Marnus van der Merwe makes Lowveld history with Springbok call-up
Van der Merwe (28) will be on the bench for the Springboks in jersey number 16 during the match against the Barbarians at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. In receiving what is believed by many to believe a long-overdue Bok call-up, Van der Merwe will become the first former Laerskool Laeveld learner to don the green and gold come Saturday. He will also be the sixth (if one includes sevens rugby) Nellies alumnus to achieve the feat.
He finished Grade Seven at Laeveld in 2010, going on to attend Hoërskool Nelspruit from which he matriculated in 2015. After matriculating he made the move to Bloemfontein where he joined the Toyota Cheetahs Academy, earning his way up the ranks and appearing for the Cheetahs at U19 and U21 levels.
After breaking into the senior set-up he played more than 70 games for the Free Staters before he departed in July 2024, having made his debut in the defunct Pro14 Championship in 2018. He was also part of the victorious 2023 Currie Cup winning team.
Van der Merwe, a hooker by trade now after playing as a loose forward in high school, traded the plains of the Free State for the cold and wet countryside in Wales by joining the Scarlets in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

Since making his move to west Wales, Van der Merwe has been in the form of his life, playing outstanding rugby that has seen him voted the Scarlets' Supporters' Player of the Season and named in the BKT URC Elite XV for 2024/25. Only JC Pretorius and Sam Lousi won more turnovers than Van der Merwe over the course of the URC.
While 2024/25 has undoubtedly been his breakout season, Van der Merwe first attracted the attention of those in the Springbok coaching room last year when he was included in a 43-player squad for a Springbok alignment camp in early 2024. He didn't make the cut then, but that didn't stop his momentum and he has been unstoppable on his mission to earning a Bok call-up.
This hard work paid off when he was included in Rassie Erasmus' squad for the upcoming 2025 tests last month. He has stiff competition in the hooker position, but his work ethic has helped him stand out in Erasmus' eyes.
He is one of four uncapped players in the side that will take on the Baa-Baas – along with Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Vincent Tshituka and Neethling Fouché.
Commenting on the four uncapped players in the 23-man match day squad, Erasmus said: 'They have all slotted into our systems really well and have a good understanding of what we want to do in this match … Asenathi, Vincent, Neethling, and Marnus have all been impressive at training and for their respective franchises this season, and we hope to see them replicate those quality performances in this match.'
Van der Merwe won't be the only former Lowvelder in action on Saturday though, as old Lydenburger Kwagga Smith was also named on the bench for the encounter. While not included in the side for this Saturday, former Laerskool Bergland and NHS learner Faf de Klerk is in the larger squad for the series, along with former Airlink Pumas player Vincent Koch.
Rugby fans in the Lowveld will be itching to see their boys in action, especially when the Springboks return to Mbombela Stadium to take on Georgia on July 19. Tickets are available for the clash and you best make sure you get yours at Ticketmaster.co.za.

Former Grey boy and NFL hopeful Ekeji to make Sharks debut
There will also be plenty of interest in how powerful flanker Bathobele Hlekani goes in Kimberley. Former Grey College star and National Football League (NFL) hopeful Paschal Ekeji will make his Sharks debut in their round four Currie Cup match against Griquas in Kimberley on Friday afternoon (3pm). Another player who'll be in action for the team from Durban and who'll have many watching him is Junior Springboks U20 flank star Bathobele Hlekani. The Sharks are hunting a first win in this year's competition after so far going down to the Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs. Hlekani, who will join the Lions at the end of the season, was one of the big stars of the Junior Boks team that won the recent World Championship in Italy. He will run out at flank after featuring for the same Sharks XV last year, but at lock. Bathobele Hlekani will turn out for the Sharks this weekend. Picture: Steve Haag Sports/Gallo Images Winger Ekeji (1.93m and 94kg) was set to be a big star for the Grey College team in 2020 but Covid ended those dreams before he opted to study agriculture at Stellenbosch University. He played Varsity Cup rugby and also ran out for Western Province. In June 2022 the Lesotho-born Ekeji, of Nigerian descent, attended an NFL Africa camp in Ghana with the hope of playing American gridiron, having been selected to be a part of the International Player Pathways scheme. He however failed to secure a contract and is now back in South Africa and set to turn out for the Sharks. Picture:Another recent Junior Boks star, scrumhalf Ceano Everson has also been picked by coach JP Pietersen to start against Griquas. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo and fullback Jaco Williams, also members of the Junior Boks team, have retained their places in the Sharks team for the trip to the Northern Cape. In other Currie Cup matches this weekend, on Saturday the Pumas host the Lions (2pm) and the Cheetahs welcome Western Province (2pm) and on Sunday, Boland entertain the Bulls (3pm).

