Springs arm wrestlers bring home medals from African Championships in Nigeria

The Citizena day ago
Three arm wrestlers from Springs represented the country at the 14th Africa Championships 2025 in Abuja, Nigeria, from July 23 to 27.
Arm wrestlers from 15 African countries participated, with South Africa taking seventh place. Janco Kok, Johnny Meyer and Rosemary Botha collected medals in various categories in the tournament.
Speaking to Springs Advertiser, Botha said she was proud of herself and her teammates. She said she was honoured to represent her town, province and the country. Her biggest stand-out moment was competing against the Master Women World Champion.
'I cannot do this sport without the support of my work, my friends and my family. Our national federation, led by president Yorinda Nel, has been extremely supportive and was part of the reason I could attend this event,' said Botha.
Botha participated in the Master Women U80kg left and right arms category, where she won a bronze medal. Although she competed internationally, she spoke about the challenges faced by herself and others.
'One of the biggest challenges is to get funding and to prove that arm wrestling is a real sport that requires more financial support,' she said.
Botha said she aimed to become a full-time coach, serve as a referee at the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, and represent South Africa at the African Games in Egypt in 2027.
Meyer participated in the master men's 110kg right-arm category, where he won the silver medal. Kok is the new African champion after he won the gold medal in the youth men's 110kg left and right arms.

Ngannou's no-shows at PFL Africa events leave fans and officials disappointed

Francis Ngannou has yet to explain his absence from PFL Africa's first two events despite serving as the promotion's chairman. Photo: PFL Image: Suuplied African MMA fans were left outraged and puzzled by the absence of heavyweight superstar Francis Ngannou at both recent PFL Africa events in South Africa. The PFL announced the launch of PFL Africa last year as part of its global expansion plan, generating huge excitement within the continent's combat sport communities. The promotion is ranked among the top two MMA organisations in the world, and Ngannou — a former UFC heavyweight champion — was confirmed as an equity owner and chairman of the African branch. PFL Africa aims to showcase the continent's top talent, with champions earning a pathway to the PFL Global season. The project was inspired in part by Ngannou's own extraordinary journey, which saw him endure hardship and danger while travelling across Africa and Europe before finding success in professional MMA. Following the inaugural PFL Africa event in Cape Town, PFL founder Donn Davis addressed Ngannou's absence when questioned by Independent Media. 'You'll have to ask Francis that,' Davis said. 'I am disappointed that he is not here; this was part of his vision, and we are here because of him. I expected him to be here. PFL Africa is here so that all those fighters out there don't have to leave the continent like he did. 'We worked for two years on this together, for this moment tonight, to help realise this vision. I would have loved him to be here… I am disappointed that he is not here,' Davis added. The Cape Town show featured bantamweights and heavyweights competing for a place in the PFL Africa 2025 tournament finals later this year. Video Player is loading. Stars such as Nigeria's Patrick Ocheme and Angola's Shido Boris Esperança impressed, but fans were again left disappointed by Ngannou's absence. Ngannou signed a two-fight deal with the PFL after leaving the UFC, committing to MMA bouts exclusively in the PFL's PPV Super Fight Division alongside fellow stars Jake Paul and Kayla Harrison. He made his debut in the division last year, stopping Brazil's Renan Ferreira in Saudi Arabia. His contract also allows him to compete in other combat sports. Ngannou has previously boxed against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and is reportedly pursuing further big-money bouts. Boxing promoter and Saudi General Entertainment Authority chief Turki Alalshikh is exploring match-ups for Ngannou, including a possible clash with Deontay Wilder and even a bout with recently retired UFC legend Jon Jones. Independent Media has reached out to Ngannou for comment, but the Cameroonian fighter has yet to respond. He recently posted images of himself doing boxing drills with coach Dewey Cooper, further fuelling speculation about his next move.

