Connections looking to to see the real Falakeyah next time out
Having bolted up on her Wolverhampton debut in November, the Owen Burrows-trained filly looked every inch a top-class performer in the making when running away with Newmarket's Pretty Polly Stakes on her return to action in the spring.
After sidestepping the Oaks at Epsom and being ruled out of the French equivalent, Falakeyah dropped back to a mile for the Coronation Stakes, but ended up racing too enthusiastically for her own good on the front end before weakening in the home straight.
Angus Gold, racing manager for owners Shadwell, said: 'It was a pity, as I was very pleased with her before the race. She settled beforehand, I thought, she was good and calm in the ring and Jim (Crowley) said she went down brilliantly relaxed.
'I've only seen the replay once, but it looked to me like for the first 50 or 60 yards of the race she was OK and then when Hollie (Doyle, riding Duty First) came upsides her she just put her head in the air and took off basically. It just set her alight and that was it.
'On a hot day like that, she was never going to be able to keep going at that pace, so we'll just give her a bit of time. We didn't learn anything regarding distance or anything like that, all we learnt was she's not going to win races if she races like that.'
He added: 'We know she's considerably better than that, her work at home is very high class and that run didn't bare any resemblance to her work at home. We'll obviously have to try to settle her next time and maybe we'll have a look at something like the Nassau. We'll just see how everyone feels nearer the time.
'At home she settles beautifully and is quite happy to take a lead and doesn't fight the jockey, so we've just got to get her to do that on the racecourse if she's going to have any chance of finishing off her races.'

David Bentley recounted his experience of witnessing what he described as the best fight he saw on the training ground between ex-Arsenal defenders Kolo Toure and Pascal Cygan David Bentley revealed that nobody at Arsenal could break up a savage training-ground scrap between Kolo Toure and Pascal Cygan, who fought like "animals". The former footballer began his career with the north London side but made just nine appearances before he was sold to Blackburn Rovers in 2006. While he featured just once in the Gunners' Invincible Premier League season, Bentley was part of the first-team squad and was entrenched in the intense atmosphere that existed within Arsene Wenger's team. Intense may be an understatement given the ex-Tottenham Hotspur star's recollection of just how competitive things were in training, admitting he was at times left bruised and bloodied. Speaking on the Undr The Cosh podcast, Bentley rattled off a list of the uber-tough characters that were in the Arsenal dressing room at the time. "Everyday was a fight," he said. You got Ray Parlour, loves it, lunatic. "You got Martin Keown, Bergkamp's an animal. [He] kicked the c*** out of everyone. Van Bronckhorst. I came out with black eyes. I used to play up against him, used to elbow the life out of me. I had bloodied eyes." Bentley added: "Pascal Cygan and Kolo Toure, the best fight I've ever seen on the training ground. Two animals going at it. The whole team tried to break it up; it was hard to break it up." Despite being just 19 years of age during Arsenal's title triumph, Bentley wasn't afraid to stand up for himself and said he even confronted Thierry Henry. "I squared up to Thierry Henry, whipped off my gloves, 'Come on, let's have it'. "The coaching staff used to put on seven-a-sides every day. The dressing room was more concerned about winning the seven-a-side tournaments than the game on Sunday." His bravado and cheeky personality, however, once saw him face the wrath of then-captain Patrick Vieira after playing a joke on the Frenchman. "We used to go to Austria to this training camp where they always wanted to go up in the mountains, out the way," he said on the podcast. "And I had no idea, it was my first time. We've come down for breakfast, and what happened at Arsenal – it probably happens everywhere – was you had a French table, the English table, everybody used to kind of sit with people they get on with. "I've come down, me being me, I'm just wanting to be friends with everyone. I think I'm mates with everyone. French tables there, I think there's [Sylvain] Wiltord, [Robert] Pires and whoever. And there's a seat and I went, 'I'm sitting there.' So I've stepped in, and I've sat down and I went, 'Morning lads, you alright?' You know, 'What you up to last night? Have a good w***?' And all that, trying to be their mate. "And cause I don't like silence as well, I thought they can do that can't they? Be all calm. And as I've sat there, I've looked around and these lot are smirking. I'm going, 'They're on me here, I'm going to have to back myself up. They're mugging me off.' "And I just got a big slap, and I'm sat and I've looked up and Patrick, club captain... 'Get out my seat. You're in my seat.' And do you know when you're like, 'Ah f***, I'm red.' In that moment, I thought, 'If I say yes, I'm going to look like a right mug, and if I say no, I'm going to look like a right mug. I can't win.' So I went with the option of, 'No.'" While he admitted the pair are now friends more than 20 years on, there was an immediate punishment doled out to Bentley for his antics. "But for three, four months, I wasn't allowed to go on lads' nights out," he said. "I was kicked... honestly, every training session he'd snap me. I used to love it, I used to play with it. I used to go, 'Patrick, where we going tonight son?!' I think I turned up a couple of times, 'I know I'm not invited, but shut up!'"

