Three new principals approved by Urbana School District 116
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana School District 116 will welcome three new employees in principal positions this July.
Parkland College welding lab evacuated due to smoke
Tuesday evening, the school district's Board of Education unanimously approved the employment of the following administrators for the 2025-26 school year:
Sean Smith
Assistant Principal at Urbana High School effective July 1, 2025 (replacing Melissa Kearns)
Derek Ely
Associate Principal at Urbana Middle School effective July 1, 2025 (replacing Imani Carr)
Lidiya Wang
Principal, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School tentatively effective July 23, 2025, pending approval of the 2025-26 school year calendar (replacing Michelle Turner)
Smith graduated from Urbana High School in 2010 and started his career in education as a paraprofessional at Jefferson Middle School in 2017. He earned a master's degree in special education and transitioned to Edison Middle School as a special education teacher in 2019.
In 2023, Smith became the Dean of Students and Athletic Director at Edison. He then began his role as Associate Principal there and earned a master's degree in educational leadership in 2024.
AgTech Week underway in Champaign-Urbana
Ely currently serves as an Assistant Principal at Champaign Central High School. He previously served as the Dean of Students at Champaign Central and as a physical education and health teacher at the READY Program school in Champaign.
Wang previously served as the Principal of the Pavilion Foundation School for three years. Before that, she was an Assistant Principal at Circle Academy in Urbana.

Chatham 5K proceeds to be donated in crash victim's honor
CHATHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — Proceeds from this year's Chatham Jaycees Sweetcorn Festival 5K will be donated in honor of Bradley Lund, who died on Monday as a result of the April crash into the YNOT after school camp. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Chatham Jaycees said that all of the proceeds from this year's run/walk will be donated to The Backyard at the Library in honor of 8-year-old Bradley Lund and the Lund Family. Lund was the fifth child who died as a result of the crash. Dana-Thomas House Foundation donates $50k for historic Springfield site restoration 'Words cannot express what the Lund family means to our community, our kids, and our organization,' Chatham Jaycees said in its post. They are also strongly encouraging people to register early so that they can order shirts and medals for all the participants. Additionally, Chatham Jaycees has extended the $5 registration discount through June 12. There is also going to be an option to make additional donations on the race's website. The event is family friendly, so participants can run, walk or even push strollers during the race. The 50th annual Sweetcorn Festival 5K will take place from 8-10 a.m. on July 19 at 700 S Main St. Registration ends at 11:59 p.m. on July 15. 'We can't wait to see you in July,' Chatham Jaycees said. Decatur man accused of possessing child sex abuse material
DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A Decatur man is facing charges of possessing child pornography after police accused him of uploading images of child sex abuse to his Microsoft OneDrive account and having images showing a young girl's rape. Kevin Horve is facing three counts of possessing pornographic content depicting someone 13 years or younger. He was arrested on Tuesday and made his first appearance in court the following day. In a sworn statement, Decatur Police Officer Timothy Wisniewski said the investigation into Horve started in February, when the Decatur Police Department received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Wisniewski was assigned to investigate the tip. Champaign man gets probation after pleading guilty to child pornography possession The tip was originally reported by Microsoft, which flagged 11 images that were uploaded to an account of its OneDrive platform. Wisniewski said at least four of the images depicted naked girls under the age of 13. Further investigation found 84 more images in the account's records; none of the original images were among the new photos found, but Wisniewski said another four depicted naked girls. The OneDrive account was registered to Horve, Wisniewski said, and the IP address listed with each file was registered to a Comcast account with Horve named as the subscriber. The address was geolocated to an address on Greenhill Road. Detectives served a search warrant for that address on Tuesday, and Horve was the only person present when the warrant was executed. Wisniewski said that during an interview with officers, Horve confirmed his Internet provider is Comcast and that he is the only user of the electronic devices officers seized. As the interview continued, Wisniewski said Horve explained that he had previously experimented with AI programs to create images of celebrities. 'Kevin was asked in the images were sexual images,' Wisniewski said in the statement. 'Kevin responded, 'Well yeah, obviously' and explained he was trying to create images of celebrities.' Decatur woman convicted of child porn sentenced after six-month delay Horve said he used the AI for a few months until Microsoft gave him a warning that stated he was creating content depicting people who were too young. He then deleted his Microsoft360 account after the warning. Wisniewski did not explain the connection between the AI content and the real content Horve is accused of possessing, and the charges he is facing don't reflect AI-generated pornography. They do reflect the three images that were found on one of the seized laptops. In all three of those images, a girl under the age of 13 is shown engaging in sexual intercourse. Appearing in court on Tuesday, Judge Lindsey Shelton granted a petition by the State's Attorney's Office to detain Horve ahead of his trial. Monticello students build bike racks for park named after fallen Marine
MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — Some high school students are honoring a fallen Marine by making some new bike racks for the park that bears his name. PFC Robert C. Burke Memorial Park in Monticello was named in honor of a local teen who enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. At the age of 18, Burke was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the firefight that resulted in his death. Movie filmed in Monticello brings Hollywood close to home The new bike racks are being made by students at Monticello High School, and they are themed around Burke. One rack features a metal sign bearing his name. Another rack's sign reads '327th Marines' — the regiment Burke served in. The teacher who led the project said this was one design he didn't want to miss. 'I love doing projects for the community,' Ryan Woodham said. 'My students really get involved and get excited about it because it's something they can take pride in. It's something they can drive around and show their parents and their friends that they were involved in it.' The bike racks are waiting to be painted.
