St. John's lands commitment from Providence F Bryce Hopkins
"We are so excited to have Bryce Hopkins part of our family," Pitino tweeted Monday. "He epitomizes everything I love in a basketball player; Passionate, Hungry, and Driven. Can't wait to work with him! Will become a great one for St John's."
The forward spent three seasons at Providence after playing his freshman year at Kentucky. However, knee injury issues have limited him to 17 total games over the past two seasons.
Hopkins tore the ACL in his left knee during a game on Jan. 3, 2024. He missed the rest of that campaign and the start of 2024-25. After returning on Dec. 3 and scoring 16, 16 and 19 points in three games, he suffered a bone bruise in the same knee.
In 50 games at Providence (all starts), he averaged 15.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 44.2 percent from the field.
Hopkins is already the second transfer to sign with St. John's, which was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament but bowed out against Arkansas in the Round of 32. Joson Sanon, a guard from Arizona State who averaged 11.9 ppg as a freshman, previously committed to the Red Storm.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca issues blunt transfer statement after Crystal Palace draw
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was asked about the possibility of signing a new defender beffore the end of the month after the Blues' latest injury issue ahead of their Premier League opener Enzo Maresca offered a curt reply when asked about the prospect of signing a new defender following his side's goalless draw against Crystal Palace. The Italian refused to speak about the issue despite picking up another defensive injury in the build up to the Blues' first Premier League match of the season. Tosin Adarabioyo was the latest figure to make it onto Chelsea's injury list after he was expected to be the man to replace Levi Colwill in Maresca's starting XI. Colwill is expected to miss most of the season after undergoing surgery on an ACL injury picked up in training after the squad returned for pre-season. Against the Eagles, Chelsea's head coach opted to utilise 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong in the heart of defence alongside Trevoh Chalobah. The academy star put in a strong performance on the way to a clean sheet but following Tosin's injury, the question over Maresca's defensive options remains. Speaking on Friday, the ex-Manchester CIty coach revealed that he wanted a new central defender but that the club would look to internal options. Maresca said: "I think we need a central defender. We are looking for an internal solution but as I said, the club know exactly what I think." But when the subject was broached at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Maresca had no interest in adding more fuel to the topic. "You like to talk about central defenders?" he asked the reporter. "I already spoke. Thank you very much." The Blues took just a point from their opening game as they failed to score in a Premier League home game for the first time in 2025. Maresca had some praise for Crystal Palace and is not panicking just yet about his side's performance. "Tough game, we expected a tough game," said Maresca. "Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances but they are a very good team. "We could have counter attacked better, we could have defended better but it is only the first game of the season." The Chelsea boss is unsure when Tosin will be available to him once again. "He had a physical problem, we don't know for how long," he said. "Wes [Fofana] was on the bench, but he was just on the bench to be with us. The plan was not to get any minutes. And now, hopefully for the next one, we can start to use Wes for more minutes." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. The sisters from the same club all named in Wales' Rugby World Cup squad
The sisters from the same club all named in Wales' Rugby World Cup squad Nel and Branwen Metcalfe join Gwenllian and Alaw Pyrs on World Cup duty for Wales Left to right, sisters Nel Metcalfe and Branwen Metcalfe with Alaw Pyrs and Gwenllian Pyrs (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency) One set of siblings in a national team squad is something of a novelty. Two pairs of sisters is even rarer. Having both hail from the same grassroots club is quite something, but that's exactly what happened when Sean Lynn named his Wales squad for this month's Rugby World Cup. Nant Conwy has produced two sets of sisters, with Gwenllian and Alaw Pyrs being joined by Nel and Branwen Metcalfe in the 32-player squad. It's a remarkable achievement for the understandably proud north Wales club. For context, you'd have to go back to 2008 for the last pair of sisters to play for Wales. The Pyrs sisters have played together before, with second-row Alaw making her debut last September to join her sister on the Test stage. Prop Gwenllian has been flying the flag for Nant Conwy for nearly a decade now. As for the Metcalfe sisters, the opportunity to play alongside each other is still ahead of them - with Wales U20s captain Branwen yet to make her senior debut. Normally, the question would be who is the better sister, but in this instance, it's which is the better set of siblings? "There's been no battles in camp yet," jokes Nel. "I'd maybe be quicker, but they're definitely stronger." Article continues below "They're two powerful women," adds 18-year-old Branwen, "so we can't compete! As for who is the better Metcalfe, that one is flat-batted pretty well by back-row Branwen. "We play two very different positions so it's hard to say," she says, skilfully avoiding stirring up any sibling rivalry. Branwen Metcalfe and Nel Metcalfe are in Wales' Rugby World Cup squad (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency) Counting for an eighth of Wales' squad, there's bound to be plenty of support from Nant Conwy when the World Cup kicks off this month. "I think a bus has already been planned for the second game against Canada," says