August Moon: Here's what to look for during all 4 major moon phases

The ever-shifting phases of Earth's moon present a wealth of targets for amateur astronomers to explore, ranging from magnificent craters and lunar seas to strange visual phenomena created as sunlight plays across the ancient surface, forming familiar shapes where none should be.
So, grab your telescope and join us on a short, guided "road trip" of August's moon, in which we'll highlight a series of stunning targets to explore during each moon phase.
Any backyard telescope will allow you to pick out the targets on our list, though a scope with an aperture of 6 inches or more will help reveal more detail across ancient lunar landscapes. The first quarter moon (Aug. 1)
The nights following each new moon phase will see the line separating night from day on the lunar surface creep inexorably westward. By Aug. 1, this line of demarcation — known as the terminator — will divide the lunar surface in two, heralding the onset of the moon's "first quarter phase." During this phase, the moon will already be high in the sky at sunset, with its right side fully lit and its left hidden under a veil of shadow.
The nights leading up to Aug. 1 present a perfect opportunity to search for the historic Apollo 11 landing site on the southwestern shore of Mare Tranquilitatis (Latin for the Sea of Tranquility), from where Neil Armstrong announced "the Eagle has landed" on July 20, 1969. Mare Tranquilitatis is easily visible to the naked eye as a dark basaltic plain close to the equator to the right of the terminator, as indicated on the graphic below.
A 6-inch telescope will help you zero in on the landing zone — known as Tranquility Base — by looking to the lower right of the prominent Ritter and Sabine craters, which can be found on the western edge of the lunar mare.
Two nights later, on Aug. 4, the moon's terminator will fall slightly to the west of the Sinus Iridum impact basin, causing a brilliant "Golden Handle' to appear in the northwest region of the lunar surface. This striking effect occurs when the sun's rays pick out the peaks of the Montes Jura mountain range on the northern edge of Mare Imbrium.
The full "Sturgeon Moon" (Aug. 9)
By Aug. 9, the relentless westward march of the terminator will have swept across the entirety of the lunar surface, setting the stage for the full "Sturgeon Moon" to slip above the horizon at sunset, local time. The Sturgeon Moon is named for the time of year when the titular fish are most readily caught; it presents a good opportunity to observe the mighty form of Tycho crater extending its influence over the lunar disk.
Tycho is easily visible to the naked eye, thanks in part to the vast streaks (or rays) of reflective material cast outward across the lunar surface in the wake of the brutal asteroid impact that created the 53-mile-wide (85-kilometer) crater. Every one of the moon's larger impact sites would have once played host to a bright ray system like Tycho, though exposure to the harsh space environment has since caused many to fade. After all, Tycho formed a mere 108 million years ago, while other lunar craters have been estimated to be 3.9 billion years of age.
The August full moon also presents a great time to learn the locations of the many lunar mare (Latin for "seas") that can be spotted with the naked eye as the surface of Earth's natural satellite darkens. Each of the mare visible today were created billions of years ago, when lava flows filled the network of lunar craters carved out by powerful asteroid strikes. The lava lakes swiftly hardened to "repave" the moon, forming enormous basaltic plains that can be explored without the need for a telescope or binoculars.
Mare Crisium can be spotted as a dark oval to the northeast of the lunar surface, while Mare Tranquillitatis (the Sea of Tranquility) — which plays host to the Apollo 11 landing site — is located to its left, bordered to the north by Mare Serenitatis (the Sea of Serenity).
The equatorial region to the westward side of the lunar disk is dominated by Oceanus Procellarum (the Ocean of Storms), with Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Showers) to the north and Mare Nubium (the Sea of Clouds) to the south.
The third quarter moon (Aug. 16)
The passing of the full moon will see the terminator return to sweep over the eastern limb of the lunar surface until, finally, on Aug. 16, the third quarter moon will rise, with its right half bathed in shadow and its left illuminated by direct sunlight.
Aug. 16 is a great opportunity to observe a dramatic display of light and shadow play across the terminator and to hunt down a pair of massive craters named to honor two legendary ancient Greek philosophers, inventors and astronomers: Plato and Archimedes.
Look for the 62-mile-wide (10 km) Plato Crater just below the narrow form of Mare Frigoris soon after the moon rises around midnight on Aug. 16. Then, follow the terminator south to find the similarly sized Archimedes impact site above the pronounced sweep of the Montes Apenninus mountain range.
The following night (Aug. 17) is a wonderful time to see the Copernicus and Kepler craters brightening Oceanus Procellarum. Both impact sites are surrounded by bright ejecta rays, albeit less pronounced than those exhibited by Tycho further to the south.
The Copernicus Crater looks particularly impressive around this time, with its westward rim and central peak cast into relief by the oblique angle of the sun. Copernicus had been proposed as a candidate landing site for the Apollo 18 crewed lunar mission, though the program was cancelled long before its scheduled launch date due to budget constraints.
