Shamrock Rovers go top of Premier Division for first time in TWO YEARS as Greene, Grace, and Gaffney down Drogheda Utd

The Irish Sun09-05-2025
SHAMROCK ROVERS moved top of the table for the first time since they won four in a row thanks to their Triple-G threat.
Aaron Greene and Lee Grace scored two goals in three second-half minutes in Tallaght before Rory Gaffney netted a comical third in injury time to sink yesterday morning's table-toppers

It was the first time Rovers have been top since 2023 when they lifted their fourth title in four years.
And the second-half onslaught ensured a missed Graham Burke penalty and the frustration of the first period — when the Drogs did what they have been doing to so many teams — was all forgotten.
Rovers boss
Doherty said on
TV
that it was incorrect as his team was the second-least fouled team in the league, though in truth, like the league itself, it is a condensed table with the most-fouled team only winning two more free-kicks per game.

But it was clear from early on that Drogheda are indeed very good at what they do, which is soaking up pressure,
running
down the clock and hitting teams on the break.
Early on, Bradley was complaining about visiting keeper Luke Dennison wasting time. The stopper was warned after ten minutes by referee Rob Harvey and soon jeered by fans.
But while Dennison was certainly taking his time when he could, he rarely had the chance as the ball was not often in Drogs' possession.
Instead, it was the Hoops moving the ball, both patiently and impatiently, and looking to carve open the second-meanest defence in the league.

They were given a great chance to take the lead on 32 minutes, winning a penalty after
Josh
Honohan went over a trailing leg of Owen Lambe.
Before it could be taken, there was a delay as Shane Farrell made his way into the area before sitting down and calling for treatment.
'Nothing surprises me' - Stephen Bradley reacts to ex-Shamrock Rovers star Liam Burt's social media outburst
And whether or not that wait put off Burke, he dragged his shot as it struck Dennison's left-hand post and went wide.
Rovers kept passing and looking for openings but the Drogs were causing them problems with their few forays forward.
Farrell put a free-kick wide early on and Warren Davis flashed a shot just off
target
when offside.
But the second half saw Rovers make adjustments and seize control.
Greene netted on 50 minutes when he broke the offside trap on to Grace's lofted pass forward and controlled the ball on his chest before firing over the advancing Dennison.
Moments later, the keeper had to palm away a
Matt Healy
shot for a corner, only for the Hoops to score again off that set-piece.
Having been the provider for the first, Grace became the scorer for the second as he rose unmarked on the penalty spot to head home Jack Byrne's corner. Drogheda were forced to take more risks after that and they did push bodies forward looking for a goal to get back into it.
But with Byrne's trickery in the middle of the park and Rovers knowing they did not need to chase the game, it played into the hosts' hands.
There were several half-chances as Roberto Lopes and Gaffney went close while Dennison had to deal with a host of dangerous set-pieces.
And he was caught out in injury time when he raced out of his area to head clear a long ball but only succeeded in heading it against Michael Noonan, with the ricochet falling for Gaffney to slowly but surely roll into an empty net.

Sligo Rovers sign former Ipswich defender Edwin Agbaje

Sligo Rovers have signed defender Edwin Agbaje on a short-term deal until until the end of the season. The Offaly native, who operates predominantly on the right side, joins the Bit O'Red having departed Championship side Ipswich Town recently. The 21-year-old began his life in football at local side Edenderry Town, before moving on to join the academy at Shamrock Rovers at 14. Two years later, he was picked up by the Tractor Boys and spent five years there and was also loaned to both Sutton United and Yeovil Town. Agbaje has represented the Republic of Ireland at various underage levels and was named Ipswich's Academy Player of the Year in 2023. Agbaje is the seventh new player in the door this summer as manager John Russell looks to finish the season strongly. Speaking to the full-back says he feels the Showgrounds is the ideal place for him to continue his career, noting the club's model and record in terms of giving youth a chance. "I spoke to people at the club a lot over the summer and got to hear in detail about the style of play and how things are done here at Rovers," he said. "It really impressed me and Sligo seems like a place where I can really fit in. It's a great place for young players like myself to develop. John (Russell) has a proven track record of bringing through, developing and giving chances to younger players like me so the opportunity here speaks for itself. "I've been here for a few sessions now and I am loving it. I've got on really well with the players and coaches so now I'm just looking forward to getting out there and helping the team out. "I love to attack, to get forward and support the front men. But I'm a defender first and foremost and my job is to keep the ball out of our net and that's what I'm here to do." Russell has long been an admirer of the former Shamrock Rovers defender and says the move is one that he hopes will benefit both parties. "Edwin is an extremely talented player," he says. "He's got all the attributes you look for in a defender. He has pace, he's strong, aggressive and good on the ball.

YouTube prankster-turned-prizefighter Paul and two-time heavyweight champion AJ are in talks for a controversial bout next year. 4 Jake Paul looks is in talks to fight Anthony Joshua Credit: Getty 4 Joshua has been backed to win by KO with ease Credit: Getty Advertisement That is despite the massive size, skill and experience disparity between the pair. Joshua, 35, brutally knocked out ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou, 38, in two rounds of their crossover clash in Riyadh in March 2024. A year earlier, Paul, 28, suffered his first and so far only loss in the ring against Tommy Fury, 26, via split-decision. He has since improved to 12-1 and earned himself a 14th ranked place in the WBA's cruiserweight rankings after beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Advertisement READ MORE IN BOXING A FUR THING Itauma 'more impressive than Joshua and Fury' and must become world champion But moving up to heavyweight to fight AJ - who stands 6ft 6in and 18 STONE - is seen as a dangerous suicide mission amongst almost all fans. But, former cruiserweight and heavyweight champ Haye reckons it will be painless for Paul and over before he even knows it. The HighBet ambassador told SunSport: "I don't think it's dangerous at all! Itauma told 'anything other than becoming world champion is a failure' with Brit 'more impressive than Joshua and Fury' "He had maybe a headache the next day, but there was no damage done, so I think it's actually quite a safe fight because it'll be over very, very fast." Advertisement Paul did fight at heavyweight last November when Mike Tyson came out of retirement at the age of 58 - losing over eight shorter two-minute rounds. The American bulked up to 227lb (16st 2lb) and admitted to struggling to even RUN due to the weight gain. He moved back down to the 200lb cruiserweight limit of 14st 4lb in June when he beat ex-middleweight champ Chavez Jr, 39, over ten rounds. That is FOUR STONE lighter than Joshua - who is yet to return since his KO loss to Daniel Dubois last September. Talks with his promoter Eddie Hearn and Paul's promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian have continued - including a one-hour meeting in person. Advertisement Hearn has even labelled the negotiations "advanced" and believes Paul is now the frontrunner for AJ's next opponent. The fight is likely to fall in 2026 with America, Britain and Saudi all potential hosts.
