Hat-trick key for Topp thriller

A hat-trick of tries from mobile lock Dean Sinnamon led Central Region to a thrilling 41-38 victory over Southern Region in a highly entertaining contest for the much-treasured Topp Cup at Molyneux Park on Saturday.
Lock Sinnamon, already the leading try scorer in the Central Otago club competition this season, remarkable enough for a team that is bottom of the competition, romped away with the man of the match award, controlling the lineout as well as proving a champion finisher.
He was one of three players who dominated the scoring.
Central second five Rube Peina goal-kicked impeccably, converting all five of his team's tries and adding two penalty goals for a 16-point haul while Southern Region fullback Jared Hayes finished with 18 points from a try, five conversions and a penalty goal.
Remarkably, only one kick at goal, an attempt by Peina from near halfway, missed.
Southern, holders of the Topp Cup, led only once in the game, at 14-10, and appeared down and out when trailing 31-41 with 12 minutes remaining.
But a daring 'hail Mary' pass from the Central backs, full of confidence as they sought another five-pointer, was intercepted by Southern winger Junior Meafua, who sprinted 80m for a try between the posts.
Suddenly the game was wide open and when Southern surged back to the 22, it seemed they might steal an outrageous victory.
But Central's defence was up to the challenge and the Topp Cup went to the team that, across 80 minutes, produced the classier rugby.
Besides Sinnamon and Peina, Central's star performers were the Alexandra pair of lock Will Healey and halfback ''Chugga'' O'Neill, flanker Anton Huisman, centre and captain Tyler Ford and flying wingers Jamie Natapu and Conor Hamlin.
Cromwell's Rhys Harrold, a late replacement for Ben Maxwell, ran the backline expertly from first-five.
Southern fullback Hayes, a star of his team's victory in 2024, threatened to win the game on his own but found the challenge just too great.
Halfback Sam Stratford contributed plenty and scored two tries while lock Damian Wilson ensured his team had ample ball to work with.
But although there was only three points separating the sides at the final whistle, Central triumphed as the superior attacking team.
In the curtainraisers, Central won the men's development contest 21-14 while the women's game went to Alhambra Union 26-21 over the Central Otago Does.

Wynne recuperating

Southern horsewoman Samantha Wynne is recuperating in Christchurch Hospital after sustaining serious head injuries on Saturday morning. The 36-year-old had taken a team of horses to Riccarton on Saturday but cannot recall anything further after she was kicked in the head by a horse and taken to hospital where she underwent surgery for a fractured skull and badly damaged ear. "I got my ear sewed back on, they removed fragments out of the fractures and pulled a bone out of my head. They had to make sure I had no brain injuries, and I'm very lucky that I don't think I have. There is just a lot of swelling, but hopefully that will go down and the fracture will heal." — NZ Racing Desk

