Wimbledon Has Removed Line Judges But AI Can't Override Its DNA
Stefan Edberg won Wimbledon twice and understood that the tournament's DNA resonated beyond the tennis. 'For me, and most of the other players, too, if you had to pick one of the four Grand Slams, you would pick Wimbledon. It's got tradition, it's got atmosphere, and it's got mystique,' said the former World No. 1 in an interview with the Independent in 1996. Almost thirty years ago is eons in tennis technology.
Part of that mystique and atmosphere was the line judges in their resplendent All England Club apparel. When Hawk-Eye technology was introduced to the Championships for the first time in 2006, computerized ball-tracking was deemed necessary to minimize human error. For its 148th edition, the AELTC has introduced electronic line calling to replace all line judges following the Australian Open and the U.S. Open implementation in 2021 and 2022.
That sense of human interaction, surrounded by the force of nature that is grass has been central to Wimbledon's casting. This year's official poster offers the picture postcard of the English Garden; elegant, classy and other-worldly. The real Centre Court felt naked on Monday without those men and women marching to their official postings. Carlos Alcaraz looked lonely out there during his five-set fight against Fabio Fognini. The shouts of 'out' come from the staff at the grounds which at least gives some element of vocal recognition.
Frances Tiafoe lost to Britain's Cameron Norrie on Wednesday and misses the 'fanfare' that the juxtaposition of officials and technology brought. 'If I were to hit a serve on a big point, you go up with the challenge, is it in, is it out? The crowd is, like, 'ohhh'. There's none of that," said the American.
Lauren Pedersen, CEO of SportAI, a company that uses AI-powered sports technique evaluation, feels that technology doesn't have to mute the drama.
'For a sport like tennis, where so much of the detail is in the movement, the timing and the precision, technology can make those invisible elements visible,' says Pedersen, who used to play on the NCAA Division 1 circuit.
'AI tools like heatmaps, real-time analysis and swing comparisons can give viewers a clearer understanding of what's unfolding, without taking away from the thrill or emotion. It's not about replacing important traditions, but using tech to add new layers of meaning that enhance how we connect with the game."
Sometimes, Wimbledon's traditions have been turned over by the natural elements that are out of their hands. In 1991, the precious Middle Sunday had been a day of rest for 114 years until the British weather forced the club's hand. The gates were open to 'the most enthusiastic Centre Court crowd we've ever had,' according to the public address announcer.
'You don't often hear a soccer crowd at Wimbledon,' joked John McEnroe. A decade later, Goran Ivanisevic had his moment in front of a raucous 'People's Monday' crowd, the year that cellphones met the internet.
Things change, and new audiences are there to be won. As Roger Federer once said, 'The title doesn't come to you.' Wimbledon needs to advance with AI and authenticity hand in hand.
In the media huddle that preceded the opening Monday, current CEO Sally Bolton tackled the replacement of people with pinpoint pixels . 'Wimbledon has always balanced heritage and tradition with innovation. Line judges have been such an important part of the Championships for so many years and we will still have them around the ground as match assistants.'
LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 01: People dressed as line judges protest against the hawkeye camera ... More technology introduced this year for line calling on day two of The Championships Wimbledon 2025 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 01, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by)
Once upon a time, the clear message was that Wimbledon wouldn't move its product for anyone. The clash between the men's singles final and the 2018 FIFA World Cup final was just one of those occasions. Now, the AELTC is quite happy to move their 2 pm slot to 4 p.m. to reach out to a far wider global audience. Wimbledon stands alone as a unique Slam, but it cannot be an island either.
Technology connects continents. 'The goal is not to replace the human element, but to elevate it and make Wimbledon more engaging, transparent and accessible to audiences around the world, which is a clear priority of Wimbledon with moves like bringing The Hill to New Yorkers,' said Pedersen.
A traditional analog life is the old school way that still has authentic lessons. It just can't serve fast enough for modern tennis.
Wimbledon will stay white, retain The Queue and can serve strawberries and cream forever. Some things don't have to change.

