The Brief
The Shedd Aquarium's latest rescued sea otter has been named Jade after a public vote.
Jade is named for Jade Cove, near where she was rescued in California.
She's now exploring her new home in the Abbott Oceanarium as she continues to acclimate.
CHICAGO - The Shedd Aquarium's newest rescued sea otter now has a name: Jade.
What we know
The name Jade was selected through an onsite public vote, with aquarium visitors choosing from four options put together by the Shedd's animal care team.
The other options included:
Esa — a nod to the Endangered Species Act.
Marina — for the city where she was rescued.
Rey — a reference to the Monterey Bay area.
The winning name — Jade — honors Jade Cove, a scenic spot south of Monterey, California.
Dig deeper
Jade has officially made her public debut in the Shedd's Abbott Oceanarium, where she's now exploring the sea otter habitat and meeting fellow rescued otters, including Luna and Watson.
She continues to practice key skills such as diving, grooming, and foraging—behaviors she could one day teach future surrogate pups.
What they're saying
"Our animal care team is happy with how well she's acclimated, and we're having a lot of fun getting to know her; she is very inquisitive but also calm and confident," said Andrea Oake, manager of sea otters and sea lions at the Shedd.
What's next
Guests can now visit Jade at the Chicago aquarium.

Lewis Capaldi Met Justin Bieber at a Party and Totally Thought They Were Pals Until He Texted Him the Next Day: ‘Bieber Aired Me'

Lewis Capaldi has met plenty of famous people over the years and become friendly with a few of them. But in a chat with Capital Breakfast's Chris Stark on Friday (Aug. 15), the 'Someone You Loved' singer revealed that when he met Justin Bieber at a 'swanky' Los Angeles party thrown by Kylie Jenner (he thinks) a while back he was pretty sure the JB had no idea who he was. 'And Bieber comes over to me and he's like, 'Hey man what's going on?' And I'm like 'you don't know who I am, 'you don't know my name,'' Capaldi recalled telling him. 'And he's like, 'of course I do it's Lewis Capaldi' and me and Bieber have this super night, this really lovely evening together — we didn't spend the night together, but we hang out — and me and the Biebs are going to be best pals, this is huge.' So, Capaldi dutifully texted Bieber a 'sucking up his a–' message the next day: ''just wanted to jump on Bro, and say last night was so special, great guy, so nice to hang with you, such a dude' all this stuff,' he revealed. Here's the thing. According to Capaldi, Bieber liked the message, but then never replied. 'So if you're out there Bieber, text me back!,' Capaldi said, admitting, 'Bieber aired me.' Capaldi also uncovered the true story behind the legendary 'lost' song he recorded with Calvin Harris several years ago that has never been released. While Harris had hinted in interviews that it may have gotten accidentally erased from Capaldi's hard drive, Lewis said the real story is pretty simple: he didn't like how he sounded. 'Me and Calvin have done a song together, he was in Ibiza the same time as me. I went and recorded a version of it,' Capaldi said of the unnamed track. 'He sent it to me afterwards. I avoid any conflict, avoid letting people down, I'm a people pleaser. I try and please people… This is the thing, I don't like the song. I don't like my version of the song, I should say.' Capaldi said he shared the track with some friends and they agreed with his assessment, but Lewis never reached out to Harris to tell him his feelings about the song. 'He then messages me two months later like, 'hate it?' And I grew up idolizing Calvin Harris, and to tell him I don't like his song so I just ignored that as well,' Capaldi said. 'And to this day haven't replied to him, I have seen him since, and I'd love to do a Calvin Harris song, but he has to sing on it as well.' Sophie Ellis-Bextor On ‘Murder on the Dancefloor' Craze and Why It Was ‘Ballsy' To Name New Album ‘Perimenipop'

