Liverpool will only sign right player at right price amid Isak row
Liverpool boss Arne Slot said on Thursday the Premier League champions will only sign the right player for the right price but refused to be drawn on the club's position regarding unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Since Liverpool's reported £110 million ($148 million) bid for the 25-year-old Sweden international was rejected earlier this month, they have not held further talks but equally do not appear to have given up hope of bringing Isak to Anfield. Newcastle, for their part, are reported to be demanding a British record transfer fee of £150 million for Isak. The forward's decision to go public on Tuesday, accusing Newcastle of breaking promises and saying he "can't continue" and "change is in the best interests of everyone", has intensified speculation about Isak's future. Newcastle's response was to insist: "We have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met." The back and forth exchanges have all added another layer of interest to Liverpool's match at Newcastle's St. James' Park on Monday, with Isak expected to be absent again as he continues to train away from the squad. Slot, speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, said: "I am happy with the squad but if we think there is a player who can really make us better then this club has always shown they can bring them in." The Dutch manager, who has seen Liverpool's £300million-plus spending spree this summer offset by more than £200 million worth of sales, added: "But it needs to be everything we want: right transfer fee, right position and the player wants to come to us. "I don't think (it will be a busy end to the summer transfer window) because (that would mean) I would be unhappy with the squad and I am happy with the squad. Slot rejected suggestion Liverpool's trip to the northeast would be made easier by Isak's absence and the ensuing turmoil it has caused Newcastle. "I don't think they are a club with troubles," he said. "I assume Isak is not playing but they still have Anthony Gordon as a nine, they have Anthony Elanga as a right winger and Harvey Barnes from the left -- and Jacob Murphy is not even playing. "This is the Premier League, we all have a lot of options and Newcastle have them as well." But Slot's options at right-back have been reduced, with new signing Jeremie Frimpong ruled out until after next month's international break with a hamstring injury sustained in their opening victory over Bournemouth. Joe Gomez was pressed into action for 18 minutes despite having had just two training sessions after three weeks out with injury. Gomez could still be in contention at Newcastle, with Conor Bradley only returning to training on Thursday. Starlink power cuts reveal vulnerabilities of space-based internet systems
Two major power cuts on Elon Musk's Starlink have shown how vulnerable satellite internet systems can be, especially when compared to the more resilient fibre and mobile networks most people rely on. Even though these systems, which Jeff Bezos's Amazon is also developing through its Project Kuiper constellation, are helping to revolutionise global connectivity by reaching remote areas, the recent blackouts show they are still prone to disruptions. Starlink users across several continents lost service in July for more than an hour after a technical issue in the company's network software. Another power cut on Monday left thousands of customers in North America without internet access until engineers restored the system. More than 8,000 Starlink satellites operate 550km above Earth. Users connect to them with their own dish, which links to a satellite overhead before the signal is passed to ground stations that plug into the wider internet. Updated satellites also use laser links to transfer data between each other in space, which helps SpaceX reduce its reliance on ground stations and improve coverage in remote areas and over oceans. Why are space-based systems less reliable? Dr Sarath Raj, director of the satellite ground station at Amity University in Dubai, said a Starlink power cut is a reminder of the difference between centralised and decentralised systems. 'Terrestrial networks like fibre and mobile are designed with multiple redundant pathways and local rerouting, so a cut cable or a downed tower typically only affects a limited area,' he told The National. 'Starlink, on the other hand, despite having thousands of satellites, depends heavily on its centralised control software. A single software glitch or misconfigured update can disrupt connectivity worldwide, creating a single point of failure.' Dr Raj said power cuts in traditional telecoms are usually caused by physical problems such as damaged cables, fallen towers or power failures, which tend to be limited to one area. But in low-Earth orbit constellations like Starlink, disruptions are more prone to be global and systemic, with the greater risks coming from software glitches or cyber attacks rather than individual satellites. 'The vast number of satellites in Starlink's constellation provides impressive physical coverage, but that alone does not guarantee reliability,' said Dr Raj. 'The real vulnerabilities lie in the ground-based infrastructure and control software, which act as the network's brains. 'Cyber attacks on centralised routing systems, disruptions at ground gateways that link satellites to the global internet, or even exploits in user terminals could all degrade or shut down service on a large scale.' How important is Starlink? Starlink was a crucial communications lifeline for Ukraine's military after Russia's invasion, restoring internet access where traditional networks had been destroyed. But when the service was first activated in 2022, Mr Musk warned it could also be hit by cyber attacks. Mr Musk posted on X at the time: 'Important warning: Starlink is the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine, so probability of being targeted is high. Please use with caution.' Xianbin Wang, research chairman at the Trusted Communications and Computing at Western University, Canada, said low-Earth orbit (Leo) systems are less robust overall. 'As a standalone internet service provider, Leo networks are much less resilient than fibre and mobile networks,' he said. 'Traditional telecom systems are developed with highly redundant capacity and architecture. As a comparison, Leo satellite networks have very limited capacity and redundancy. 'Consequently, the outage probability in such networks is expected to be much higher.' Dr Raj echoed Mr Wang's comments and said that Starlink does provide 'impressive coverage' but the real vulnerabilities lie in its ground-based infrastructure and control software, which act as the network's 'brains'. 'Cyber attacks on centralised routing systems, disruptions at ground gateways that link satellites to the global internet, or even exploits in user terminals could all degrade or shut down service on a large scale,' he said. What are the advantages? Despite these risks, the internet satellites do still fill a crucial gap, especially in remote and conflict-hit areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable. 'The advantage of the satellite communication is its global coverage, including remote but critical areas,' Mr Wang said. 'Depending on the needs and situations, Leo satellite networks could play a critical role.' Mr Raj said that because of the growing reliance on these systems, internet satellites should be considered part of a country's critical infrastructure. 'Starlink has evolved from an innovative service into a strategic asset, relied upon by remote communities and even militaries in conflict zones such as Ukraine,' he said. 'For this reason, it should be treated as critical infrastructure, similar to power grids, water systems and terrestrial telecom.' Regulating such a system, however, is complicated because Starlink is a private company serving a global customer base. 'This creates jurisdictional challenges as it is unclear which authorities set the rules and ensure compliance when the service spans multiple countries,' said Dr Raj.

