CCI seeks financial records of Ultratech, others following probe into ONGC complaint over cartelisation of tenders

New Delhi [India], July 4 (ANI): With its probe into a complaint by ONGC alleging cartelisation, finding evidence of Ultratech's subsidiary India Cements engaged in collusion with two other cement manufacturers in violation of the norms, the Competition Commission of India has given directions for submitting detailed financial and income tax records.
The competition watchdog probed a complaint by ONGC alleging cartelisation in its tenders. Its probe found evidence of Ultratech and its subsidiary engaging in anti-competitive collusion with two other cement manufacturers - Shree Digvijay Cement and Dalmia Cements, with a middleman allegedly facilitating coordination among the parties.
Senior executives of the company have been held accountable under the relevant sections of the Competition Act.
The Commission has directed Ultratech and its executives to submit detailed financial and income tax records for five years. A formal response has also been sought to the investigation report.
CCI works to protect consumer interests and spur innovation and efficiency among businesses.The objectives of the Competition Act are sought to be achieved through the Competition Commission of India, which was established by the Central Government in 2003. The Commission consists of a Chairperson and not less than two and not more than six other Members to be appointed by the Central Government.
It is the duty of the Commission to eliminate practices having an adverse effect on competition, promote and sustain competition, protect the interests of consumers and ensure freedom of trade in the markets of India.
The Commission is also required to give an opinion on competition issues on a reference received from a statutory authority established under any law and to undertake competition advocacy, create public awareness and impart training on competition issues. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): The work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project is going on in full swing in Maharashtra, with major structural and tunnelling milestones being achieved, according to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said on Saturday. According to the NHSRCL, work on all three elevated stations in the state, Thane, Virar, and Boisar, is advancing swiftly, and the first slabs for Virar and Boisar stations have recently been cast. Across the alignment, pier foundations and pier works are underway at various locations, with approximately 44 km of piers cast to date. In the Palghar district, viaduct construction has also commenced using full-span box girder launching technology, starting from the Dahanu area. Additionally, the excavation of seven mountain tunnels in the Palghar district is actively in progress, demonstrating the project's engineering scale and complexity. Bridge construction has also kicked off at three major rivers: Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani, further contributing to the corridor's critical infrastructure. An important component of the project is the 21-kilometre-long underground and undersea tunnel connecting the Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Shilphata. Of the 21 km tunnel, 16 km is being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while 5 km is being executed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The tunnel includes a 7 km undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek, marking a significant feat in Indian tunnelling history. So far, approximately 4.1 km of tunnel heading has been achieved through NATM from the Shilphata site, and two concurrent faces have been developed from the ADIT portal. In terms of vertical construction, base slab casting at the Vikhroli shaft (56 meters deep) and Sawli shaft (39 meters deep) has been completed. Additionally, sludge treatment plants are being installed at shaft locations, and the Mahape tunnel lining casting yard is actively producing tunnel lining segments. For the under-construction Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra Kurla Complex, 80% of the excavation work has been completed. Base slab casting at 100 ft below ground level has already started at both ends of the station site, NHSRCL added. (ANI)

Environment body discusses steps to curb winter stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana
In a move to combat air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) convened two pivotal high-level review meetings in Chandigarh which were attended by Chairperson and members of the Commission, senior officials, Chief Secretaries and officers from Haryana and Punjab. Both the meetings aimed to boost inter-departmental coordination and evaluate the progress of pollution abatement Haryana, the review focused extensively on preparedness to eliminate paddy stubble burning for the year 2025, aligning with the approved Action Plan. Officials assessed the promotion of paddy straw-based biomass pellets in brick kilns and compliance by thermal power plants, especially regarding the ambitious target of at least 5% biomass co-firing for 2025-26. Strategies to mitigate road dust, redevelopment of key roads, and enforcement of vehicular emission norms were also scrutinized. Key directives such as the phasing out of End-of-Life vehicles, installation of Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, and the adoption of cleaner mobility options by transport and delivery services were reviewed. The meeting also examined efforts to transition all buses, including tourist and commercial vehicles entering Delhi, to cleaner fuel modes and discussed plans to eliminate diesel the Punjab review also underscored similar priorities, emphasising on the elimination of paddy stubble burning and mandatory biomass pellet use in brick kilns. Compliance with thermal power plant norms and vehicle emission controls received significant attention. The Commission stressed timely and proactive adherence to statutory directions to prevent a seasonal spike in pollution these discussions, the CAQM team conducted field visits on to various ex-situ paddy stubble management facilities, including pelletisation plants, Compressed Bio-gas (CBG) units, 2G ethanol plants, and industrial boilers in both states. These inspections offered valuable insights into technological advancements and operational Commission reaffirmed the need for strengthened coordination, focused action on the approved plans, and rigorous enforcement of directives to secure measurable improvements in air quality. One Dead, Six Wounded In Indianapolis Shooting
One person was killed and six others wounded in a shooting in the US city of Indianapolis early Saturday, police said, a day after the country celebrated its independence day. The shooting occurred around 1:27 am (0527 GMT) as officers were investigating disturbances, deputy police operations chief Tanya Terry told a news conference. One was pronounced dead at the scene. Five wounded people were taken from the scene to hospital for treatment, while a sixth walked into a medical facility in a stable condition. Three of the victims were juveniles, including the person who died, Terry said, without providing the ages and conditions of the other victims. Police recovered several firearms at the scene and detained around seven people for questioning. Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey condemned recurring violence in the city's downtown area, particularly involving young people. "A kid is dead tonight," Bailey told reporters. "It's unacceptable." The police chief said officers made about 20 arrests throughout the night and recovered guns from minors, including "an assault rifle stuffed in the front of his pants." Bailey criticised parents for allowing "hundreds of unsupervised kids" to roam the downtown area at night. "We are not your children's keeper. You are," he said. "Parents and guardians have got to step up." The chief said thousands of people had come downtown for fireworks and left peacefully, but others stayed and "caused trouble." The shooting marked the second weekend of violence in downtown Indianapolis, according to the police chief. Serious gun violence is common across the United States, where many states have few barriers to the purchasing of firearms, despite widespread support for greater gun control.
