In a major development for higher education in the US, the Department of Education has rescinded a $37.7 million fine previously levied against
Grand Canyon University
(GCU), the nation's largest
Christian university
. The decision was made official through a Joint Stipulation of Dismissal issued by the Office of Hearings and Appeals, which concluded that there were no findings against GCU or its employees, and no fine would be imposed.
The fine was originally described as the largest in the department's history. GCU announced the outcome through a press release, stating that the ruling fully cleared the institution of any wrongdoing and closed a years-long legal dispute with the federal agency.
Background of the record-breaking fine
The Department of Education had accused GCU of misleading more than 7,500 students regarding the actual cost of its doctoral programs.
According to the agency, the university advertised tuition ranges between $40,000 and $49,000, though fewer than 2% of graduates completed their programs within that price range. The department cited additional required 'continuation courses' as a factor that pushed costs higher, often by $10,000 to $12,000.
GCU strongly denied the allegations, maintaining that it clearly disclosed all tuition-related information. GCU President
Brian Mueller
, as quoted by Christian Post, stated, 'The facts clearly support our contention that we were wrongly accused of misleading our Doctoral students and we appreciate the recognition that those accusations were without merit.'
Claims of bias against Christian institutions
M
ueller has previously argued that the fine was part of a larger pattern of unfair targeting of Christian universities by federal agencies. In comments reported by Christian Post, he noted that GCU has been widely recognized for transparency, saying, 'We give the cost of the entire program to students up front at all three levels — bachelor's, master's and doctoral.'
He also highlighted discrepancies in penalties against institutions, pointing out that the fines imposed on GCU and another Christian university dwarfed penalties issued to major public universities involved in high-profile abuse scandals.
According to data cited by the American Principles Project, Christian colleges — though they serve fewer than 10% of US students — account for about 70% of the enforcement actions by the Department's Office of Enforcement.
The average fine against Christian schools was reported to be significantly higher than that for non-religious institutions.
GCU faces additional scrutiny
Following the original fine, GCU was also targeted by a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit and an audit by the Department of Veterans Affairs. As reported by Christian Post, the lawsuit was later dismissed by the US District Court of Arizona, which ruled that the FTC lacked jurisdiction over GCU.
A department spokesperson, quoted by Christian Post, contrasted the current administration's approach with that of the previous one, stating that the Trump administration would not target institutions based on religious affiliation, and enforcement would be based strictly on facts and fairness.
Founded by the Southern Baptist Convention, GCU transitioned to a for-profit model amid financial challenges and has since become the largest Christian university in the country by enrollment. The university continues to position itself as a leader in transparency and innovation in higher education.

The Trump-Elon Feud Timeline: Best Buddies Broadcast Their Breakup

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. A public feud erupts between President Trump and Elon Musk over a tax bill, featuring insults and threats on social media. Musk criticises Trump's policies, while Trump threatens to cut Musk's federal contracts, causing Tesla shares to plummet 14%. The breakup between the world's most powerful politician and the world's richest man is playing out in a manner befitting an era of hyperreality: with stunning speed, wild recriminations, and in public via television and their own social media platforms. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who just last week stood together in the Oval Office to proclaim their lasting friendship, traded barbs and insults in real time on Thursday. Proclamations of sadness, ingratitude and disappointment by the men soon devolved into an exchange of threats. The rift had been widening since Musk on Tuesday broadcast his opposition to Trump's signature tax and spending bill, which the chief executive of Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. labeled a "disgusting abomination" sure to wreck the nation's finances. By mid-afternoon Thursday, Musk was posting on his X platform that Trump would never have won back the White House without his help. Trump called the billionaire "crazy" and threatened to cancel his companies' federal contracts. Musk shot back, pledging to decommission the all-important Dragon spacecraft that underpins the International Space Station. Tesla shares plunged. Musk kicked off his X activity on Thursday with a repost of the Christian news satire site The Babylon Bee, which had a "story" addressing the bill. The headline: Congress Warns Failure to Pass Spending Bill Might Delay Destruction of the Country The billionaire made a direct swipe at the president, reposting a 2013 tweet from Trump criticizing Republicans for raising the debt ceiling. "Wise words," Musk said. Trump soon began remarks from an Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Musk reposted another Trump missive from the past, this one from 2012 saying no member of Congress should be reelected if the US budget isn't balanced. Around noon, Trump started addressing Musk's criticism. "Elon is upset because we took the EV mandate, and you know, which was a lot of money for electric vehicles," he said. "They're having a hard time the electric vehicles and they want us to pay billions of dollars in subsidies. And, you know, Elon knew this from the beginning." He went on to say Musk knew the inner workings of the bill. He said he and Musk had a great relationship - but that may be over. "I'm very disappointed in Elon," he said. "I've helped Elon a lot." All the while, Merz sat quietly by before the conversation moved on to discussion of topics such as Ukraine and Russia. Musk took a break from his criticism to praise the president's decision to cut funding for California high-speed rail, calling it a sensible move. But eight minutes later, Musk appeared to respond in real time to Trump's claims about the EV mandate: "Whatever." The Tesla CEO said he'd be fine for the EV cuts to stay in the bill, but noted that oil and gas subsidies weren't touched (which was "very unfair!!"). He also criticized the amount of "pork" in the legislation. Then, the posts keep coming. Musk said he was never shown the bill. Musk replies to X user Autism Capital touting his role in the election, saying that without him, Trump would've lost and Democrats would control the House. He followed up with "Such ingratitude". Musk reposts a post from an X user called Wall Street Mav that expressed hope the disagreement didn't damage the relationship between the billionaire and Trump. Musk quickly follows with a video from when Trump touted Teslas in front of the White House. "Remember this?" Musk said, tagging the president. Trump jumps into the fray on his Truth Social platform. He said he asked the billionaire to leave and that Musk went "CRAZY". The president quickly followed with a huge threat to the businesses of the world's richest man. He said the easiest way to save money would be to cut government contracts from Musk's companies. Total revenue for SpaceX and Tesla from federal unclassified contracts since fiscal year 2000 is $22.5 billion, according to Bloomberg Government data. Musk responds to Trump's posts: "Such an obvious lie. So sad." He then reposted a reference to how terminating government contracts would end the International Space Station, with laughing emojis. "Go ahead, make my day..." he said. Musk said it's "time to drop a really big bomb," insinuating that Trump was withholding the release of files related to disgraced New York financier Jeffrey Epstein because of president's own presence in them. Musk then made his own threat, saying he would decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, which ferries cargo and people to the International Space Station for the US. As the spat unfolded throughout the afternoon, Tesla shares tumbled and investors panicked on X. Ross Gerber of Gerber Kawasaki Inc. urged someone to take the phone away from Musk. By the time the market closed, Tesla shares had fallen 14%, the biggest decline since March. Later in the evening, in response to an X user with the handle "@Fab25june" who called on the two men to "cool off," Musk said he wouldn't decommission the Dragon spacecraft after all.