Three Springboks with everything to gain against Wallabies
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus selected a star-studded matchday 23 for this weekend's Test against the Wallabies, and there aren't all that many 'newcomers' who have cracked the nod for this tournament opener. However, there are still some big opportunities for a few 'fringe' players, and here we look at three who can truly shake things up with a big performance. Edwill van der Merwe The talented wing has made a flying start to his Test career, but there is no doubt that this Saturday's Test against the Wallabies will present his biggest challenge to date. With Cheslin Kolbe rested as a precaution due to an injury niggle, Van der Merwe must make the most of this rare opportunity to don the No 14 in such a high-profile fixture, and to prove that there is not all that much that separates him from his first-choice counterparts. Andre Esterhuizen In rapid fashion, Esterhuizen has become an integral member of the current Springbok group, particularly due to the fact he is viewed as a unique hybrid player who can cover centre and flank. Damian de Allende is virtually irreplaceable at inside centre, but this is another game where Esterhuizen can demonstrate just how much he has progressed as a player over the last 24 months, while ramping up the competition for that No 12 jersey. Marco van Staden With Siya Kolisi owning the No 6 jersey, the opportunity for Van Staden to earn a start in a 'big' game like this came as quite a surprise as the Springbok captain was instead shifted to eighthman. Van Staden has clearly been chosen for his impact at the breakdown, and to negate some of the Wallabies' threats in this area, and so it will be fascinating to see how he grabs this opportunity especially considering it surely won't be all that long before Kolisi returns to his more regular position at openside flank. Lions must wait for Junior Springbok star Batho Hlekani after Sharks dig in their heels
Bathobele Hlekani is staying with the Sharks ... for now. Image: BackpagePix The tug-of-war between the Sharks and the Lions over Junior Springbok heavyweight Batho Hlekani has swung in favour of the Durbanites — for the time being. A press conference with JP Pietersen revealed that Hlekani will be with the Sharks until 31 December, when the burly flanker's contract with the KwaZulu-Natal union ends. The Lions have apparently signed Hlekani and had hoped to have him on board for the Currie Cup, but the Sharks have dug in their heels. Hlekani, fresh from training with the Springboks, plays his first game of the year for the Sharks, taking over from the injured Tino Mavesere — one of three senior players to suffer injuries last week. The others are lock Corne Rahl and wing Yaw Penxe. The Sharks have had a difficult start to the year. They began from scratch with a young squad, and after two heavy defeats on the Highveld — against the Lions and the Bulls — they fought hard to narrowly lose 7-5 to the Cheetahs in Durban last week. 'We had a huge improvement from the Bulls game to the Cheetahs game, so we have something positive we can build on going to Griquas on Friday.' Joining Pietersen was captain Nick Hatton, who added: 'Although we didn't beat the Cheetahs, the game was a step in the right direction. We did a lot of things right. We've been put under pressure in training this week and we want to build on that performance in Kimberley. 'We all play to win,' Hatton continued, as the Sharks look to end their losing start to the Currie Cup. 'We are doing everything we can, giving 100 per cent every day. Winning is the end goal, but we are focusing on our process and our performance come 3pm on Friday.' Pietersen said that an obvious area where the Sharks need to improve is their ability to score tries. 'If you look at the Cheetahs game, the score was 7-5, so when both sides had the ball, the defences held firm. We would love to get better on attack, but attack requires cohesion and that takes time. 'Are we getting better in training? Yes, we are. Our attack is a big focus for us, but it takes time. Going to Kimberley, you need to score points to win games.'
