Samsung's Android Update—What Galaxy Owners Must Do Now

Forbes25-04-2025
Here's what Galaxy owners must do
Samsung will be delighted to put its One UI 7 rollout in the rearview mirror, and now seems to be accelerating its upgrade process after months of delays and frustrations. In addition to a raft of feature updates, the new OS brings major security and privacy improvements from both Google and Samsung, and a new, Apple-like ecosystem.
After waiting so long, Galaxy owners will be keen to jump straight in. But there's a timely note of caution from SammyFans before you do: The "essential practice of downloading apps updates that you should perform after completing the installation."
This won't come as a surprise — but it's easy to overlook as your phone reboots. Most of these updates will be around alignment with the new OS to ensure a seamless, bugfree experience. But there will also be security updates and patches that you need. 'A new OS update incorporates security patches and better data protection, which also improves user data stored within the app.'
But while updating third-party apps is fairly obvious, you also need to update stock Google apps on your phone and, just as critically, the background Play and other services that run your phone need to be updated. Open both Google's and Samsung's stores and check for updates. You'll also find services updates there.
There is a note of caution here. One recent background update that's causing controversy is Google's SafetyCore app. This was installed across Android's ecosystem some months ago without any notification or warning. It provides a content scanning capability that is run on-device and doesn't share data with Google or anyone else. Its first live application is scanning images for nudity within Google Messages, whether those are being sent or received. It's on by default for minors and off for adults.
You can find details on disabling this photo scanning and uninstalling SafetyCore here. It's likely to be reinstalled with future Play Services updates though, so check regularly if you do decide you don't want it on your phone.
Per SammyFans, here are step-by-step instructions on updating your apps:
"Google Play
Galaxy Store
Just as you finally get Android 15, its successor Android 16 has reached Beta 4. This is due for a stable release in the summer, likely July, and the question now is how much longer will Samsung owners wait behind Pixels for the upgrade. If you have a Galaxy S25 you should certainly expect a fast update. That has now become critical.

I started wearing my Pixel Buds 2 Pro to concerts and shows — and my weird experiment is already paying off

I've been doing something new this summer that I haven't before: being hired as a concert videographer. Nearly every weekend so far this summer, I've been shooting videos for different festivals where performers are blasting their deafening music — which obviously got irritating for me since I was up front to capture all the action. I was only able to endure about 15 minutes being in that general vicinity because my hearing got all irritated from all the loud sound. That's when I realized I had my pair of Google Buds Pro 2 on me, so without hesitation I put them on. Let me tell you, it was such a relief. Sure, I might've looked weird mixing in with the crowd at some point, but this crazy experiment ended up paying off in a big way. Better yet, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also $40 off at the moment You'll end up paying only $189 for the Google's earbuds, down from the normal $229 you'd have to pay. Google's Pixel Buds Pro 2 are improved in almost every way imaginable. Not only are they much more compact and lighter, but they have improved noise cancellation as well to mitigate ambient noise. There's also a transparency mode that allows you to hear more of the world around you when you need it. Price check: $189 @ Best Buy The reason why I put on my Pixel Buds 2 Pro is to save my poor ears from being obliterated by the deafening music. There are times when I'm literally in front of the speakers taking in their full force, but enabling the noise cancelling feature on the earbuds absolutely mitigates the harshness of the sounds. Similar to how effective the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are at toning down the screeches I hear on some of my subway rides to work, the earbuds also manage to tone down the intensity of the sounds from all the speakers before they hit my inner ear. While noise cancellation doesn't negate all of the sound, it's still better than just having my ears exposed to all the unadulterated sound from the speakers. I'm able to record videos of the performers without worrying too much about the noise. While the Pixel Buds Pro 2 works great at minimizing the noise around me, I can still hear the rumble of the bass pound my chest when I'm close to the speakers. I don't mind this at all, since I'm more concerned about potential hearing damage. Many experts suggest wearing dedicated earplugs that specifically reduce the intensity of sound, like the Loop Experience 2 earplugs, and studies have shown how effective they are in preventing noise-induced hearing loss. But of course, you'll have to remember to bring them with you every time. They're cheaper, so I would recommend buying a pair ahead of time. I wasn't anticipating any of this when I signed up to be the official videographer, but I can tell you how clutch it was having the Pixel Buds Pro 2 on me. Best of all, they stayed secure for the entire 5 hours I was there recording the concert. Since I had such a positive experience using my Pixel Buds Pro 2, I ended up using them over and over again for subsequent shows. They're now a permanent fixture in my arsenal of gear. Flight Deals is Google's new, AI-powered travel search tool

The AI-ification of Google seemingly knows no bounds, and now it wants you to turn to AI for booking flights, too. Rolling out in the US, Canada and India over the next week, Flight Deals lives within Google Flights, and is designed for "flexible travelers whose number one goal is saving money on their next trip." Rather than going through the usual process of manually selecting dates, times and destinations, you just tell the AI-powered assistant your travel intentions using natural language prompts. It'll then pull through the best deals it can find, paying attention to any additional information you provide. Flight Deals leverages real-time Google Flights data to ensure you're always shown up-to-date flights and deals from various airlines and booking operators. Google says the tool is first launching in beta and will use feedback from users to improve its capabilities over time. The company plans to add an option to exclude basic economy fares in the US and Canada, for example. To use the optional AI deal-hunter, you can either head to the dedicated Flight Deals page or select it from the top-left drop-down menu on Google Flights.

Google Will Now Blur Nude Photos in Your Messages. Here's How to Turn It On (or Off)

Some Android users are starting to see blurred images on their devices while using Google Messages. It's part of a Sensitive Content Warning system announced last year that is now rolling out on Android devices that obscures images containing suspected nudity. In a Help Center post, Google explains that when the feature is turned on, these warnings can detect and blur images with nudity and generate a warning when one is being received, sent or forwarded. "All detection and blurring of nude images happens on the device. This feature doesn't send detected nude images to Google," the company says in its post. Resources on how to deal with nude images are also offered with these warnings. It's possible, Google said, that images not containing nudity may be accidentally flagged. For adults, the feature is not enabled by default. For teens aged 13-17, it can be disabled in Google Account settings. For those on supervised accounts, it can't be disabled, but the settings can be adjusted by parents with in the Google Family Link app. How to enable or disable the feature For adults who do want to get a heads up on nude photos, or those seeking to disable it, the toggle switch is under Google Messages Settings / Protection & Safety / Manage sensitive content warnings / Warnings in Google Messages. The nude content feature is part of SafetyCore on Android 9 plus devices that also includes features Google has been working on to protect against scams via texts and dangerous links and to verify contacts.