Branwen. "It would be pretty special if we get to play." "It is incredible," adds 20-year-old Nel. "Clwb Rygbi Nant have always been so supportive of us, they've been a massive part of all four of our journeys. "We all started there. We all thank them for everything they've done." The pair came through in similar circumstances in north Wales, playing mixed rugby with boys for a while before moving on to play for Ceirw Nant Conwy from the age of 12. "It's a really strong girls hub," explains Branwen, "so that just developed us." "How far we've come now," adds Nel, "to think we're playing for Wales, is just incredible." Naturally, as you'd expect, both sisters are equally proud of each other's achievements. "Words can't even describe how proud I am," says Nel. "I've watched her work so hard, coming back from an ACL injury not too long ago. "I think she fully deserves to be here. She's worked so hard so I'm super proud of her." Despite impressing for Wales U20s this summer, leading the age-grade side in the U20s Six Nations Summer Series, the call-up for the World Cup still came as a surprise to Branwen. "I hoped (it might happen)," she says. "It was in the back of my head. "But I was trying not to get ahead of myself. One day at a time. "And then I got the phone call which was great. I was at home with my sisters. It was quite a special moment for us as I was quote shocked." Her slightly older sister offers up a slightly more detailed account of how Branwen reacted to her World Cup call-up. "Big scream and then she came running down the corridor," says Nel. "It was us and our younger sister. "We all just started hugging and jumping up and down. It was really special." For Nel, the World Cup offers an opportunity for the Gloucester-Hartpury full-back to build upon her two-try salvo in the historic win over Australia in Brisbane last month. The fixture at Ballymore was Wales' first away Test against Australia, with the 21-12 win handing Lynn his first victory as Wales coach. "That first game was an unbelievable experience," says Nel. "We just clicked as a team and scoring two tries is incredible. "I think we showed in that game what we can do. As a backline, we lit up. Hopefully we can do that in the World Cup. It was good we could score a few tries in Australia. As for Branwen, there's the prospect of a Wales debut in the World Cup - with all eyes on the crucial clash with Scotland on August 23. "It would be quite an experience," she says. "It's always been something I've dreamed of. "I've worked hard so hopefully I can have the opportunity." Article continues below Whatever happens, a small corner of north Wales is already mightily proud.

Docherty confident Crichton can lead Rangers' SWPL title charge
Jo Potter's switch to Crystal Palace opened the door to Crichton's move to Rangers from Glasgow City little over a fortnight ago. And while she has had little time to get her feet under the desk, Docherty expects that her former team-mate at Glasgow City and Scotland has the ability to make Rangers ruthless. The Ibrox side have lost out on the title on the final day of the campaign for the last three successive seasons, something that has rankled with Docherty. 'I have know Leanne for a long time,' she said. 'We played together and I know that she is a winner. She is coming here to win things and make sure that we are going into games with the right approach. 'That isn't just one off games or the big games but making sure we are turning up week in, week out. There is pressure when you play at a club like Rangers but that pressure is because we want to be winners. Read more: 'That is the message that Leanne will get through. I think we have all had time to process it now but not winning the league but it was tough. We have to use it as fuel this season. 'We have come very close but obviously we want to go and cross that line and I think it means being consistent across the board. 'We were switched on last season in terms of goals and the possibility of the title going to goal difference but we fell short in certain moments. 'That's what has to change.' Meanwhile, Hibs striker Eilidh Adams has accepted that Grant Scott's side will find this season a different challenge again as they look to defend a title that few expected them to claim. They host Aberdeen at Meadowbank this afternoon with the striker determined that the Hibees can buck expectations again. 'It was incredible for us and if we were all being honest I think we would say that even we didn't think we would go all the way and win the league,' said the striker. 'But having achieved it was just an amazing moment for us. It took a long time for it to actually sink in that we had done it but having had a taste of it we want more success now. 'We know that teams will write us off again this season but we feel that we have been over the course now and we are determined to go and challenge again. 'It is difficult – you can see that across recent years as teams have struggled to defend the title – but we are excited rather than intimidated by that. We are champions and with that comes a bit of pressure.' Celtic had a season to forget last term as they finished fourth. There has been chaos behind the scenes this summer with ten departures and only two arrivals to date. They are away to Hearts today with Chloe Craig, who missed the season with an ACL, accepting that last term wasn't good enough. 'On a personal level it was obviously tough but in terms of the team, just having to watch and not be able to influence was really challenging. 'We know what it is like to win silverware and titles so we are determined to be back in amongst it this season.' Emma Brownlie has swapped Hearts for Glasgow City and is excited to make her mark at Petershill. City have endured back-to-back seasons with no silverware, something they are out to arrest this term. '100% we believe we are going out to try and be as successful as we possibly can be,' said she said. 'I am excited to get started here at City and I feel that everyone is ready to go and challenge for the title.'
