Douglas' Rojas, Aquinas' Malvasio are Broward 7A-5A Baseball Players of the Year

Miami Herald11-06-2025
Stoneman Douglas' Giovanni Rojas put together one of the most dominant pitching seasons in recent history.
St. Thomas Aquinas' Zachary Malvasio spearheaded one of the best hitting seasons for a team in county history, led by his own remarkable senior campaign.
Their efforts helped lead their respective teams to state championships.
Rojas, a junior, is therefore the Miami Herald's Broward County Baseball Pitcher of the Year for Classes 7A-5A.
And Malvasio, a power-hitting outfielder, is the Broward 7A-5A Baseball Player of the Year.
Rojas, a University of Miami commit, helped Douglas make history as the first team in Florida to win five consecutive state championships.
At a school already rich in tradition when it comes to dominant pitchers, Rojas stood out.
A 6-4, 190-pound lefty, Rojas was nearly unhittable at times, going 12-0 with 120 strikeouts and only 16 walks in 68 innings and compiling an 0.72 ERA.
Rojas' performances often helped Douglas navigate through tough stretches of the regular season as the Eagles found their footing and put together another impressive march to a championship.
'It's a once in a lifetime chance you get to do that. It's a feeling you can't re-create,' Rojas said about being part of a historic state title streak. 'It's only in that moment that you can experience something like that.'
Rojas worked his way back from an arm injury, which kept him from pitching during his sophomore season. But this year, even as he hit .375 with two home runs, eight doubles and 32 RBI, Rojas didn't miss a beat on the mound. Rojas threw a no-hitter against Flanagan and had four more one-hitters and three more games allowing two hits. The future potential early MLB Draft pick is committed to continuing to develop his game.
'I really work on my focus on the mound and try to stay consistent with it whether I'm in the bullpen, or playing catch, I just try to keep everything consistent,' Rojas said. 'This offseason, I'll be working more, trying to improve off this past season.'
The same can be said for Malvasio, who is itching to get to Orlando and join UCF where he will play his college ball this fall.
Malvasio hit .414 this season and a staggering 16 home runs as the key cog in a prolific Aquinas lineup, which hit 68 home runs overall.
'One of my favorite parts about this year was that up and down our lineup, we had studs,' Malvasio said. 'If one didn't get it done, the other did. I always got four or five at-bats per game and that's how you knew we were always scoring runs.'
Malvasio wasn't just about power at the plate, though. His consistent bat also produced 16 doubles and 48 RBI overall.
'It all started with the work in the offseason, in the weight room, outside of practice,' Malvasio said. 'I just had the discipline to keep going.'
Malvasio's efforts helped the Raiders secure their first state championship since 2018 and the program's fourth overall.
'It was an incredible ride from the start in the fall. To have that core returning, we all pushed each other and had the focus of winning a state title,' Malvasio said. 'We took it all pitch by pitch, game by game and stuck to the fundamentals and our team chemistry was off the charts. Everybody was together and wanted to win.'

Sign Up Now Luis Rojas has known Pete Alonso throughout the slugger's career, from their time together in the Mets minor league system to two seasons as his big league manager in Queens in 2020-21. Now the Yankees third base coach, Rojas says he 'couldn't be happier' for Alonso after the All-Star first baseman set the Mets all-time record for home runs Tuesday night against the Braves. Advertisement 'What I noticed was that Pete had the same face going around the bases as I saw as a minor leaguer all those years ago. Just pure joy and love for baseball,' Rojas told The Post outside the Yankees dugout before Wednesday's series finale against the Twins. 'He enjoys the game at all times. We all knew in the minor leagues that his power was gonna play in the big leagues, and he worked so hard to become a better defensive player, too. 'To see him do this, it just takes me back to watching his development. I always loved to be around Pete, everyone did. And I am so happy for him. It's a tremendous accomplishment.'

