Geraldton Buccaneers overcome Joondalup Wolves at home after coach Dayle Joseph ejected
Buccs star Johny Narkle stole the show with a 33-point performance on Saturday night at Activewest Stadium, while amassing nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks as the Wolves had no answer for him.
Buccs' big man Liam Hunt also impressed with yet another double-double. Hunt led the charge with 21 points, three assists and 11 rebounds.
The Buccs led early in the first quarter with a quick start for the home side. Hunt got the ball rolling for the Buccs with the first points of the game coming from the field.
Akeem Springs and Narkle also got their night started early in the first period with Narkle jumping on the scoreboard with seven points.
A fightback by the Wolves in the second period saw the momentum swing in the visitors' favour, which saw Joondalup being clinical from beyond the arc while the Buccs fell off the pace as the Wolves took advantage. Joondalup led the Buccs by two points going into the main break, 49-47.
It was a close third quarter with neither team able to pull away. The Wolves put a lot of attention on Narkle as the star local began to feel the pressure before an apparent missed call led to the ejection of coach Dayle Joseph.
After what he believed was a missed call from one of the referees, Joseph was seen to be upset with the decision and in the referee's eyes it was enough to eject him from the game late in the third quarter.
Joseph said he didn't think he deserved to be booted from the contest.
'I don't know what I did to deserve to be thrown out,' he said.
'I jumped up and down a bit, but other than that I don't know what he (the referee) saw.
'It was a heated game, the crowd probably got under his skin with some previous missed calls, so it seemed a bit reactive.
'Myself and Johny (Narkle) had already got a tech earlier in the game so it was better that I got it rather than him being ejected.'
Without their coach, the Buccs were forced to stand up going into the fourth quarter, only leading by seven points.
Nik DeSantis set the tone with a quick three in the last term before an onslaught from the Buccs saw them run away with the game as the crowd rose to their feet and drove the home side to the final buzzer.
Joseph said the win was massive in the context of their season.
'It was a really important win for us at home considering they got the better of us earlier in the season,' he said.
'To beat them by 20 points too is really impressive from our group and to stand up when we did was pleasing.'
The Buccs ran away with the win by 20 points with the final score 103-83.
The victory sees the Buccs jump into the top four on the NBL1 West ladder, as they set their sights on seventh-placed Mandurah Magic this Saturday at Activewest Stadium.

White, Flames seek ultimate glory
The road to the NBL1 West men's championship will run through Rockingham after the Flames secured top spot and a bevy of regular season awards ahead of the playoffs. Star recruit Isaac White was named league MVP on Saturday night to further justify his shift west during the NBL off-season. White, who led the Flames with 30 points per game, was also named in the league's All Star team alongside the man many had tipped for the best player award, Stirling Senators shooter Elijah Pepper. As for Kingston Charm, she is more a miler than a two-miler and provided the track plays fair on the weekend, she will be launching her bid hard and fast as was the case when an unlucky second in the July 12 Midway here. • Untapped talent chasing another win at Randwick on Saturday RANTAN (race 9) is one of two runners at HQ on Saturday for the Hall of Famer, Ron Quinton. Now if they both happened to win, Quinton would have trained exactly 100 winners at Royal Randwick. God knows how many winners he rode here/there! As for Rantan, she has been racing without much luck this preparation but we know from all the way back to her 900m debut win at Newcastle that she has a booming finish when clear. TRIAL POINTERS SHAGGY (race 1) is fast! Very fast! Remember he ran 45 seconds to win his 800m debut by almost six lengths. Hard to know what this exorbitant rail placement means on the day but surely barrier one, first use of the track, with an 11m rail out, can only boost Shaggy's already undeniable winning prospects. Won a Beaumont heat on July 9 – nicely. STARMAN (race 7) may not be every punter's cup of tea. To be fair to the horse, he is somewhere in between a non-winner and perennially unlucky. If you consider that he has placed five times in 11 Randwick runs then he is probably worth a look at $4 the place and $18 the win for the brave ones.

A win on their home track would be the perfect end to a career best season for trainers Barbara Joseph and her sons Paul and Matt Jones. The stable set themselves a target of 52 winners for the year and enter the meeting on 51 winners with a strong hand to held them reach their goal. Jones was extremely happy with the run of Graceful Ellen when a neck second at Narrandera two weeks ago and gives her a great chance to go one better in the Class 2 Handicap (1200m) with stable apprentice Claire Ramsbotham aboard. 'She is a little filly who isn't overly robust but she is really well and I'm very happy with her,' he said. 'Claire rode her very aggressive the other day to suit how Narrandera was playing. 'The two speed horses around her dropped out and she was still fighting out the finish. It was a really good effort. 'She goes into this meeting as one of our best chances.' Although finishing down the track at both runs back from a spell, Jones feels Zouwase can figure prominently when he steps up to a suitable distance in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1600m). 'He has just been a bit immature in his action and changes stride two or three times in the straight,' he said. 'I just have to try and convince the jockeys to ride through it and he will hit the line. 'At home he is working very well. Billy (Owen) has ridden him once this week to get a feel for him. 'Walk The Pier is coming off a good win for a new stable and out of stronger races prior to that. He will be hard to beat but stepping up to the mile with the blinkers back on will help Zouwase.' Jones was pleasantly surprised by the debut performance of Texas Star when third behind Sir Franklin and The Main Event at Moruya and expects him to run well again in the Super Maiden Handicap (1200m) despite a wide draw. 'He was giving away a lot of experience but I was very happy with his run behind two pretty nice horses,' Jones said. 'Unfortunately, he has draw out wide so we might have to be a little negative early and try and get across to the rail and sneak some runs. 'I feel when the track is wet there, it's better to be closer to the rail as you turn into the straight.' Jones was pleased to see Kneel Down draw a good gate in the opening event, the Maiden Plate (1000m) after wide draws impacted on his two runs at Moruya. 'He drew well at his first start and was beaten a head but he drew wide at his next two starts where he had to be ridden backwards,' he said. We have freshened him up and blinkers on and his work on Tuesday was excellent.' Jones said She's High Society is ready to run a big race first-up in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m) despite not having a barrier trial or jumpout. 'With a lack of barrier trials jumpouts, we have given her eight or nine gallops to get her ready and she is working the house down,' he said. 'She drawn well and if she can hang on the back of Sir Franklin, I think she can run in the top three.' EPAULLO CREED (2) has placed two of his last three. Up in grade but drops 4kg on his last start nose second to East Harlem. Returns from a spell after two nice trials behind Bandi's Boy and Cambar. THE MAIN EVENT (3) returned from a long spell with a string closing run from last of 12 on the corner to finish a three-quarter length second to Sir Franklin over 1010m at Moruya on July 11. Step up to 1200m suits and drawn to settle closer. TEXAN STAR (3) was on debut when coming from the send half of the field to finish third to Sir Franklin. Will be prominent again.
