China's DeepSeek releases update to AI model that sent US shares tumbling earlier this year

Shanghai
Reuters —
Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek released an update to its R1 reasoning model in the early hours of Thursday, stepping up competition with US rivals such as OpenAI.
DeepSeek launched R1-0528 on developer platform Hugging Face, but has yet to make an official public announcement. It did not publish a description of the model or comparisons.
But the LiveCodeBench leaderboard, a benchmark developed by researchers from UC Berkeley, MIT, and Cornell, ranked DeepSeek's updated R1 reasoning model just slightly behind OpenAI's o4 mini and o3 reasoning models on code generation and ahead of xAI's Grok 3 mini and Alibaba's Qwen 3.
Bloomberg earlier reported the update on Wedneday. It said that a DeepSeek representative had told a WeChat group that it had completed what it described as a 'minor trial upgrade' and that users could start testing it.
DeepSeek earlier this year upended beliefs that US export controls were holding back China's AI advancements after the startup released AI models that were on a par with or better than industry-leading models in the United States at a fraction of the cost.
The launch of R1 in January sent tech shares outside China plummeting in January and challenged the view that scaling AI requires vast computing power and investment. Since R1's release, Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent have released models claiming to surpass DeepSeek's.
Google's Gemini has introduced discounted tiers of access while OpenAI cut prices and released an o3 mini model that relies on less computing power.
The company is still widely expected to release R2, a successor to R1. Reuters reported in March, citing sources, that R2's release was initially planned for May. DeepSeek also released an upgrade to its V3 large language model in March.

Shanghai Futures Exchange Opens Doors to Foreign Investors in Move to Boost China's Influence in Global Metals Markets

Waleed Farouk The Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) announced on Tuesday 34 new regulatory proposals aimed at opening China's futures market to foreign investors and brokers, as part of efforts to support the internationalization of the Chinese currency (RMB) and enhance China's influence in global commodity pricing. The proposals cover multiple areas, including gold and silver options trading, hedging, and precious metals futures trading. The exchange emphasized that the goal is "full opening to foreign participants." Tiger Shi, CEO of BANDS Financial, told Reuters that this announcement represents "a fundamental change in the Shanghai Exchange's constitution," noting that direct foreign access to the exchange's products is "now on the fast track." Key proposed changes: Allowing foreign brokers and investors to trade directly without the need for local intermediaries. Accepting margin in foreign currencies such as the US dollar. A public comment period on the proposals will be open until June 4. A broader strategy to internationalize the Chinese market This move aligns with an earlier announcement on April 21 by the People's Bank of China (PBoC) and three other government agencies, which included investments to promote the internationalization of the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE), including the establishment of international delivery warehouses, in preparation for competing with the London Metal Exchange (LME) for its role in global gold pricing. A report issued at the time by Jinshi Data indicated that the plan aims to "enhance Shanghai's capacity as an international financial center for the allocation of global resources." It includes developing a platform for trading cross-border financial assets, supporting cooperation with foreign exchanges in product pricing, and expanding the use of renminbi reference prices in global markets. Reshaping the Global Pricing Map Although China is the world's largest consumer of precious metals, the pricing of most of its transactions remains tied to international prices, such as those issued by the London Metal Exchange. However, Beijing seeks to change this equation by making Shanghai futures a global benchmark, potentially dismantling Western dominance of metals markets for the first time in more than 140 years. Reuters previously reported that China's success in attracting foreign traders to the Shanghai Exchange will give its contracts a global benchmark and reduce reliance on Western price signals. In statements to state media, Wang Fenghai, general manager of the Shanghai Exchange, said that internationalizing the market is a prerequisite for strengthening China's influence in metals pricing. He added that the exchange is working to develop cross-border delivery capabilities by establishing warehouses outside China to store the metals associated with its futures contracts. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

China Hosts World's First Humanoid Robot Fighting Competition

HANGZHOU, China – The world's first international fighting tournament among humanoid robots has taken place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The China Media Group (CMG) organized the competition, as reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS. The tournament was divided into two parts: a demonstration segment and a competitive segment. In the first part, robots showcased their combat skills through single and group performances. In the second part, operators controlled the robots in real time using a special system. Each bout consisted of three rounds, each lasting two minutes. Punches were evaluated according to a point system: one point was awarded for an accurate punch with the hand, and three points for a kick with the foot. A participant lost five points for a knockdown, and if a robot did not get up within eight seconds, it was immediately disqualified. The robot controlled by operator Lu Xin emerged as the winner. In the final round, Lu Xin's robot knocked out its opponent in all three rounds. According to an equipment tester, professional athletes were involved in the preparation of the robots. Sensors were fitted to the athletes to record their movements. This data then formed the basis of training algorithms using artificial intelligence, which enabled the robots to practice various punches, from hooks to uppercuts.

Construction of Egypt's Kom Ombo 500-MW solar power plant completed

CAIRO - 29 May 2025: Construction of the 500-megawatt Kom Ombo solar power plant project in Egypt has been completed, Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang announced Thursday. Kom Ombo solar power plant is the largest solar photovoltaic plant of its kind in Egypt, built by China Energy Construction and marking an important step towards promoting renewable energy. The ambassador added on X that the Kom Ombo solar power plant project has an installed direct current generation capacity of 560 megawatts and includes more than one million photovoltaic panels, in addition to a 220 kilovolt (kV) booster station. He also said the project is expected to provide clean, green, and stable electricity to some 256,000 Egyptian households annually once it is officially operational. Liqiang emphasized that this station will significantly contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 760,000 tons annually, which will provide strong momentum for Egypt toward achieving the green development goals of Vision 2030. He explained that this is not just the implementation of an energy project, but also represents a model for Chinese-Egyptian cooperation to create a green future. China will continue to leverage its comprehensive advantages across the entire industrial chain, deeply participating in the investment and construction of photovoltaic, wind, energy storage, hydrogen, and gas turbine fields in Egypt, he said, as well as assisting in the transformation and upgrading of Egypt's energy structure.