The UK is back in business. Someone forgot to tell British investors
Britain's stock market is outperforming Wall Street in 2025, and the UK economy has enjoyed the fastest growth of any G7 country during the first half of the year. Yet British investors are mostly missing out while foreign buyers are reaping the benefits. The UK stock market has been plagued by sluggish performance and a dearth of IPOs for so long that any good news has a tendency to travel quickly among the local investor community. Last week, I received several emails about a study from Schroders showing that US investors were moving more money into UK stocks than anywhere else. Indeed, after withdrawing almost $100 billion from the UK between 2020 and 2022, the last three years have seen persistent inflows from Americans. Unfortunately, this optimism about UK stocks doesn't appear to be shared by UK investors. According to the Investment Association, a UK trade body, retail investors have sold more than £50 billion ($68 billion) in UK equity funds over the last five years while buying more than £25 billion ($34 billion) in international equity funds. And unlike American investors, the domestic crowd has not warmed to UK stocks in the last three years. Brits' pessimism regarding their own country is by no means a new phenomenon, particularly if we use consumer sentiment as a gauge. While it has been negative on average for over 40 years, consumers have become much more pessimistic since the end of the financial crisis in 2009. This national gloom has affected both institutional and retail investors. In 1997, UK pension funds on average invested 53% of their assets in UK stocks. By 2022, that had dropped to 6%, according to a study by the think tank New Financial. Perhaps then it shouldn't be surprising that the UK economy is doing well not because of the British but despite them. In the first half of 2025, the UK was the fastest-growing G7 country, recording a 2.2% annualised GDP expansion, compared to 1.2% for the U.S. and 1.4% for the euro zone. But the UK's surprisingly strong economic activity in the first six months of 2025 came despite lacklustre annualised household consumption growth of 0.9% and a so-so business investment expansion of 1.7%. The main driver of GDP strength was a 20% annualised drop in the UK's trade deficit as foreigners bought more UK goods and services. Welcome surprise Another group that seems to be oblivious to the recovery in the UK economy and stock market is UK analysts. During the Q2 2025 earnings season, FTSE 350 companies have beaten earnings expectations by 16.5% on average, while stocks in the S&P 500 beat expectations by 8.3%. Given that roughly an 8% earnings beat is now expected in the U.S., share prices during the current earnings season have actually dropped by an average of 0.9% in the week after earnings releases. Meanwhile, in the UK, share prices have rallied by an average of 1.1% in the week after results, suggesting that investors have been pleasantly surprised by UK companies' robust earnings. Excessive pesimism Whinging is a national sport in the UK, but the degree of pessimism espoused by UK investors has arguably become excessive. And if I, a German, think that the British have become too pessimistic that means something. Ultimately, the UK economy appears to be doing just fine, and most leading indicators point to a continued recovery of GDP growth in the second half of this year. True, inflation has proven sticky, coming in at 3.8% in July, the highest level among wealthy countries, but the jump last month was largely driven by volatile transportation costs. There is also some softness in domestic services demand, and uncertainty surrounding possible tax hikes in autumn is weighing on investment slightly, but these factors are unlikely to derail the longer-term economic recovery. Meanwhile, international businesses are coming back to the UK markets. French media giant Canal+ listed in London last year, Greek energy company Metlen did so in August, and both Norwegian software company Visma and Italian food producer Newlat are expected to hold their IPOs in London. Investors and businesses around the world seem to realise that the UK's outlook is persistently improving. Now, if somebody could please tell this to the British, I would be much obliged.
