
Generation Z Meets ‘The Breakfast Club'

She was referring to 'The Breakfast Club,' which I had just watched with my high-school freshmen. We had recently read 'The Odyssey' and I thought it might be fun to see a movie that also deals with identity and belonging. I hoped my students would see connections between 'The Breakfast Club' and 'The Odyssey' about the distance one gets and doesn't get from home. I was their age in 1985, the year the film came out.
'The Breakfast Club' is about five high-school students who bond during Saturday detention. Each represents an archetype—nerd, princess, jock, basket case and burnout—which makes their connection more poignant.
The movie had a big effect on me. I envied the intimacy among the detention-shackled teens. My students were envious for different reasons. They were shocked that the characters went a whole day without social media or parents, and that they spoke candidly about sex and self-loathing—conversations unlikely to happen in school today.
'We're never unplugged,' one student said. 'Group texts, Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok 24/7.'
When I was in high school, my friends and I had space from our families during the school day, and from each other at home. Social media has blurred these lines, and it is costing our students. They're struggling more than ever with anxiety, depression and short attention spans. My students know their lives aren't like the movies, but they're living every moment on-screen.
In 1985 I loved 'The Breakfast Club' so much that I skipped gym class to get a Saturday detention. I thought it would be like in the movie—deep conversations with characters played by Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and other stars. It wasn't. No one opened up about teenage angst. Someone shot a spitball. I hoped my father would drop me off and pick me up like the teens in the film, but he said no. I walked to and from school that day wondering if my life would ever be like the movies.
After school the day we watched the film, my students rushed out with the other 4,000 teenagers. Some walked, took the bus, got a ride, rode their bikes or skateboards. I headed to the faculty parking lot overlooking our sports field. For a moment, it resembled the field that John Bender (Judd Nelson) crosses in the film. The grass was plush, the bleachers empty. I pictured him walking and raising his fist in that final scene to the Simple Minds song, 'Don't You (Forget About Me).'
Yet as I sat in school traffic, I stared again. It didn't look like the field in the movie at all. The parking lot was too close, the bleachers a different scale; the grass needed watering.
Some of my students whizzed past me. Real life might not be like the movies, but for a moment—wind in their hair, backpacks slung over shoulders, alongside friends—they looked like teens from any era. Perhaps the commute itself could provide space from the adult world, for while they were riding, they existed in a neutral space of aliveness—offline, untethered, neither in school nor home, neither bored nor plugged in. As I drove out of the parking lot, I was envious of their youth, and grateful for the distance.

Sadhna Broadcast case: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has barred actor Arshad Warsi, his wife Maria Goretti, and 57 others from being involved in securities markets for periods ranging from one to five years. The action comes following the actor and his wife's collaboration on videos posted on YouTube that prompted viewers to purchase shares of Sadhna Broadcast, the central agency said. Arshad Warsi banned from securities market, fined Rs 5 lakh Actor Arshad Warsi, best known for his work in films such as Munnabhai MBBS and Jolly LLB, has landed in trouble because of his role in the Sadhna Broadcast case. On May 29, Sebi imposed monetary penalties of Rs 5 lakh each on Warsi and his wife, Goretti. Moreover, they have been banned from the market for a year. Further, the regulatory body has imposed financial penalties ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5 crore on 57 other parties. This includes the promoters of Sadhna Broadcast, which is now known as Crystal Business System Ltd. Sebi further asked all 59 entities to return collective illegal profits of Rs 58.01 crore. An additional annual interest of 12 per cent will also be levied. This has to be paid jointly till the entire amount is sorted. As per Sebi's findings, Arshad Warsi earned profits of Rs 41.70 lakh, while Maria Goretti made Rs 50.35 lakh from their actions. About the Sadhna Broadcast case In its detailed report, Sebi noted that the scheme was carried out in two stages. In the first one, promoter-associated entities conducted trades internally in a bid to increase the scrip price and create fake market activity. The transactions had an impact on pricing largely due to limited market liquidity. This gave the concerned parties an opportunity to boost the share value while utilising negligible trading resources. After this, promotional content was broadcast on various YouTube channels. These videos projected SBL as a top-notch investment option and went hand-in-hand with the orchestrated market activities Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti married in 1996. They have two children. Goretti was a noted VJ. She also made a guest appearance in Rajat Kapoor's Raghu Romeo. Arshad Warsi, meanwhile, is gearing up for the release of Jolly LLB 3 and Welcome to the Jungle.

Battling with Abdominal TB Kusha shared that she used to compromise a lot on her meals, and one day she developed an evening fever that persisted consistently for 12 days. After multiple tests, doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. Eventually, one doctor suggested it might be tuberculosis (TB). Kusha realized that because she was eating so little, her immunity had dropped drastically. She explained that women over 25-26 years of age are more prone to getting TB, and she was diagnosed with abdominal TB due to her weakened immune system. 9. On being healthy for herself She added that now, at 33, for the first time in her life, she felt like she wanted to lose weight for herself. She told herself that she was by herself now, that she was responsible for everything that was happening in her life, and that she needed to take care of herself, because nobody else was coming. A video currently going viral allegedly shows a massive storm that recently hit Israel. The footage shows debris crashing through an underpass at high speed, with people seen running in panic. A woman in a hoodie appears to be filming the scene in selfie mode. Text overlaid on the clip reads, 'Today Israel.' A Facebook user shared this video on May 26 with a Hindi caption that translates to: 'A terrific storm has struck Israel.'advertisementIndia Today Fact Check, however, found that this video dates back to April 2024 and shows a storm in Probe A reverse search of the video's keyframes led us to multiple April 2024 posts on social media. One such Instagram post described it as a storm in Dubai. We also found this video in an April 17, 2024, Daily Mail report about a huge storm that struck Dubai at that time. According to the report, heavy rains caused flooding in Dubai, resulting in airport disruptions and cancelled social media users attributed the video to a vlogger called Polina Nedogon. We found that Nedogon had shared this video on her TikTok account on April 16, 2024, mentioning the location as to Wooglobe, a company that shares user-generated content, Nedogon narrated her experience of the storm. "I had a day of travel, three flights, and a bus to Dubai. Before departure, I didn't know about the upcoming storm. I barely made it to the Ibn Battuta Mall bus stop, and this is what happened next," she to her Twitch and YouTube accounts, Polina Nedogon is a Russian acrobatics coach and a were also able to locate the video around Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall bus stop on Google Maps.
