Google Play Gift Cards phased out in Malaysia from June 15 amid scam fears and rise of digital payments
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Google Play Gift Cards which was introduced in Malaysia back in 2018 will be discontinued in the coming weeks.
According to a notice issued via email from Google Payments, the Google Play Gift Cards will no longer be available for purchase starting 15th June 2025 and existing users will have about 7 months to spend their existing credit.
If you still have spare Google Play Gift Cards, you can redeem them before 15th June 2025 but you must spend the prepaid balance by 31st January 2026 to avoid losing the value.
Once you've redeemed the gift card, the balance can be used to pay for content and services such as apps, games, movies and eBooks on the Google Play store.
Google added that promotional Google Play Balance will still be issued or held with applicable expiry dates.
If your remaining Google Play balance is insufficient, you can combine it with other payment methods which include credit or debit cards, FPX online banking, carrier billing or eWallets (Touch 'n Go eWallet, Boost, ShopeePay).
The Google Play Gift Cards are typically sold via 7-Eleven and they come in denominations of RM50, RM100 and RM200. The cards are issued by Google Payment Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
These gift cards were seen as an alternative payment option for Google Play users who don't have credit or debit cards. It also provides somewhat better control on spending compared to a linked credit or debit card.
While Google didn't disclose the reason behind the discontinuation of its Gift Cards, the move seems to mark a shift towards digital payment options especially with the inclusion of major eWallets on Google Play in Malaysia.
It is also seen as an attempt to mitigate gift card scams as there are fraudulent activities involving victims buying Google Play Gift Cards and sharing the codes to the scammers. — SoyaCincau

Get the tag, or pay the fine
PUTRAJAYA: From July 1, all vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore will require a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), as full enforcement of the scheme is set to begin. Vehicles without a VEP face fines and must register for the permit before leaving Malaysia. 'We began this scheme with a soft approach, mainly advocacy, in October last year. No summons were issued then. 'But beginning July 1, the VEP will be fully enforced, whereby the Road Transport Department will issue summonses to foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic) told a press conference at the ministry's headquarters here. The VEP scheme for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore by land began on Oct 1 last year, initially focusing on advocacy. Under the scheme, foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore by land are required to have a VEP, which comes in RFID tags issued by the Malaysian Transport Ministry. The VEP RFID tag is linked to a Touch 'n Go e-wallet account. According to the website, the VEP RFID tag processing fee is RM10, while the collection agent service fee is RM30. Singapore also employs a VEP system for foreign-registered cars entering the republic. The One Motoring site by Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) states Malaysia-registered vehicles must have a valid Autopass card, insurance, road tax and the LTA's VEP approval email before entering the country. Loke said enforcement is in accordance with Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which stipulates that it is an offence for any person to drive a foreign-registered motor vehicle into or within Malaysia without a valid permit. Private and company vehicles without a valid VEP will be slapped with a RM300 fine. The fine must be paid and the vehicles must be registered for the VEP prior to being permitted to exit Malaysia. Company vehicles that have not yet activated a pre-registered VEP will be issued with a reminder notice, and the vehicle will be allowed to exit Malaysia. 'It (the fine) must be paid via cashless methods at Road Transport Department counters, mobile counters or through MyEG.' Loke assured Singaporean vehicle owners that their vehicles are still permitted to enter Malaysia despite not having a VEP. 'We will already know it through our systems. They will be subject to our enforcement measures, which means they will receive a summons and must register for a VEP before exiting Malaysia,' he said. 'We are giving them a four-week notice period so that they have enough time to activate their RFID before July 1,' he added. He said enforcement checks would be carried out at locations away from the Malaysia-Singapore border checkpoints to avoid congestion. As of June 2 this year, a total of 231,018 RFID tags have been issued to private vehicles, with 36,511 yet to be activated or installed. Applications for the VEP RFID tag can be made at Vehicle owners can collect the VEP RFID tag either at the VEP Tag Collection Centre in Danga Bay or have it sent by post to their address.

Reddit sues AI startup Anthropic for allegedly using data without permission
FILE PHOTO: Reddit app is seen on a smartphone in this illustration taken, July 13, 2021. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo (Reuters) -Reddit sued the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic on Wednesday, accusing it of stealing data from the social media discussion website to train its AI models despite publicly assuring it wouldn't. The complaint filed in San Francisco Superior Court is the latest battle over AI companies' alleged unauthorized use of third-party content. Anthropic's backers include and Google parent Alphabet. "We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously," an Anthropic spokesperson said. According to the complaint, Anthropic has resisted entering a licensing agreement even as it trained its Claude chatbot on Reddit content, despite assuring last July it had blocked its bots from accessing Reddit's platform. Reddit quoted Claude admitting it was "trained on at least some Reddit data" and did not know if that content was deleted. It also said Anthropic's bots have accessed or tried to access Reddit content more than 100,000 times, undermining the company's allegedly styling itself as an AI "white knight" committed to trust and honesty. "Anthropic refuses to respect Reddit's guardrails and enter into a license agreement," unlike Google and OpenAI, the complaint said. By scraping content and using it for commercial purposes, Anthropic violated Reddit's user policy and "enriched itself to the tune of tens of billions of dollars," the complaint added. In a statement, Reddit Chief Legal Officer Ben Lee said "we believe in an open internet," but AI companies need "clear limitations" on how they use content they scrape. Reddit and Anthropic are based in San Francisco, about a 10-minute walk from each other. The lawsuit seeks unspecified restitution and punitive damages, and an injunction prohibiting Anthropic from using Reddit content for commercial purposes. Anthropic introduced its newest Claude models, Opus 4 and Sonnet 4, on May 22. Overall annualized revenue has reached $3 billion, two people familiar with the matter said last week. The case is Reddit Inc v Anthropic PBC, California Superior Court, San Francisco County, No. CGC-25-524892. AI-driven search ad spending set to surge to $26 billion by 2029, data shows
FILE PHOTO: Miniature figures of people are seen in front of the new Google logo in this illustration taken May 13, 2025. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo (Reuters) -Spending on AI-powered search advertising is poised to surge to nearly $26 billion by 2029 from just over $1 billion this year in the U.S., driven by rapid adoption of the technology and more sophisticated user targeting, data from Emarketer showed on Wednesday. Companies that rely on traditional keyword-based search ads could experience revenue declines due to the growing popularity of AI search ads, which offer greater convenience and engagement for users, according to the research firm. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Search giants such as Alphabet-owned Google and Microsoft's Bing have added AI capabilities to better compete with chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, which provide users with direct information without requiring to click through multiple results. Apple is exploring the integration of AI-driven search capabilities into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Google. The report has come as concerns grew about users increasingly turning to the chatbots for conversational search and AI-powered search results could upend business models of some companies. Online education firm Chegg said in May that it would lay off about 248 employees as it looks to cut costs and streamline operations because students are using AI-powered tools including ChatGPT over traditional edtech platforms. QUOTE "Publishers and other sites are feeling the pain from AI search. As they lose out on traffic, we're seeing publishers lean into subscriptions and paid AI licensing deals to bolster revenue," Emarketer analyst Minda Smiley said. GRAPHIC CONTEXT AI search ad spending is expected to constitute nearly 1% of total search ad spending this year and 13.6% by 2029 in the U.S., according to Emarketer. Sectors such as financial services, technology, telecom, and healthcare are embracing AI as they are seeing clear advantages in using the technology to enhance their ad strategies, while the retail industry's adoption is slow, the report said. Google recently announced the expansion of its AI-powered search capabilities into the consumer packaged goods sector through enhancements in Google Shopping.