Chelsea respond to West Ham's £42m bid for midfielder after Arsenal approach
West Ham have submitted a £42m transfer bid for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, according to reports. Graham Potter is desperate to strengthen his Hammers squad before the transfer deadline, especially after West Ham lost 3-0 to newly-promoted Sunderland on the opening day. Brazil international Santos, who Chelsea signed in 2023, has emerged as a target for the east London outfit. South American football experts Vene Casagrande and Eduardo Burgos say West Ham submitted a bid worth £42m for the 21-year-old. Speaking back in May, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly appeared to rule out a summer move for Santos, who was signed from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama. 'We're going to the Club World Cup so, right now, we're laser-focused on the Club World Cup,' Boehly said. 'We have some players that are joining us for the Club World Cup that weren't on the team. 'Andrey Santos is coming from Strasbourg. We're really excited about him and what we think he can add to the squad.' Santos made four appearances for Chelsea at the Club World Cup but largely featured off the bench. During the tournament, which of course Chelsea won, manager Enzo Maresca warned the youngster was still not ready and needed more time to 'understand' how the Blues are set up. 'He's working well, but he needs to understand how we play,' Maresca said following a group-stage win. 'It's the same for all of the new ones. It's important for them to continue in the way they are working to get opportunities.' As Santos attracted attention from rival clubs earlier in the summer, Chelsea were said to have placed a £50m price-tag on his head. The Blues are keen to offload a number of players before the transfer window closes but their focus currently is finding new clubs for Christopher Nkunku and potentially Nicolas Jackson. Speaking in June, Santos insisted he 'loved' Chelsea and was desperate to make it at Stamford Bridge. 'The only conversation I had was that I would play in the Club World Cup for Chelsea and after that we'll see what happens,' he told the Daily Mail. 'Everyone knows about my love, my desire to play for Chelsea. I think Enzo Maresca was very sincere with me, and I liked that sincerity. 'Also, when you look someone in the eye, when you're sincere, you build trust with the player. 'So I accepted that and went to Strasbourg to get minutes. And now, God willing, we'll see how it goes at the Club World Cup. I hope everything goes well.' West Ham will look to accelerate their transfer efforts after suffering a demoralising 3-0 defeat to Premier League new-boys Sunderland on the opening weekend. Speaking after the loss at the Stadium of Light, Potter said: 'The result is obviously bad for us, and the second half was really disappointing. 'In the first half, I thought we were good. I thought we did lots well in terms of quieting the crowd down and creating some opportunities. We could have scored, I thought, but nevertheless, we felt OK. Guardiola says one win does not signal that "City are back"
WOLVERHAMPTON, England, Aug 16 (Reuters) - The several thousand Manchester City fans who travelled to Molineux on Saturday sang "City are back" as Pep Guardiola's men kicked off their season with a thorough 4-0 Premier League thrashing of Wolverhampton Wanderers. But Guardiola, whose once-mighty team stormed to four consecutive league titles before last season's shocking third-place finish, pleaded patience, saying that one win meant little. "The start is a good result, (but) no more than last season. Last season we started against Chelsea, 2-0 (win), and look what happened later," Guardiola told Sky Sports. "Last season also, we started with hunger and energy," he added. "We see just the first game. So many, many points are still to play (for)." Revamped City are playing their first season in 10 without midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, while Rodri is sidelined with an injury, Jack Grealish left last week for Everton on a loan deal and goalkeeper Ederson, who is rumoured to be on the move to Turkey, missed Saturday's game with what the club said was an illness. Guardiola was thrilled with his summer signings, however, as Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both scored and goalkeeper James Trafford was solid in net in a tantalizing hint of what could be an entertaining season to come. "Tijjani is an exceptional player, one of the best players from Serie A. He has an unbelievable rhythm," Guardiola said. "The new players have come and we've got a bigger squad, so we'll have to see what happens. We'll have to use the squad because it'll be difficult to sustain the vibe of the team." Guardiola said his squad was too big. "Too many people," he said. "It's not about Eddy (Ederson), today (there) was no Rodri, Phil (Foden), (Mateo) Kovacic, Savinho and Josko (Gvardiol). On the bench we had Nathan (Ake) and Gundo (Ilkay Gundogan). "I like a deep squad to compete in all competitions but I don't want to leave players at home. It's not healthy. You cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. "The club has known it since last season but the situation is what it is. In the next two weeks, people will talk with players and agents to find a solution. We have to reduce the squad because it will be difficult to sustain the vibe of the team."