Dillon Danis, Warren Spencer erupt over Misfits title bout: 'You're going to be taken out on a stretcher!'
Misfits Boxing is getting into the MMA game for its Aug. 30 event in Manchester, England. Before the headlining boxing bouts featuring ex-UFC stars Luke Rockhold, Darren Till and Tony Ferguson, Dillon Danis will return to action against Warren Spencer in a battle for the inaugural Misfits light heavyweight MMA title. It's been nearly two full years since Danis last competed in combat sports, coming up short in a boxing match against Logan Paul in October 2023, which ended a four-year hiatus from combat competition for the former Bellator MMA prospect. Danis went 2-0 in Bellator from 2018-19, however his upcoming match against Spencer marks his return to the sport for the first time in six years. Spencer, on the other hand, makes his MMA debut on Aug. 30 after starting his pro boxing career with a win in April. Calling in through Zoom to confront Danis on Tuesday's edition of "The Ariel Helwani Show," Warren revealed that he has no intentions of playing on the ground with the jiu-jitsu specialist. "I'd be stupid not to think that Dillon wasn't going to come and dive for my legs," Spencer said. "I think he's going to dive for my legs, I really do. I'm going to hit him with a big fresh one-two [combination] down the middle. He's going to go, 'Oh s***, this is real power,' and then he's going to dive for my legs and try and sniff my balls and tap me out. I'm not going to let him. I'm not going to let myself get my leg ripped off on live television or get strangled on live television. I'm tapping. "We're fighting for real. Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, flying dragon kick, or I'm tapping. ... You've shown the world now that when you've got nothing left — look at the Logan Paul fight, when there's nothing left, you die. You shoot for the legs and you die. When you know you've lost, you die." Never one to shy away from a verbal exchange, Danis quickly bantered back and forth with his upcoming opponent. Danis scored first-round submissions in his lone two MMA fights and advised Warren not to follow the footsteps of his previous foes. "I hope you tap quick because it's going to be a bad night," Danis responded. "You're not going to be able to walk. You're going to be taken out on a stretcher when your knees are mangled. "I'd fight you right now in this f***ing room, and I would whoop your ass 10 times out of 10. You don't understand it." Obviously, keeping the fight on the feet is the best path to victory for Spencer, as he admitted and desires. The Brit took it a step further, praising Danis and stating that there was no point in wasting his time learning jiu-jitsu ahead of the match. Before this fight came together, Danis was lined up to take on the aforementioned UFC veteran Ferguson in the now-defunct Global Fight League (GFL). Thanks to his brash, outspoken personality, Danis has previously found himself linked to much more experienced fighters than Spencer, and "The Mechanic" is aware of that. Therefore, he insists he's only trying to help Danis, to an extent. "I want to see Dillon come out and show everybody he's a well-rounded fighter," Spencer said. "He's calling out Jon Jones, all these big, crazy names. Look, you've got to get through 'The Mechanic' first. If you want to show everyone you're a well-rounded fighter and you want to show you can strike, then do it. "I'm going to make you richer. I'm going to give you a stepping stone to be a UFC legend, so you have to like me. Dillon's like my little stepson. What kind of father would I be if I wouldn't support my son?" Ultimately, Danis wasn't overly amused by Spencer's overtures and promised their upcoming fight would be his own return to the win column, while also keeping Danis undefeated in MMA. "It's going to be f***ed up when your stepson takes you down and puts you on your ass," Danis said.

Newcastle issues ruthless Alexander Isak response after statement totally blindsides club
Newcastle United has told Alexander Isak that he won't be leaving the club this summer after the striker broke his silence on social media and issued a statement. Isak has made it clear to Newcastle that he has no intention of playing for the club again and missed the season's opening game against Aston Villa. Due to uncertainty over his future, Isak has been training in isolation, but head coach Eddie Howe hopes the striker can be reintegrated into the squad. Howe's optimism has been supported by the club, which was blindsided on Tuesday when Isak released a statement on Instagram explaining his stance. Isak claimed that Newcastle lost his trust and said the relationship could not continue, but the club has clarified that he won't be sold this summer. READ MORE: Darwin Nunez shows his true colors after Liverpool transfer exit to Saudi Arabia READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak breaks silence, Newcastle response, Marc Guehi latest The Daily Mail reported Isak's statement caught the Newcastle hierarchy off guard, but the situation hasn't changed. Isak will be informed of the decision, leading to uncertainty over his role this season. Newcastle drew 0-0 against Villa on Saturday, as Anthony Gordon and new signing Anthony Elanga shared offensive duties in Isak's absence. Newcastle will face Liverpool on Monday, Isak's intended destination. Liverpool saw a $148 million bid rejected for Isak earlier this summer, and the club is prepared to submit a new offer. However, Newcastle will only entertain a sale if a suitable replacement can be signed before the end of the window. Newcastle has missed several targets this summer, with Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike opting to sign elsewhere. Liverpool signed Ekitike before the club attempted to lure Isak to Anfield. While Brentford striker Yoane Wissa remains heavily linked with Newcastle, and Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has been discussed, no marquee signings have been made in that position. Should that change, Isak may be granted his move, but Newcastle has stood firm after seeing his statement. Isak was named to the PFA Team of the Year on Tuesday but was absent from the awards ceremony. Shortly after his inclusion, Isak released a statement on social media, continuing to push for an immediate transfer. "I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25," Isak wrote. "First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. 'I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there. I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. "That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. "To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself."

Every word of Newcastle's lengthy Alexander Isak statement as Liverpool sent clear message
Newcastle United has issued a statement after Alexander Isak publicly expressed his desire to leave the club. The player has been informed that he won't be granted a summer transfer. Isak broke his silence on Tuesday after being named to the PFA Team of the Season, though he missed the awards ceremony due to his ongoing transfer saga. Isak claimed that he had been given false promises and lost trust, and suggested it was in everyone's best interests if he left the club immediately. Newcastle rejected a $148 million offer from Liverpool earlier this summer and was only open to a sale if certain conditions were met. The club was blindsided by Isak's statement and has expressed disappointment in his behaviour, reminding the player that he remains under contract. READ MORE: Darwin Nunez shows his true colors after Liverpool transfer exit to Saudi Arabia READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak breaks silence, Newcastle response, Marc Guehi latest "We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening," the statement read. "We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. "We do not foresee those conditions being met. "This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." More to follow...
