Ananda Lewis, the former MTV VJ known in the late 1990s as the 'It Girl' for the hip-hop generation, has died after a years-long battle with breast cancer.
The TV host, former model and social activist was 52.
'She's free, and in His heavenly arms,' her sister Lakkshmi Emory announced on Facebook Wednesday, punctuated with a long string of broken-heart emojis. 'Lord, rest her soul.'
Born on March 21, 1973 in San Diego, Lewis first got noticed at MTV when she interviewed then First Lady Hillary Clinton for BET's Teen Summit, according to People .
She went on to become one of the pioneering music-video network's most popular hosts, helming Total Request Live and Hot Zone before leaving MTV in 2001 to host her eponymous talk show.
Though The Ananda Lewis Show eventually grew to 1.35 million viewers, the series premiered the day before the Sept 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, which delayed the run by about three weeks. The show eventually lasted two seasons.
Lewis went on to become an actress and producer, working on such movies as On the Line, Nora's Hair Salon II and Method & Red.
Lewis announced last October that the stage 3 breast cancer she had revealed in 2020 had metastasised and returned as stage 4. She had opted to forego a double mastectomy during her initial treatment.
She first let the world know in October 2020, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, that she'd been battling the disease privately for two years. She urged women to get routine mammograms, something she had opted out of for fear of radiation.
'For a really long time, I have refused mammograms, and that was a mistake,' she said in a video at the time. 'I watched my mum get mammograms for almost 30 years almost, and at the end of that, she had breast cancer, and I said, 'Huh. Radiation exposure for years equals breast cancer. Yeah, I'm going to pass. Thanks anyway.' '
She said she began treatment that shrank some of the tumours, but it didn't stop the onslaught.
'I wish I could go back,' she said in one update. 'It's important for me to admit where I went wrong with this.' – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service

The 39-year-old wrote that it was around the time when his grandmother died. 'I said to my grandmother's body that I have to treat my illness and make a name for myself,' he wrote in Chinese. Former HK artiste Don Li quits showbiz, clarifies rumours about becoming a monk

Former Hong Kong singer-actor Don Li clarified that his time as a monk was only temporary. Photos: Don Li/Instagram Former Hong Kong singer-actor Don Li has announced his exit from the entertainment industry. In a recent TikTok video, Li, 43, said he hasn't pursued singing professionally for several years and only posts covers of old songs occasionally on the platform. He also took to Instagram to share more about his decision to step away from the spotlight, adding that he's currently working hard to be the best version of himself. 'I hope that my life journey will be quiet. I want to concentrate on work, spend more time with my family, connect with like-minded friends and travel. That's enough for me,' he wrote. Li also addressed the rumours about him becoming a monk, which surfaced earlier in February after he posted photos of himself sporting a shaved head, dressed in monastic robes. The Port Of Call (2015) star clarified that his time as a monk was only temporary instead of a lifelong commitment. 'It's a solemn and serious ritual, so I won't explain too much. Life's journey is divided into many stages, and I currently like myself the most at this stage,' he wrote. Li kickstarted his entertainment career in 2003 after emerging as a finalist in a talent show. He teamed up with singer Mandy Chiang to form a duet act in 2005, but the pair parted ways in 2007 to pursue their music careers as solo artistes.

Taiwanese tourist sorry for criticising M'sian food

Compiled by DIYANA PFORDTEN, C. ARUNO and R. ARAVINTHAN A TOURIST from Taiwan, who drew flak online for claiming that Malaysian food was not fit for human consumption, has apologised, Sin Chew Daily reported. She explained that she had wanted to convey the message in a light-hearted manner, but now regretted her choice of words. 'I wanted to make a funny post once I returned home about how Malaysian food did not suit my palate. However, my poor choice of words led to a misunderstanding,' she wrote on Instagram. 'I bear no ill will and did not mean to attack anyone. I apologise to all Malaysians!' It was reported earlier that the woman had said she never wanted to return to Malaysia due to the awful food, and that she was glad to be back in Taiwan so that she could enjoy food 'fit for humans'. Her post drew a wave of criticism from Malaysians, many of whom urged her to respect the culinary culture of other countries. 'Many people say they love Malaysian food. If it does not suit your palate, there is no need to belittle another country's food. 'Respect and politeness are things everyone truly needs to learn,' one Internet user wrote. > The daily also reported that a man in China's Yunnan province started seeing sea creatures like octopi and jellyfish in his living room after consuming wild mushrooms but recovered thanks to quick medical intervention. On May 20, a man surnamed Hu bought lurid bolete mushrooms from the market, cooked, and ate them. Soon after, he began hallucinating octopi, jellyfish, butterflies, and even a phoenix in his living room. It's believed that other toxic fungi resembling lurid bolete were mixed in his mushrooms, leading to accidental poisoning.
