Weather: Cut-off low system hit SA, bringing lots of rain and snow in some regions
A cut-off low system made landfall over the western interior of the country on Wednesday and it is expected to move slowly eastwards.
SA Weather Service forecaster Tokelo Chiloane snow was likely over the Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape this week.
'Daytime temperatures are also expected to drop significantly from Wednesday onwards, across most parts of the country, with a gradual recovery from Friday onwards. The South African Weather Service will continue to monitor any further developments relating to the weather systems and will issue subsequent updates as required,' she said.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected on from Wednesday and South Africans should expect more rainy weather when a cut-off low pressure system hits in the eastern parts of the country, says the SA weather service.
'Severe thunderstorms associated with flooding of roads and settlements, as well as damage or loss ofinfrastructure, property, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock, especially over the Free State andNorth West. There is also a distinct possibility of damaging hail occurring in association with the
thunderstorms.'

What unexpected weather changes should South Africans brace for this week?
South Africans can expect a week of shifting skies and icy breezes as a series of cold fronts sweep across the country. Monday starts with a chill, especially over the central and eastern parts, where cold to cool conditions will dominate. Coastal KwaZulu-Natal may see up to 30% chance of rain, with cloudy skies and brisk winds pushing inland. The Northern Cape and Free State enjoy more sunshine, but the clear skies do little to ease the morning bite. The Western Cape will be cool and mostly dry, with some cloud cover creeping in from the west and winds freshening along the coast.

'We expect rain and strong winds in coastal regions starting Saturday afternoon,' forecaster Phemelo Zonke confirmed. The South African Weather Service has warned of damaging winds along the southwestern and southern coastal areas and rough seas that could make navigation difficult. Zonke added, 'Winds may reach levels that make sea travel hazardous, so caution is advised.' Rain will extend into southern coastal regions by Sunday, with cold conditions across much of the province. Cape Town will see highs of 15°C, while Sutherland remains particularly cold at around 12°C. 'The cold front's effects will persist into Sunday before easing into the new week,' Zonke said.