Unorthodox Patrick Ocheme offers high praise for Mohamed Camara after PFL Joburg

Patrick Ocheme (7-1) defeated Mohamed Camara (5-3-1) via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28) in the main event of PFL Africa this past weekend. Picture: PFLAfrica Image: PFLAfrica Nigeria's Featherweight star Patrick Ocheme (7-1) showcased his maturity and composure against the resilient Mohamed Camara (5-3-1) in the inaugural PFL Africa Tournament this past weekend. Following an absolute humdinger show in Cape Town last month, the PFL rolled out its second PFL Africa show at Big Top, Carnival City in Johannesburg on Saturday where the Feather and Welterweight athletes got their turn to compete for a spot in the Tournament Finals, that will see the promotion crown its first African champions in Benin at the end of the year. In the main event, Ocheme and Guinea's Camara put on a show befitting of a headliner as these two warriors went toe-to-toe for three rounds. Ocheme eventually walked away victorious via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28) after dominating the exchanges on all fronts. The South African-based Ocheme gave the Joburg crowd a taste of his dynamic and unorthodox style, producing an array of strikes that mixed beautiful elbows, switch kicks, and knees. Next Stay Close ✕ Ocheme's Decisive Moment: A Lethal Knee and Elbows Overwhelm Camara in the Second Round In the second round, Ocheme delivered a beautifully timed teep kick to the midsection of Camara, before the latter unleashed some powerful bombs, including a telling left to the head of Ocheme. The Nigerian stayed on point with his reads and timing, and in one decisive moment, he launched with a lethal knee to Camara's body that dropped the Guinean. At that moment, the crowd thought the fight was over as Ocheme overwhelmed the grounded Camara with elbows as the referee kept a beady eye on the situation. 'I thought he was going to quit at that point, but he is an absolute warrior. He earned my respect in there today. When the referee said 'move or defend yourself', he said, 'I am still fine'. 'But I could also see that he was still in there,' said Ocheme of Camara. It has to be said, Mohamed Camara's conditioning is something to admire and strive toward. The man was in impeccable shape and showcased some of the best cardio and control in mixed martial arts, always coming forward with balanced breathing. Camara's Resilience and Ocheme's Triumph in the PFL Africa Featherweight Tournament Even after the adversity faced in the second round, Camara stepped up to the plate in the final five minutes and lifted his tactical game with good head movement, a strong jab, and counters, all from the base of a solid tank. This fight was a textbook example for upcoming athletes and proved yet again that a good gas tank plays an imperative role. In the end, Ocheme remained the sharper athlete with more accuracy, a higher volume, and a higher work rate. 'I never panicked, at any point in the fight,' says Ocheme when asked about the pressure and durability of Camara. 'When my coaches (like Dwain Meredith) are pleased with my preparation in fight camp, then I am happy and confident, regardless of anything. This is the fight game; the wheel can turn at any point, but I always stay positive.' Ocheme, who has been training out of Pandamonium Gym in Johannesburg, South Africa, will now advance to the semi-final of the PFL Africa Featherweight tournament and will face Burkino Faso-born Abdoul Razac Sankara next. While he has recently made South Africa his home, Ocheme still enjoys strong ties with his place of birth and is proud to fly the vertical triband. 'Maybe someday in the future, I would love to represent South Africa as well, but I was born and brought up in Nigeria. I am very proud of my national colours and I have a lot of support from my people back home, from all the kickboxing and MMA gyms and institutions, as well as the athletes. I'm very honored to be representing my country and my gym. It's all the same for me, it's about representing my family and friends.'

Orlando Pirates v Mamelodi Sundowns: MTN8, Date, Kick-Off Time, TV Channel

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will meet for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon in the MTN8. The two giants of South African football will play in the MTN8 first leg of the MTN8 semi-finals. Both teams eased into the semis with wins over Polokwane City and Richards Bay, respectively. The Buccaneers edged out Rise and Shine 2-0 earlier this month, while Downs made light work of the Natal Rich Boys with a 4-0 victory. This past weekend, Both Downs and Bucs failed to win their opening league fixtures, with some fans speculating that the teams already have their eyes on the MTN8 semi-final clash. The anticipated MTN8 clash will take place at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday (16 August) at 15:00. The match will be televised on SABC 1 and also on SuperSport channels. The last time the two teams met was earlier this year at the FNB Stadium, where Pirates defeated Downs 2-1 in a league match. In 2023, the two African giants met in the MTN8 final and it was Pirates who emerged victorious over Sundowns after a penalty shootout. Having won the competition three times in a row, the Buccaneers are once again favourites even against the best side in the league. Masandawana have only won the MTN8 once in the past 17 years and will look to reach their sixth final in three years. The second leg of the MTN8 match between Pirates and Sundowns will be played in Pretoria; however, the PSL are yet to announce the date, but it might be towards the end of the month.
