COLUMBIA – KJ Scobey's ground-rule double in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Jordan Carrion and gave the University of South Carolina baseball team a 3-2, 10-inning walk-off win over North Florida Tuesday night (April 22) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
Carrion opened the 10th with a double to right. After UNF intentionally walked Beau Hollins, Scobey took the 3-2 pitch from Brandon Adams and deposited it over the centerfielder's head for a ground-rule double and Carolina's first extra-inning walk-off of the year.
The Gamecocks scored in the bottom of the fifth on Nathan Hall's two-run home run to the visitor's bullpen. UNF scored an unearned run in the sixth and a run in the eighth to send it to extra innings.
Carolina's pitching allowed just six hits and had only one walk on the day. Brendan Sweeney earned the win, striking out a pair in the top of the 10th. Jackson Soucie pitched the first five frames, allowing three hits and no runs with three strikeouts.
Scobey had two hits to lead Carolina's offense while Hall drove in a pair.

Hurricanes Rookies' Strong Seasons Validated In Calder Trophy Voting

The results from the 2025 Calder Trophy voting for the NHL's Rookie of the Year were announced on Tuesday with Montreal's Lane Hutson taking home top honors. While neither were finalists, both of Carolina's Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake appeared on a few ballots from the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. 2024-25 Calder Trophy voting. Stankoven, 22, technically still qualified as a rookie this season after playing one game short of the cutoff in the 2023-24 season. Advertisement In 78 games this year (59 with Dallas and 19 with Carolina), Stankoven had 14 goals and 38 points. Although voting takes place before the playoffs, Stankoven had yet another good showing there, with five goals and eight points in 15 games. His relentless and aggressive forecheck were perfect complements to Carolina's game and he looked like their best player in the Eastern Conference Final. The Hurricanes acquired Stankoven from the Stars along with two first-round and two third-round picks in exchange for winger Mikko Rantanen. Stankoven finished seventh in voting. Blake, who finished ninth in voting, had a strong first season in the NHL, registering 17 goals and 34 points in 80 games. The 21-year-old rookie had outstanding underlying numbers for the Hurricanes this season and found his way from playing sheltered, fourth-line minutes all the way to the top line and top power play unit. He's a premier stickhandler with the puck and his ability to force turnovers and win back pucks is among the very best on the team. The future certainly looks bright for those two. Everything to Know Inside the Panthers' NFL Draft Dilemma

Everything to Know Inside the Panthers' NFL Draft Dilemma originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The clock was ticking. Phones were buzzing. And in a quiet room inside Bank of America Stadium, Carolina Panthers GM Dan Morgan had a choice that could reshape the franchise. Advertisement The latest episode of the Panthers' Blueprint series offered fans a rare glimpse behind the curtain and revealed a near blockbuster draft-day trade that didn't quite happen. As the Panthers sat at No. 8 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams were working the phones, pushing hard for a deal to move up and grab wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Morgan and VP of Football Operations Brandt Tilis knew LA wanted 'their guy.' And Carolina wanted him too. The Rams' final offer? A haul that included the No. 26 overall pick, a 2026 second-rounder, and two mid-round picks, totaling 414 points on the NFL's trade value chart. That's just two points shy of the 416-point value of Carolina's No. 8 and No. 163 picks combined. Close, but not enough. 'They needed to blow us away,' Morgan said during the episode, as he calmly submitted a counter offer that reportedly included a future first-round pick. The Rams declined. With less than two minutes left on the clock, Carolina locked in McMillan. The Panthers had already committed to going wide receiver early, confident they could find defensive help later in the draft. Passing on McMillan, even for solid value, would have risked losing their top offensive target in a make-or-break season for head coach Dave Canales. Advertisement And here's the kicker: Los Angeles pivoted and traded their pick to Atlanta for a 2026 first-rounder, proving there's more than one way to win on draft night. Still, Blueprint peeled back the layers of what fans rarely see: how razor-thin the margin is between sticking to your board and reshaping your future. Panthers Sending Strong Message to NFL in 2025

Panthers Sending Strong Message to NFL in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Carolina Panthers were written off early in 2024. Now, just months later, one NFL analyst believes they're quietly building a team no one wants to play. Advertisement In a league where narratives can shift overnight, Aaron Leming of Windy City Gridironlisted Carolina as one of the NFL's most improved teams heading into the 2025 season, joining a group of rebuilding squads that all lost 12 or more games last year. But Leming didn't include the Panthers out of sympathy. He pointed to concrete roster upgrades and a rejuvenated quarterback as reasons for real optimism in Charlotte. 'They went from an easy win to a team nobody wanted to face down the stretch,' Leming noted, referencing Carolina's improved play late last season. Indeed, after a disastrous 1-7 start in 2024, the Panthers finished the year by winning four of their final nine, including a dramatic overtime victory over Atlanta in Week 18. That turnaround was sparked by the resurgence of quarterback Bryce Young, who showed flashes of his Heisman-caliber talent after early-season struggles and a temporary benching. Under new head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan, the Panthers attacked the offseason with urgency. They added high-upside youth through the draft, highlighted by No. 8 overall pick Tetairoa McMillan, an explosive wide receiver with WR1 potential, and edge rushers Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. On the back end, safety Tre'Von Moehrig and rookie Lathan Ransom will help anchor what was a porous secondary. Advertisement 'The Jones, Wharton, and Brown additions will complement the high-round selections of Scourton and Umanmielen,' Leming explained. 'Add in Moehrig and Ransom… that should be enough to help get the Panthers' defense closer to league average.' That might not sound glamorous, but for a team that ranked bottom-five in nearly every defensive metric last year, average could be transformational. On the offensive side, retaining Adam Thielen's veteran presence and drafting McMillan give Young a stronger supporting cast. With running backs Chuba Hubbard and new addition Rico Dowdle forming a thunder-and-lightning backfield, Carolina may finally be able to control the tempo. Health will be crucial. The offensive line's ability to keep Young upright is perhaps the biggest variable standing between another lost season and a potential playoff push. Advertisement Leming put it plainly: 'Assuming the Panthers' offensive line can stay healthy, the offense has a quality ceiling.' It's still early. The Panthers are months away from taking a snap that counts. But with roster upgrades on both sides of the ball, a quarterback with something to prove, and a coach known for QB development, Carolina may not just be improved, they may be dangerous. Panthers fans, it's time to watch closely. The rebuild may finally be taking root.
