Cowboys put Trevon Diggs, DeMarvion Overshown on PUP list

Reuters2 days ago
July 21 - Cornerback Trevon Diggs and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown were among the players placed on the active/physically unable to perform list by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
Both players are still recovering from knee surgeries, Overshown in December and Diggs in January. Neither was expected to be ready for the start of the season and it's unclear if Overshown will play at all in 2025.
The Cowboys also placed CB Josh Butler on the PUP list and rookie CB Shavon Revel on the Non-Football Injury list. Butler and Revel are also recovering from torn ACLs. The injury ended Revel's final season at East Carolina.
Overshown underwent surgery to repair three ligaments in his right knee. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament, the medial collateral ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament in the Cowboys' Week 14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Diggs missed six of the last seven games last season with a left knee injury and was eventually moved to injured reserve. The surgery he needed was a chondral tissue graft procedure, which the Cowboys' website said "requires considerable time from the initial injury."
Diggs, 26, recorded two interceptions and 42 tackles in 11 starts in 2024. His injury was to the same knee in which he sustained a torn ACL in practice two games into the 2023 season.
In 58 career games (57 starts) since Dallas drafted Diggs in the second round in 2020, he has recorded 20 interceptions, 63 passes defensed, 215 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he led the league with 11 picks (two returned for touchdowns).
Overshown, 24, was having a breakout campaign in 2024. The 2023 third-round pick recorded 90 tackles (56 solo), eight tackles for loss, five sacks, a fumble recovery and a pick-six in 13 games (12 starts).
At the time of his surgery, then head coach Mike McCarthy said it was likely Overshown would miss the entire 2025 season. The Cowboys are now eyeing a mid-to-late 2025 return.
The Cowboys open training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on Tuesday.

Guardians eke out third straight win over slumping Orioles

July 24 - Steven Kwan's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning lifted the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles 3-2 on Wednesday. After Baltimore reliever Colin Selby (0-2) retired the first two batters in the eighth, Bo Naylor doubled, and Kwan followed with a liner to left field. Colton Cowser's throw home bounced past catcher Alex Jackson, allowing Naylor to score. The Guardians have won 11 of their last 13, including the first three games of the four-game set against the Orioles. Cleveland is 5-1 on a seven-game homestand. The third Cleveland pitcher, Hunter Gaddis (1-1), was the winner, and Emmanuel Clase gained his 23rd save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Selby took his second loss of the series as the Orioles fell for the seventh time in eight games. Baltimore opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Ryan O'Hearn's sacrifice fly that brought home Jordan Westburg. Kyle Manzardo's single in the bottom of the fourth scored Kwan and Jose Ramirez, giving Cleveland a 2-1 lead. The Guardians didn't have a baserunner against Zach Eflin until Kwan led off the frame with a walk. Jackson Holliday opened off the sixth with a solo homer off Guardians starter Slade Cecconi, tying it at 2-all. Eflin worked five innings, giving up two runs on two hits in his first appearance since June 28. The right-hander struck out five and walked one, throwing 84 pitches in his return from lower back tightness. Cecconi was denied his third straight victory, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits in a no-decision. The right-hander struck out two and walked a pair. Bad baserunning by Baltimore short-circuited a potential big inning in the third. With runners on second and third and no outs, Ramon Urias was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to third by Jacob Stallings, and Cedric Mullins was subsequently picked off second base. --Field Level Media

Chris Gotterup doesn't know about ‘heaters,' even if he's on one

July 24 - The past two weeks for Chris Gotterup have been nothing short of incredible. And everyone wants to know why. After winning the Genesis Scottish Open and following that up with a third-place finish at The Open, Gotterup -- set to compete at the 3M Open in Blahine, Minn. this weekend -- doesn't have much of an explanation. "I wish I knew what it was," Gotterup said. "I feel like I've been in a good rhythm and flow over the last couple months. "I was talking to my team the last two months about like, all right, I feel like I've got to take the next step here at some point. I didn't know when it was going to happen, if it was going to happen, but I feel like the Scottish was a big step in the right direction, and then to follow it up ... "Someone asked me last week, media, they were like, have you ever like been on a heater? I was like, I don't think so. Like when I won, I missed the cut the week after. I feel like I've gotten better at just knowing my body and how to react after like, you know, important weeks like that. And yeah, I'm going to try to ride it out as long as I can." To his point, Gotterup's strong play extends back five tournaments now, as he carded three top-30 finishes before his impressive 1-3 the last two weeks. That series of results has elevated him to No. 23 in the official FedEx standings. Understandably, his goals have shifted upward, as he now eyes a top-30 finish and a trip to East Lake for the Tour Championship in late August. "I feel like I have a different set of circumstances in front of me," he said. "I would like to get to East Lake and then obviously see what happens from there. Yeah, I feel like I'm playing with house money at the moment, especially with what's happened. I'm excited for the rest of the season." Gotterup knows the best way to get there is to continue to play well. That might be a tougher assignment at the 3M, where he finished in a tie for 59th a year ago. In his debut at the event in 2022, he finished in a tie for 31st. Fortunately, his confidence right now couldn't be higher. "At The Open, I felt like, all right, I've done this, I've hit some quality shots under the gun. I think it definitely carried over, and I don't see why that won't carry over into the future. It just gave me a bit more confidence knowing that, one, when it's show time, I have the ability to step up and hit the shots." --Field Level Media
