysia in Geneva, was attended by around 50 Malaysians, including students, professionals, and staff from the permanent mission of Malaysia to the United Nations. Also present was Malaysia's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Nadzirah Osman. During the event, Fahmi also highlighted Malaysia's achievements in the communications sector. 'Malaysia ranks among the top 10 countries globally for the most affordable internet, and we have the second fastest internet speed in the Asia-Pacific region after South Korea,' he said. Nadzirah welcomed the session, saying it allowed Malaysians in Geneva to share their views with Fahmi and gain first-hand insights on current developments in Malaysia. Fahmi is currently leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event, which runs from July 7 to July 11.