Central Otago team of the season

Bob Howitt names a team of the season from the Central Otago premier club competition. 15 Henry Schikker (Upper Clutha) The brand of fullback every coach wants — speedy, enterprising and a reliable tackler. 14 Conner Hamlin (Wakatipu) Possessed of blistering speed. Lightly built but fearless under the high ball. Missed the final with a serious rib injury but still finished with eight tries. 13 Tyler Ford (Alexandra) Class act at centre who guided Alex through to the semifinals again. Scored 116 points. Captained Central to a stirring victory in the Topp Cup contest. 12 Rube Peina (Wakatipu) Inspirational captain who scored 129 points, including all 23 in one contest, and contributed massively to Central's Topp Cup triumph. 11 Jack East (Upper Clutha) After three seasons playing in Victoria, Canada, took possession of the No14 jersey mid-season after a string of injuries. Scored four tries on debut and another couple of crackers in the final. 10 Ben Maxwell (Maniototo) Debut season for the Maggots after a decade starring for Cromwell. His goalkicking and general experience helped Maniototo qualify for the semifinals. 9 Ryan O'Neill (Alexandra) Tough performer whose slick passing helped Alex qualify for the semifinals. A star of the Topp Cup victory. 8 Jake Burtenshaw (Upper Clutha) Nothing between him and Wakatipu adversary Anton Huisman, but a cracking display in the final, including a try, gives it to Burtenshaw again. 7 Sam Chapman (Alexandra) Rare for a loose forward to finish the season as top try-scorer, but he managed it with 12 touchdowns. Sensational in the semifinal clash against Wakatipu. 6 Lachie Carrick (Upper Clutha) Another man-of-the-match performance against Wakatipu in the final. In a class of his own in the lineouts. 5 Dean Sinnamon (Matakanui Combined) Played most of the season as a loose forward for his club, but turned in a man-of-the-match display from lock in the Topp Cup contest. Grabbed three tries there and 11 for his club. Named Central Otago's player of the season. 4 Andrew Horne (Upper Clutha) If it wasn't Carrick stealing opponents' lineout ball on a regular basis, it was Horne. He's off to Scotland for a holiday, meaning he will miss the Otago Country matches. 3 William Holdom (Alexandra) A player with a huge engine and plenty of rugby nous. Played all 13 games for the Armadillos and starred in the Topp Cup win. 2 Scott Cunningham (Upper Clutha) Chalked up his 100th appearance in the semifinal against Maniototo and contributed plenty in the final. 1 Mike Philip (Matakanui Combined) Major contributor, along with Sinnamon, in Matakanui Combined's strong revival throughout the season. Deservedly won Topp Cup selection. Reserves: Jamie Natapu (Wakatipu), Rhys Harrold (Cromwell), Oliver Stirling (Upper Clutha), Anton Huisman (Wakatipu), Will Healey (Alexandra), Blair Kennedy (Upper Clutha), Alex Chubb (Cromwell).

New coach to get eyes on squad in preseason clash

New Otago coach Mark Brown will have a bunch of fresh faces to analyse when he makes his debut in the role this afternoon. A preseason clash with Southland at the University Oval will be Brown's only meaningful opportunity to assess his squad before the rivals clash again in the NPC opener on Stag Day in Invercargill on August 2. He has named both his new imports, Fijian Drua lock Joseva Tamani and English winger Charlie Powell, in the Otago starting XV. Tamani is joined at lock by Taieri beanpole Eric Peita, who is not in the NPC but gets an opportunity to show what he can do if a spare lock, as expected, is needed at some stage. Zingari-Richmond hooker A-One Lolofie will make his debut and is joined by young Highlanders prop Rohan Wingham and Ben Lopas. With Christian Lio-Willie in camp with the All Blacks, rising Southern No8 Konrad Toleafoa starts at the back of the scrum with clubmate Harry Taylor at openside and Highlanders rookie Will Stodart at blindside. Bob Martin plugged away for Taieri for some time without cracking the Otago squad but he will start at halfback with Nathan Hastie on deck for Harbour in the Dunedin club final and Dylan Pledger preparing for the world under-20 final with the Baby Blacks. Outside him, the versatile Sam Gilbert will start at first five, and there is a powerful midfield in the form of Thomas Umaga-Jensen and Josh Timu. A very new outside back combination has Powell, who played for Southland last year, joined by Dunedin winger Kyan Rangitutia and exciting Green Island fullback Sam Nemec-Vial. The reserves bench includes mostly well-performed club players including rising flanker Max Ratcliffe, Southern spark Mackenzie Palmer and Green Island's MacEwan brothers, Heath and Christian. An unexpected addition is Jae Broomfield, the New Zealand Universities vice-captain who has come south to try his luck after struggling to break into the Canterbury squad. Henry Bell and Lucas Casey are on duty for Kaikorai in the club final, Finn Hurley, Jona Nareki, Oliver Haig, Jake Te Hiwi and Josh Whaanga are injured, and leading first five Cameron Millar is not being risked as he has a minor niggle. The Stags have named former Otago utility Sam Fischli at openside, and Irish recruit Cian Hurley. Highlanders winger Michael Manson features in a talented backline that features former Highlander Scott Gregory, back from Italy, and a fine midfield combination of Matt Whaanga and Isaac Te Tamaki.