He refused to wait his turn. Now Aquinas' Fitzpatrick is one of nation's best

Justice Fitzpatrick arrived at St. Thomas Aquinas in 2022 with high—but still measured—expectations about how his freshman season in Fort Lauderdale would go. He heeded warnings before he enrolled about how hard it was for freshmen to get on the field and was ready to be patient if he needed to be. At the same time, Fitzpatrick had no plan to wait his turn. 'I chose myself to be the one to step up,' said Fitzpatrick, now a senior, a three-time state champion and one of the best players in all of Florida. Fitzpatrick originally planned to keep playing wide receiver for the Raiders, but he saw a need in the secondary and stepped up. He was ready to be patient, but played so well that St. Thomas Aquinas couldn't keep him off of the field. He was always pegged as a potential future star, but his play as a freshman quickly solidified him as something truly special. Now, Fitzpatrick is a top-50 prospect in the Class of 2026, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, and the highest ranked pure defender in South Florida for the 2026 recruiting class. The four-star cornerback—and younger brother of star Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick—orally committed to Georgia in June and boasts more than 40 scholarship offers, with Miami, Florida and Texas all still pushing to flip Fitzpatrick's commitment away from the Bulldogs. As he gets set to begin his senior season with the Raiders, Fitzpatrick has a chance to finish off a historic career by guiding St. Thomas Aquinas to a record seventh straight state title and doing it as the undisputed leader of the state's most storied program. 'It's definitely been great,' said Fitzpatrick, who relocated with his family to the Miami metropolitan area after the Dolphins picked his older brother in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. 'I haven't had the traditional experience, I guess you'd say.' Playing for the Raiders, especially as an underclassmen, is different than playing at most other high schools. In any given season, St. Thomas Aquinas will feature at least a dozen future FBS-level players in their starting lineup - there just isn't room for most freshmen and sophomores to get significant playing time, even if those freshmen and sophomores are future D-I players, too. Fitzpatrick knew this—and embraced it. He quickly realized he wouldn't get on to the field as a receiver, but saw openings in the secondary. Finally, he decided to make the shift and the Raiders rewarded him—Fitzpatrick never played a single game on junior varsity. Although playing time was sporadic as a freshman, Fitzpatrick still made a mark. In the Class 3M championship, Fitzpatrick grabbed his first interception and helped St. Thomas Aquinas beat Homestead for a fourth straight state title. 'First play of the game, they saw me, a little freshman,' the 6-foot-1, 185-pound corner said. 'They tried to throw it deep.' Since then, Fitzpatrick has consistently been one of the best defensive backs in the country, earning first-team Junior All-American honors from MaxPreps last season. His final season with the Raiders could be his best yet, with his older brother now just a short drive away after he returned to the Dolphins in the offseason. Fitzpatrick has always leaned on his brother, despite the roughly 10-year age gap between the two. When Minkah was playing in high school in New Jersey and going through his recruitment, Justice got a front-row seat to learn what the process would be like. When Minkah landed with the Dolphins and the family moved to the Miami metro area, Justice got to lean on his older brother for advice and some coaching, just as he was starting to figure himself out as a football player, too. After the Dolphins traded Minkah to the Steelers in 2019, Justice had to save his training seasons with his older brother for the offseason, and move all their conversations to phone calls and FaceTime's. No more. With his brother's help and three years of championship experience already behind him, Fitzpatrick is ready to be even better in his final year of high school. 'NFL players, they've got a lot of weight on them. I've got a lot of weight on me,' Fitzpatrick said. 'It's a lot easier to talk to someone face to face.'

Latest 53-man roster projection for Patriots has team keeping seven wide receivers

If you had to name the most disappointing position group on the Patriots last year, it would be easy to pick the wide receivers. The team picked Ja'Lynn Polk in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft and grabbed Javon Baker in the fourth round. However, neither player contributed as a rookie and the duo combined for just 13 catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. DeMario Douglas ended up leading all wide receivers in catches and yards with 66 for 621. This offseason, the team invested heavily to improve the position. Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins were added in free agency, while Kyle Williams was drafted in the third round of the 2025 draft. As a result, what was once a weakness may now be the team's deepest position group. One can assume that Diggs, Hollins, Douglas, and Williams are safe. Considering most teams keep six receivers, that means Polk, Baker, Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne, and Efton Chism III, among others, could be competing for just two spots. Nicole Yang of the Boston Globe, however, believes the Patriots will be forced to keep seven receivers on the final roster. In Yang's updated final roster prediction, Boutte, Baker, and Polk all make it, while Bourne and Chism are left out. Regarding this deep group, Yang offered the following: If the Patriots only want to keep five receivers, the group will be Diggs, Douglas, Boutte, Hollins, and Williams. If the team wants to keep six, Baker right now could have the edge over Polk because of his upward trajectory during practice. The Patriots could elect to keep seven, though, making room for both 2024 draft picks and giving them one last opportunity to bounce back under a new coaching staff. The preseason games could strongly influence this decision. As Yang mentioned, if the team only keeps five, it seems like Boutte will get the final spot after his solid summer. If six are kept, Baker likely has the edge over Polk. However, keeping all seven could be intriguing due to the potential upside and youth of the group. Either way, it seems like the veteran Bourne is in serious jeopardy of making the team. Bourne has been with the Patriots since 2021, but he may be redundant now with Douglas and Williams having much better summers.
