Google updates 'G' icon after a decade: Look at the old and new designs

Google has updated its signature 'G' letter icon. The new logo replaces the solid colour section in the logo with more fluid and transitioning colours
New Delhi
Google has refreshed its iconic 'G' logo for the first time in nearly ten years, introducing a more fluid and visually engaging design to one of the tech world's most recognisable symbols. The new version transitions between its signature four colours — with red blending into yellow, yellow into green, and green into blue — replacing the older solid colour segments.
The circular 'G' icon was originally introduced on September 1, 2015, during a major brand overhaul that also saw the introduction of the current six-letter Google wordmark in a modern sans-serif typeface called Product Sans. Before that redesign, the 'G' was displayed in lowercase white on a blue background.
The refreshed 'G' logo is now rolling out across Google's platforms, including the Google app for both iOS and Android.

The updated logo brings a more vibrant, modern aesthetic that aligns with Google's evolving design language and its increasing focus on artificial intelligence. iOS users have already started to see the new icon in the latest version of the Google Search app, while Android users received it earlier this week with version 16.18 (beta) of the Google app.
According to 9to5Google, the primary six-letter 'Google' wordmark remains unchanged from the version introduced in 2015. There's currently no official information on whether other Google product icons — such as Chrome, Maps, or Drive — will adopt the new gradient style. However, given that these icons also rely on Google's signature four-colour palette, they may receive similar updates in the future.
In related news, Google has updated its Keep note-taking app on the web to support rich text formatting. According to the Google Workspace blog, a new 'Rich Text Formatting' button is being introduced at the bottom-left of the editor. This will bring up a toolbar with formatting options like H1, H2, and Aa (regular text), as well as bold, italic, underline, and a clear formatting tool.

Google offers buyouts to workers; OpenAI in talks with Saudi Arabia, Indian investors to raise funds; Meta, TikTok challenge fees in EU court

Google offers buyouts to workers Google is offering buyouts to more employees in another round of layoffs as the tech giant awaits a court verdict in its search and ads antitrust lawsuit. The Sundar Pichai-led company has confirmed the news although it hasn't disclosed the number of employees who will be affected. The employees are spread across the search, advertising, research and engineering segments. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta is deciding whether to ban Google's exclusive agreement with Apple which sets Chrome as its search browser. The judgment is expected to be given before Labour Day after which Google can appeal last year's decision where the company was defined as a monopoly. The federal judge ruled that Google's digital ads business was said to abuse its market power and tamp down on competition. In 2023, the company laid off 12,000 workers post a hiring splurge that Big Tech companies were on during the pandemic. OpenAI in talks with Saudi Arabia, Indian investors to raise funds OpenAI is reportedly in discussions with new investors including Saudi's PIF, India's Reliance Industries and existing shareholder United Arab Emirates' MGX to raise $40 billion in funds. The investors are expected to invest at least hundreds of millions of dollars each, a report by 'The Information' said. The funds will be used to develop AI infrastructure as a part of their Stargate venture which is in partnership with SoftBank. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Indian IT Minister earlier this year, after which he also planned to meet the Abu Dhabi investment group MGX. The AI firm is also speaking with Coatue and Founders Fund to raise atleast $100 million each. The report also stated that OpenAI could be raising an additional $17 billion in 2027. OpenAI hasn't confirmed the reports yet. Meta, TikTok challenge fees in EU court Meta and TikTok are fighting EU regulators on a supervisory fee and that's levied and how it's calculated, in the second highest court in Europe. The social media platforms called the fee disproportionate and measured on a flawed methodology. The companies along with 16 other tech companies had to pay a supervisory fee which was 0.05% of their annual worldwide net income under the Digital Services Act that became a law in 2022. The fee intends to cover the EU's cost of monitoring their compliance with the law. The size of the annual fee is based on the number of average monthly active users for each platform. Meta said that it wasn't trying to avoid its share of the fee but it was questioning the way the amount had been calculated. A representative for TikTok said that the EU had counted users who logged into their phones and from their laptops twice.

Google's New AI Mode Button Signals Bigger Role for AI in Everyday Search

Google is making a bold move to reshape how users interact with its iconic search engine. In its latest experiment, the company has started testing a new AI Mode button directly on the Google Search homepage, hinting at a major shift in how people might access information in the near future. The new feature, currently available to a limited group of users through the Search Labs program, places an AI Mode shortcut in the search bar itself — right next to the microphone and Google Lens icons. The button features a sparkling magnifying glass icon, and clicking it leads users to a dedicated page: Here, users can view a panel with their search history and interact with AI-generated responses to their queries. This isn't the first time Google has explored embedding AI into its search tools. The button was previously spotted on the mobile Google app but is now quietly appearing on desktop platforms. In some instances, it even replaces the long-standing "I'm Feeling Lucky" button — a familiar and nostalgic feature of the homepage. While the button's design includes a brief colourful animation upon page load, the visual flair fades quickly. The feature remains under limited testing and has yet to roll out to the general public. On Android, some beta testers have also noticed the AI Mode reappearing in the search widget, though it hasn't made its way to stable releases yet. Despite the promising capabilities of AI in streamlining search, the growing integration of AI has stirred concerns among content publishers. As AI-generated summaries and answers — like those from Google's AI Overviews — become more prominent, users increasingly find answers directly on the search results page, skipping traditional website visits. This shift has had measurable effects. A recent Wall Street Journal report highlighted that The New York Times saw its traffic from Google Search drop to 36.5% in April 2025, down from 44% in 2022, according to data from Similarweb. While Google maintains that AI Overviews have led to higher user engagement, the company has not clarified whether this uptick benefits publishers or simply reflects changes in user behaviour. During its May 2025 developer event, the tech giant focused on showcasing AI's expanding role in Search but remained vague on monetization details for content creators. In response, some media houses are now seeking partnerships or licensing deals with AI firms to stay viable in this new landscape. Notably, The New York Times has inked an agreement with Amazon, and The Atlantic has entered a collaboration with OpenAI. Meanwhile, AI startup Perplexity is exploring a more equitable model by sharing ad revenue with publishers when their content appears in AI-generated responses. As Google continues to experiment with AI-driven features, this new homepage button may be more than a UI tweak — it could redefine how people find and interact with information online.

Google to Limit Pixel 6A Battery Capacity Over Overheating Concerns

In response to growing concerns over overheating, Google is rolling out a mandatory software update to certain Pixel 6A smartphones that will limit battery capacity and charging performance after the device has reached 400 charge cycles. 'A subset of Pixel 6A phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating,' said Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi. 'The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We'll contact impacted customers next month; with all the information they need to address the issue.' This move mirrors a similar update Google issued earlier this year for the Pixel 4A, which also saw battery capacity lowered to reduce the risk of overheating. The issue gained urgency after Android Authority highlighted two separate incidents involving Pixel 6A units catching fire, including one alarming case where a user on Reddit reported the phone 'spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.' Adding to the credibility of these concerns, code discovered in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update referenced a warning for Pixel 6A users about 'a potential battery overheating issue' and directed them to a support link— which has yet to go live. In a related development, Google previously announced an extended repair program in April for Pixel 7A models experiencing battery swelling, reflecting the company's broader efforts to manage battery-related risks across its Pixel lineup.