New moon (August 23)
During the new moon phase, the lunar disk lurks unseen in the daytime sky, leaving the night unblemished by the glare of reflected sunlight. Head away from city lights around this time to hunt the glowing band of the Milky Way's core, which can be spotted during the summer months streaming towards the eastern horizon as dusk gives way to night in dark sky locations.
The moon will appear as a slim waning or waxing crescent on a handful of nights before and after the new moon phase, during which you may see the shadow-veiled expanse of the lunar surface infused with a soft glow. This phenomenon, known as "Earthshine," or the "Da Vinci Glow," occurs when the moon is positioned roughly between our planet and the sun, at which point sunlight reflected off Earth's surface bathes the unlit lunar disk in a subtle glow.

Does the scientific community as a whole share the notion that a newly discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is an alien spacecraft heading to Earth for a "surprise attack" in November 2025? No, that's not true: The NASA website says that it's a comet and that it doesn't pose any risk to Earth. Three astronomers told Lead Stories that, as of this writing, the scientific community overwhelmingly shares this view. The scientist proposing the alien theory said he did so to challenge people to think, while, nevertheless, implying an interest in an influx of government money to fund that line of inquiry. The claim appeared in a post (archived here and here) on TikTok on July 27, 2025, under the following caption: Scientists at Harvard discovered an unknown object headed towards the Earth at 130,000 mph and its 15 miles in diameter and apparently is very unusual and possibly a space craft. #space #aliens The narrator in the video continued: Now they're saying it's going to be here by the end of November. They don't just think it's an object. They think it's a spacecraft coming to attack the Earth. It's called 3I/ATLAS, and they're worried about a surprise attack. This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing: According to the NASA website (archived here), 3I/ATLAS was first discovered on July 1, 2025. The shape of its path, differentiating from orbit around the Sun, allowed astronomers to conclude that it's an interstellar object, the third known of that class. While some of its characteristics are yet to be determined, the scientific community agrees that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, reads the NASA website: ...it has an icy nucleus and coma (a bright cloud of gas and dust surrounding a comet as it approaches the Sun). This is why astronomers categorize it as a comet... The space agency additionally clarifies that, contrary to the posts on social media, 3I/ATLAS poses no danger to Earth: Although the trajectory of the object brings it into the inner solar system, it won't come close to Earth. As the comet 3I/ATLAS journeys through the solar system, it won't come closer than 1.6 au (about 150 million miles, or 240 million kilometers) to our planet. Despite this information being publicly available on a government website, many other posts were trending under the keywords "massive alien mothership approaching Earth": for example, here (archived here and here), here (archived here and here) and here (archived here and here). Some of them, specifically professor Avi Loeb (archived here), of Harvard University's Astronomy Department. Talking to a CBS affiliate (archived here and here) in late July 2025, he implied that the newly discovered object can be anything, including being a technological product of another civilization. On August 1, 2025, Lead Stories contacted Loeb via email to clarify his views. On the same day, he wrote back, suggesting, among other things, that "3I/ATLAS might be an alien probe based on its unusually rare trajectory". Loeb, however, went on to explain the alien theory was a kind of thought experiment, saying: I laid out this possibility in order to encourage observers who are convinced that 3I/ATLAS is a comet to collect as much data as possible in an attempt to prove me wrong... Even if 49 out of the next 50 interstellar objects to be discovered by the Rubin Observatory will turn out to be comets or asteroids, the one outlier of technological origin might change the future of humanity. He also pointed out that a draft version of one of his papers that has yet to undergo a peer review process -- "Is the Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS Alien Technology?" (archived here) -- reads: We strongly emphasize that this paper is largely a pedagogical exercise, with interesting discoveries and strange serendipities, worthy of a record in the scientific literature. By far the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet... At the same time, Loeb, who made similar claims rejected by the scientific community before (archived here), said: Committees of mainstream scientists who decide how to allocate federal funds often resist investments in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence by arguing that it is too risky and might result in wasting taxpayers' money. But if these reviewers were humble enough to ask the taxpayers what they wish to spend their tax money on, they would find the search for extraterrestrial intelligence to be at the top of the priority list. Gatekeeping and ridicule are not the landscape I wished for when I started my scientific career 45 years ago... Earlier, on July 31, 2025, Chris Lintott (archived here), a professor of astrophysics at the University of Oxford, referred to Loeb's theory of alien involvement as "absolute nonsense", continuing: It's a comet, and no danger at all. It's exciting enough we get to study an object that formed before the Sun was born, and there's no need to invent stupid stories to get attention. Two more astronomers told Lead Stories: The existing consensus among the members of the scientific community is that 3I/ATLAS is a comet. Jane Luu (archived here), a professor of astrophysics (archived here) at the University of Oslo, emphasized in a phone conversation with Lead Stories on August 1, 2025, that it's not just her or a few other people but many scientists who are currently studying 3I/ATLAS. She said there is no evidence to support speculations about the nature of 3I/ATLAS: Our observations have shown it's a comet. It doesn't come close to Earth: It's not on a collision course. On August 1, 2025, David Jewitt (archived here), a UCLA professor of astronomy, told Lead Stories via email: I've seen a lot of comets, and all I can say is that 3I looks to me like a comet. When asked to evaluate the potential risks posed by the comet, he said: There's more danger that your toaster oven will explode, assuming you have a toaster oven.

