Marlins top Giants 12-5 to complete series sweep
Kyle Stowers and Agustín Ramírez each homered and the Miami Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 12-5 on Thursday to complete a three-game series sweep.
Xavier Edwards had a two-run double for Miami, which has won four straight overall, five of six, and six straight on the road.
Rafael Devers had three hits including a homer and a double for San Francisco, which has lost eight of its last 11.
Devers' homer was his 17th and his second in nine games since being acquired by San Francisco last week.
The Marlins broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Eric Wagaman's two-run double in a three-run inning.
Stowers hit a three-run homer in the first and Ramírez hit a two-run shot in the third — both off Giants starter Hayden Birdsong — to give Miami a 5-0 lead.
Devers hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and the Giants tied it in the fourth when June Hoo Lee's leadoff triple keyed a three-run inning.
Birdsong (3-2) allowed seven runs and four hits with four walks in four-plus innings.
Josh Simpson (1-0) got the last out of the fourth after Janson Junk allowed five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Key moment
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough was ejected after umpires warned both benches in the top of the first after Miami shortstop Otto Lopez was hit by a pitch. The warnings followed three Giants players being struck by pitches Wednesday night in a 10-inning 8-5 loss to Miami.
Key stat
Devers got his 700th career RBI.
Up next
Marlins RHP Eury Pérez (0-2, 6.17 ERA) will pitch the series opener Friday night against the Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (7-3, 3.39) in Arizona. Giants RHP Landen Roupp (5-5, 3.67) will pitch for the Giants against the White Sox RHP Aaron Civale (1-4, 5.03) in Chicago.

Dolphins duo among CBS' top 100 players entering 2025 NFL season
Miami is looking to bounce back from an 8-9 finish a season ago that left the Dolphins outside the NFL playoffs after consecutive trips in the two seasons beforehand. As the Dolphins look to author a bounce-back campaign, Miami needs its stars to be the best versions of themselves. In CBS' annual look at the NFL's top 100 players, the Dolphins boast a duo among that group headed into the 2025 season. There's just one problem for Miami: One of its biggest stars is likely on his way out in short order. Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was ranked as the league's No. 30 player, while cornerback Jalen Ramsey checked in as the No. 99 player in the NFL. Both players suffered significant drops in the rankings as compared to this time last year. Hill fell from No. 4 to No. 30, while Ramsey dipped from No. 43 to No. 99. Here's what CBS had to say about both: No. 30: Tyreek Hill, WR After two dominant seasons with the Dolphins, Hill's numbers were down in 2024. There were a lot of reasons, but he wasn't the same player. He had just 81 catches with six touchdowns. This is a big year for him. No. 99: Jalen Ramsey, CB Ramsey's play has definitely tailed off some from his best years, but he still deserves a spot on this list. Where he plays this season remains a mystery since he will be traded. But he can still help a team with secondary needs. But is he worth salary? - Pete Prisco, CBS. Trade speculation continues to swirl around Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey and it still appears as though it's just a matter of time before Ramsey heads back to the West Coast. Hill recently said publicly that he's going to put the full court press on a Ramsey return to South Florida. Time will tell whether or not that can indeed be effective. In the meantime, CBS' top 100 illustrates the importance of Hill on the Dolphins' 2025 fortunes in particular. Miami needs Hill to recapture the type of playmaking magic he authored during the 2022 and 2023 seasons when he notched back-to-back 1,700-yard receiving seasons. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles led the way in CBS' top 100 player rankings with 10, while the Detroit Lions had eight players on the list.

Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the Giants' ballpark, team CEO says
Barry Bonds will be getting a statue outside the San Francisco Giants' home stadium where he set baseball's career home run record, the team's CEO said Thursday. Giants President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer was asked during a radio interview about a statue for Bonds, and he responded that it was 'on the radar.' But Baer didn't have any details of when that would happen. 'Barry is certainly deserving of a statue, and I would say should be next up,' Baer said during an appearance on San Francisco's 95.7 The Game. 'We don't have the exact location and the exact date and the exact timing (…) It's coming. All I can say is it's coming.' Bonds played for San Francisco the last 15 of his 22 big league seasons, hitting 586 of his 762 homers while with the Giants from 1993-2007. He set the single-season MLB record with 73 homers in 2001, and hit his record-breaking 756th homer to pass Hank Aaron in a home game off Washington's Mike Bacsik on August 7, 2007. There are currently five statues outside Oracle Park, those of Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry and Orlando Cepeda. The Giants retired Bonds' No. 25 jersey in 2018. Bonds, a seven-time MVP and 14-time All-Star, is not in the Hall of Fame. He failed to reach the 75% threshold required during his 10 years on the Baseball Writers Association of America's Hall of Fame ballot, mostly because of steroids allegations that dogged him during his final years with the Giants. The Contemporary Player Committee also passed on electing Bonds in 2022, though the committee could reconsider Bonds' status.

Bernardo Silva says City's improvement is ‘a good sign for next season'
Bernardo Silva felt Manchester City delivered a statement performance as they thrashed Juventus in the Club World Cup on Thursday. The Premier League side produced one of their best displays for some time as they ran out 5-2 winners in Orlando to secure top spot in Group G. Advertisement After an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign, it was a result that indicated their recent frustrations could be behind them and underlined their credentials to win the tournament. They will now return to the Camping World Stadium to face Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal for a place in the quarter-finals on Monday (Tuesday 2am UK). Silva, the new City captain, said: 'We've always been potential winners in all competitions that we play. 'Obviously it's just one game but we're happy that the performance was the way it was. 'It shows that we're improving, we're coming back to the levels and to the standards that we got people used to at this club. That's good. Advertisement 'That's a good sign for next season. It's not only for this competition, but we want to build to the whole season, to the whole year, because what happened last year was quite disappointing for all of us. 'We want to change, we want to be better. This was a great performance and it shows that we can do it again.' Haaland's goal was his 300th in senior football (John Raoux/AP) City had gone into the game trailing Juventus on goals scored and needing to win to secure the theoretically easier route through the knockout stages. What they produced rendered their frustration to score a seventh goal against Al Ain in their previous game irrelevant. Jeremy Doku's early strike was cancelled out when Teun Koopmeiners pounced on an Ederson mistake but an own goal from Pierre Kalulu restored City's lead. Advertisement Erling Haaland – with his 300th career goal for club and country – added a third before Phil Foden and Savinho turned it into a rout. Dusan Vlahovic scored a late Juve consolation. City were beaten 2-0 by Juve in the Champions League during their worst spell of form last season but the team, rejuvenated by several new arrivals since, now look a different proposition. Silva said: 'We had a very good performance against a tough team. They showed that in the past, they beat us last season. 'We wanted to prove that what happened last season will not happen this season, hopefully.' Silva will captain City in the coming season (Bradley Collyer/AP) Silva was chosen as captain by Pep Guardiola after the City manager decided not to hold his usual squad vote this summer. Advertisement 'It's probably one of the biggest honours of my career,' the Portuguese said. 'I'm going to start my ninth season at the club. All that experience, I will try to pass it to the younger guys. 'But the leadership in a team, it's not about one guy. It's about each one of us being our own leader and helping the guy next to us in the dressing room. 'I will need that help to help the team achieve a lot of things and hopefully win titles.'
