Emerging acts and local talent shine in Osheaga's stacked weekend lineup
Osheaga is upon us, and while the big-name headliners are sure to draw the crowds, there are plenty of hidden gems worth discovering. Darcy MacDonald, a freelance writer who's been covering Montreal's music scene for 15 years, shared some of his must-see performances — a mix of local acts and rising stars that might just become your new favourites. Friday Joey Valence & Brae, a young hip-hop duo from Pennsylvania, take the Valley Stage at 3:55 p.m. Macdonald says to expect a high-energy set — the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Magi Merlin, a Montreal-based artist, hits the SiriusXM stage at 5:30 p.m. The Saint-Lazare native is known for her blend of alternative R&B and neo-soul. Bibi Club, a Canadian indie-pop duo, will be belting out tunes on the SiriusXM stage at 6:15 p.m. PyPy, a Montreal psych-punk band, takes over the SiriusXM stage at 7:30 p.m. 'Each act brings something profoundly different from the other, but they're all super entertaining,' said MacDonald. Saturday BéLi, the stage name of Montreal-based singer-songwriter Ariane Béliveau, will make her Osheaga debut at 4 p.m. on the SiriusXM stage. TV on the Radio, an Indie rock band from Brooklyn, will perform on the Valley stage at 7 p.m. 'TV on the Radio from Brooklyn in the early aughts. Absolutely adore them, and I've never seen them, which is kind of crazy. So, I'm really looking forward to that,' MacDonald added. Sunday Debby Friday, an electronic musician who grew up in Montreal and is now based in Toronto, will hit the Valley Stage at 2 p.m. She won the Polaris Music Prize in 2023. Turbine, a trio originally from France and now based in Montreal, will deliver a sample-based electronic performance on the Island Stage, also at 2 p.m. 'Both of these talents are high-level,' MacDonald noted.

Osheaga nearly sold out as trade tensions linger

Osheaga brings in 150-thousand music fans from all over the world for three days, plus an army of staff working the event. The forecast for the 18th edition is sunny, but the political climate has thrown some shade. Professor Julian Karaguesian from McGill University's economics department said, 'The uncertainty about tariffs and the uncertainty about the border have a larger impact than the tariffs themselves. They do. And uncertainty generally, when it passes a certain threshold, is really toxic for investment. It's toxic for business.' Nick Farkas, Evenko's senior vice president for booking and concerts, is also the man who founded Osheaga. He said uncertainty stunts business expectations. 'How it impacts the Canadian dollar and how it impacts, whether people can get comfortable going back and forth over the border.' Karaguesian said trade and tariff talks also affect tourism. 'Year over year, June 24 to June 25, the latest data shows that visits by Americans by car show over the land borders down by 11 per cent and by air, I think it was down by almost 1 per cent.' Yet, Farkas says this weekend is almost sold out. 'Our American sales are pretty much on par with last year, versus Quebec, Ontario, America and the outside international sales. So far, it's looking pretty similar to last year and the year before. So we're encouraged to see that the Americans are still coming.' Americans are still coming, except for some sponsors, says Osheaga site and operations director Eric Fortin-Lambert. 'Because of what happened with the USA, some sponsorships were not able to be here.' He added that Canadian sponsors stepped into those opportunities. The economic ups and downs of putting on the biggest festival of its kind in Canada are matched only by the high notes onstage. Montreal Artist Emi Jeen has the dream come true experience of playing her favourite music festival and said to expect a rollercoaster ride. 'I start very like high energy and I go a little bit down and then up. There's tons of things. We clap hands, we go down together, we jump. Yeah, we it's a it's a nice ride.' Osheaga will take place on Aug. 1, 2, and 3.

The actor who played interior design firm director Giorgio Barbieri on one episode of the hit Netflix series shared while speaking at Marateale, the international film festival held annually in Maratea, Italy, that he has been let go from the show, according to Vanity Fair this week. 'I was fired. I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me, 'Next year we'll speak,'' he reportedly said. 'I waited for them to call me – but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me.' Everett went on to say that 'show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end. When they write the screenplay, they think they want you – but then things change, and they lose your character. I don't know why.' 'For me, it was a tragedy,' he added. 'I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn't get over it.' CNN has reached out to reps for both Everett and Netflix for comment. Not that the popular actor, who was at the festival in part to receive its Basilicata International Award, is without work. IMDb lists Everett as having multiple upcoming projects, including a comedy titled 'The Liar' opposite Jeff Goldblum, and fans are hopeful that he will reprise his beloved role of Julia Roberts' bestie George Downes in the reported planned sequel to the hit 1997 film 'My Best Friend's Wedding.'