As evidence continues to mount that the mysterious object with interstellar origins currently speeding toward the inner solar system at a breakneck speed is a comet, not everybody's convinced quite yet. Harvard astronomer and alien hunter Avi Loeb raised the far-fetched, yet tantalizing possibility that the object, which was first spotted by astronomers earlier this year, could have been sent by an extraterrestrial civilization. While he admitted in a blog post last month that it's most likely that "3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet," a letter to the editors of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics has Loeb questioning that conclusion once more. At the heart of the conundrum is the purported comet's tail. The glowing globs of icy particulates conventionally leave a trail of gas and dust in a comet's wake, resulting in their distinctive shape. However, there's a slim chance that 3I/ATLAS may be an outlier. According to the paper, which was authored by an international team of astronomers, 3I/ATLAS "exhibits increasing dust activity and reddening colors during the observation period, with no visible tail detected." The lack of a tail could be "likely due to viewing geometry and low dust production," they posited. The researchers, therefore, called on the astronomy community to continue monitoring the unusual object to glean more "insights into the evolution of interstellar materials under solar radiation." Loeb agreed with the sentiment, arguing in a recent blog post that the "more data we collect, the more difficult it would be for scientists to shove anomalies of 3I/ATLAS under the carpet of traditional thinking." "We are used to finding icy rocks which exhibit familiar cometary tails in the solar system," he added, "but an encounter with objects from interstellar space is a blind date on astronomical scales." To Loeb, it's still too early to definitively conclude that 3I/ATLAS is a comet. To the astronomer, who previously authored a book about the possibility that 'Oumuamua, an interstellar object first observed in 2017, may have been an sent to us by an alien civilization, there's still enough compelling evidence suggesting otherwise. In a follow-up blog post, he pointed out a separate paper, showing that the first images taken of the object by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope showed a nucleus "surrounded by a much larger cloud of dust," and a "diffuse emission ahead of its motion towards the Sun rather than a trailing tail as expected from a typical comet." Loeb has also suggested that 3I/ATLAS' highly unusual trajectory is "fine-tuned to get unusually close to Jupiter, Mars and Venus," an exceedingly improbable path. Loeb and his colleagues have also posited that the object's large size — roughly 12.4 miles in diameter, according to his calculations — makes it an immensely rare, once-in-only-10,000-years encounter. To neatly summarize his stance on the chance that we're looking at a visitor from an interstellar civilization, Loeb and his colleagues constructed the "Loeb Scale," which ranks the chance of a given object being alien technology on a scale of one to ten, where one is "likely natural," and 10 is "confirmed technology" of "extraterrestrial artificial origin." The scale takes "incorporates multiple observable characteristics, including trajectory anomalies, spectroscopic signatures, geometric properties, and other observable characteristics that could distinguish natural from potentially artificial objects" into account. This week, Loeb gave 3I/ATLAS his "Loeb Scale" rating. "As of now, I give 3I/ATLAS a rank of 6, but note that this rank is time-dependent as it reflects the limited data we have so far," he wrote in his blog post. He also took the opportunity to once again warn that the scientific community shouldn't dismiss the possibility of a first encounter, no matter how far-fetched. "The scientific method allows for all possible questions, which are later answered by collecting data and ruling out possibilities," he wrote. "It is anti-scientific to suppress curiosity-driven questions about anomalies before conclusive data is gathered to explain them." Nuclear reactors have been generating power on Earth for more than 70 years. How hard would it be to place one on the moon to provide copious, continuous energy through the cold, dark, two-week-long lunar nights? And could that be accomplished in less than five years? Sean Duffy, the secretary of transportation who is now also NASA's acting administrator, called for just that last week: a reactor producing 100 kilowatts of electricity — enough to power about 80 households in the United States — that would launch to the moon before 2030. Why put a nuclear reactor in space? Nuclear reactor technology would transform the ability of humanity to travel and live in the solar system. Many of NASA's robotic spacecraft today operate at power levels equivalent to what a few incandescent lightbulbs consume. That limits what scientific instruments can be put on board. The International Space Station gets its energy from swaths of solar panels, but that is not practical for human habitats on the moon, where the cold, dark night lasts two weeks, or on Mars, where the sun is farther away and dimmer. Nuclear reactors would also enable faster and more efficient propulsion systems. Putting radioactive energy sources in space is not unusual. The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes, which are still operating after launching in 1977, are powered by plutonium, with the heat of natural radioactive decay turned into electricity. The plutonium heat initially generated 470 watts. In the decades since, the power output has dwindled to about 225 watts. But the plutonium power sources on the Voyagers are more like batteries than nuclear power plants on Earth.