Trump-Musk spat spills onto social media: Blow-by-blow account of how the tiff unfolded

The bromance between the world's richest person and the world's most powerful politician is up in flames. And you can simply head to their social media handles for a front-row seat. Elon Musk bid farewell to the White House only last week, and even then uncertainty loomed over whether he had actually left. The Tesla chief executive had said he would remain a friend and advisor to US President Donald Trump as he stepped away from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with trimming government expenses. Soon after his pivot away from the Trump administration, Musk bashed Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill', stating it would cause fiscal deficit to spike trillions of dollars. Why PV Anvar looms over Congress, LDF in Nilambur bypoll

The forthcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala's Malappuram is generating huge political interest with the entry into the fray of its two-term independent MLA P.V. who had a falling out with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), after he targeted chief minister Pinrayi Vijayan, is now state convenor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He resigned as MLA in January after facing the heat for alleging that additional DGP (director general of police) M.R. Ajithkumar was involved in gold smuggling. Ajithkumar is widely considered as an officer enjoying the trust of the Vijayan Anvar contesting the June 19 bypoll, both the LDF and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) are gearing up for the used to be a Congress citadel, with Aryadan Muhammed holding the seat uninterrupted for almost 30 years since 1987. Anvar, backed by the LDF, wrested the constituency in 2016 by 11,500 votes and again in 2021. The Congress has fielded Aryadan Muhammed's son Aryadan Shoukath, who had lost the election in 2016. The LDF nominee is the CPI(M)'s M. Swaraj, a youth leader and native of Nilambur. The BJP has announced advocate Mohan George, a former Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader, as its candidate in continuation of the party's efforts to woo the Christian nomination paper as a TMC nominee was rejected by the returning officer as the party had apparently delayed authorisation. Anvar then is technically contesting as an Independent, which could mean political freedom to decide on his loyalties should he do the Congress-led UDF and LDF assess Anvar's impact on the bypoll? 'Anvar cannot change the destiny of the Congress in Nilambur. We will win by a massive mandate and also inflict a shock on the Pinarayi Vijayan government. The people of Kerala are waiting to give their verdict,' said leader of the Opposition V.D. state secretary M.V. Govindan Master considers Anvar politically irrelevant. 'Anvar is of concern for the Congress. We are least bothered about him. We are confident of winning the bypoll,' he told INDIA Anvar remains a force to reckon with in the electoral politics of Malappuram. The 58-year-old entrepreneur-turned-politician has a Congress family background. He started his electoral career with the 2011 assembly polls, in which he contested from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) stronghold of Eranad as an Independent, losing narrowly by 11,246 votes but securing a 41.5 per cent vote contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 from Wayanad but failed—a vote share of just 4 per cent. In the 2016 assembly polls, the CPI(M) backed him from Nilambur and again in 2021. Under the LDF banner, he also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Ponnani as an Independent, losing by over 193,000 was favoured by the CPI(M) as he lent the party political mileage in Malappuram against the IUML. But relations strained after he was denied a ministerial post in the second innings of the Vijayan government. Whether or not he wins, Anvar can arguably determine the outcome of the election since he has a captive vote base of around 25,000 in Nilambur. Good reason for the LDF and the UDF to keep fingers crossed till counting to India Today Magazine