U.K. singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor is coming off a year in which she felt 'like after you have a glass of champagne and you're a bit heady.' After her 2001 disco-pop classic, 'Murder on the Dancefloor,' was revived by its use in 2023 black comedy Saltburn, the song once again became a global smash, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in the United States (peaking at No. 51) and matching its 25-year-old No. 2 peak in the United Kingdom. After spending a year flaunting her new commercial appeal — including on her first-ever U.S. tour — Ellis-Bextor returns with Perimenopop. Out Sept. 12, the album features 12 sparkling dancefloor jams as intoxicating, clever and honest as its title, as well as collaborators such as disco legend Nile Rodgers. What was the craziest moment from the entire 'Murder' revival? That's easy: It's definitely the fact that I've now done gigs in America. In the beginning of last year, I'd never done so much as a radio interview. I started those gigs thinking, 'Is this going to be a room full of people waiting for me to sing one song?' But I was met with a lot of people who clearly had been supporting what I'm up to from far away. I have to say, — album title of the year. How did you come up with it? For me and all my girlfriends in our mid-40s, there's a bit of a narrative about some aspects that might sound a bit gloomy. And I just wanted something that would flip the script on it a little bit — and also invite into the room the fact that I'm not the way I was when I was 20. I think it's also quite a good indicator of how much more ballsy I've gotten as I've gotten older. But how lucky am I that I've been able to have a career long enough to feel that comfortable? What was it like working with Nile Rodgers? To hear all the stories and just be imbued with someone [who] direct-line influenced and inspired me so much was really cool. I think my favorite bit was Nile talking about Madonna, and I said, 'Have you seen her recently?' He went, 'Yeah, we went roller skating together.' Are you liking what you're seeing from the rest of the U.K. pop world these days? What happened with Charli xcx and brat is obviously so brilliant. But also what I love about it is it really lets the mask fall. And I think teenage me would have completely resonated with that. We talked about a Brat Summer, and I think in my head I was like, 'Well, maybe Perimenopop is your autumn?' This story appears in the Aug. 16, 2025, issue of Billboard. It's The End Of An Era For YouTube's ‘Lofi Girl'

Jade of the Lofi Girl YouTube channel (art by Juan Pablo Machado) YouTube/Lofi Girl/Juan Pablo Machado YouTube's Lofi Girl, who stars in 'lofi hip radio beats to relax/study to' playlists and live streams, has officially graduated, after 8 years of a hectic study schedule. Lofi Girl (also known as Jade), the anime-inspired face of a French YouTube channel, has long been a comforting presence for those who require a bit of background noise to concentrate. On July 30, the official Lofi Girl account on TikTok posted a clip of Jade closing her laptop, dubbed with dialogue lifted from a sitcom that has become a popular TikTok meme: 'Finally finished with all my homework. I don't know what I learnt, but I know I'm done learning!' Commentators wished Jade well and offered their congratulations, while others wondered why Jade's send-off was drawn in a completely different art style to the original image. Many commentators wanted to know if the Lofi Girl 'study/relax' live streams had finally come to an end. Are YouTube's 'Lofi Girl' Study/Relax Live Streams Over? Turns out, fans had no reason to fear, as the Lofi Girl YouTube channel is still streaming 'lofi hip-hop radio beats to relax/study to,' with the reassuring presence of Jade still studying away, despite having graduated. Jade's 'graduation' isn't the first time that the Lofi Girl has taken a break from her studies. Back in 2020, when the Lofi Girl YouTube channel was known as Chilled Cow, Jade's long-running 'study/relax' live stream received a false copyright strike that broke the channel's 13,000-hour streak. After YouTube corrected the error, the live stream continued, and Jade went back to her books. A year later, Chilled Cow was renamed Lofi Girl, embracing Jade as the official mascot of the channel. Over the years, the Lofi Girl channel has become something of a hub for lonesome workers and students, with the live stream boasting a very active chat room. YouTube might be flooded with similar channels streaming background 'concentration' music, but something about Jade seems to draw listeners in—perhaps she's something of a digital body double. Where Did The Lofi Girl Come From? While Jade has become an internet icon and popular meme, her image is very much inspired by the Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart . Those 'study/relax' lo-fi streams originally featured a GIF of the Ghibli film's protagonist Shizuku Tsukishima, doing her homework, lifted directly from the film. Once the channel grew in popularity, a copyright takedown request from Studio Ghibli forced the channel to commission a similar image with an original character. Artist Juan Pablo Machado then created the now-iconic animation of the Lofi Girl, Jade, in 2018, adding a ginger cat and a city backdrop to the image. In the years since, the Studio Ghibli aesthetic has only grown more common, and has become associated with AI-generated imagery thanks to a popular ChatGPT filter, much to the dismay of animation fans. While Jade is officially graduated, but still studying, it remains to be seen if the channel will post another plot twist, adding to the lore of the Lofi Girl.
