MP's extradition plea after hit-and-run death
An MP has written to the Latvian ambassador to the UK to seek the extradition of a man suspected of killing a 12-year-old boy in a hit-and-run.
Keaton Slater died after being hit by a black BMW in Coventry while on his way home from school on 14 June last year.
Police believe Dolars Aleksanders, 21, who is wanted on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, is in Latvia.
Taiwo Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West, met with Keaton's parents on Tuesday to discuss road safety measures and the latest extradition efforts.
Louise and Clint Slater have been campaigning to have Mr Aleksanders extradited ever since he was named by police as a person of interest shortly after the crash last summer.
Their petition calling for him to return to the UK has received nearly 70,000 signatures.
Ms Owatemi, Labour, said she was hoping to meet with the Latvian ambassador Atis Lots to discuss an extradition agreement.
Ms Owatemi said that the extradition process was unlikely to take place at the moment because a treaty was never agreed between the two countries following Brexit.
But she said given the circumstances of a boy's death, the process "shouldn't be a political issue".
Otherwise, she said, it would send "the wrong message" over matters of justice and "that shouldn't be the case". She said authorities should be given the chance to engage with those suspected of offences.
She said she was "pleading to the ambassador to work with us".
Mr and Mrs Slater met the MP at a road safety event where they launched another petition calling for more road calming measures in the Radford area of Coventry where their son was hit.
Speaking at the meeting, Mrs Slater, said: "Nothing's happened since on road safety, so we just want to put a petition in place just to get more facilities to make people safer in this area.
"Ever since my son passed away, people are still getting hurt from being hit by cars.
"It's so frustrating because we don't want any family to go through what we went through - this nightmare for the rest of our lives."

Watch Me Whip rapper sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his cousin
Silentó, the rapper behind the 2015 viral hit 'Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),' has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the fatal 2021 shooting of his cousin. On Wednesday, the 27-year-old Atlanta-based artist, real name Ricky Hawk, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possessing a gun while committing a crime and concealing the death of another. As part of his plea deal, another murder charge was dropped. Silentó was 23 when he was arrested by DeKalb County police and charged with the murder of his 34-year-old cousin, Frederick Roots III, in January 2021. At the time, police responded to a report of a person shot outside a home in a suburban area near Decatur, Georgia. When they arrived, they found Roots bleeding heavily from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they found 10 bullet casings near Rooks's body, and security video from a nearby home showed a white BMW SUV speeding away shortly after the gunshots. A family member of Rooks told police that Silentó had picked up Rooks in a white BMW SUV, and GPS data and other cameras put the vehicle at the site of the shooting. Silentó confessed about 10 days later, after he was arrested, police said. Ballistics testing matched the bullet casings to a gun that Silentó had when he was arrested, authorities said. Rooks' brothers and sisters told DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Courtney L. Johnson before sentencing that Silentó should have gotten a longer sentence, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Silentó was a high school junior in suburban Atlanta in 2015 when he released 'Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)' and watched it skyrocket into a dance craze. Silentó made multiple other albums, but said in an interview with the medical talk show The Doctors in 2019 that he struggled with depression and had grown up in a family where he witnessed mental illness and violence. 'I've been fighting demons my whole life, my whole life,' he said in 2019. 'Depression doesn't leave you when you become famous, it just adds more pressure,' Silentó said then, urging others to get help. 'And while everybody's looking at you, they're also judging you.' He added: 'I don't know if I can truly be happy, I don't know if these demons will ever go away.' Silentó had been struggling with his mental health in the months before the arrest. His publicist, Chanel Hudson, has said he had tried to kill himself in 2020. Grammy award-winning Christian rock singer Michael Tait admitted the drug abuse and sexual assault accusations against him are 'mostly true,' in his first public comments since the bombshell claims surfaced. Tait, the former frontman for Newsboys and DC Talk, said he was living a double life as he allegedly abused hardcore substances with younger men before making unwanted advances toward them, according to Christian media outlet The Roys Report. Shops found to be flouting single-use vape ban
Nearly two weeks on from a ban on the sale of single-use disposable vapes in the UK, many shops have been found still to be openly selling the illicit items. Almost half of the 21 stores which an undercover BBC reporter visited in cities in Yorkshire continued to sell the vapes as though there had been no law change. Single-use vapes, in their bright-coloured packaging and variety of fruity flavours, had been a "key driver behind the alarming rise in youth vaping", the previous government had said as it first set its sights on a ban. The Labour administration followed through, with the disposables officially banned from sale from 1 June this year - the aim being to protect children's health and reduce damage to the environment. Since the introduction of the ban, anybody selling the illicit items risks a £200 fine, with repeat offenders facing the prospect of jail. But our undercover investigation has revealed that while some shop owners in Sheffield, Bradford, York and Leeds have been found to be following the new rules, others are turning a blind eye. In some shops we visited in Yorkshire, the colourful packaging of single-use vapes was still very much visible on the shelves. Shopkeepers in those premises seemed happy to offer them to customers, and many were even selling them at a reduced price. One shopkeeper I spoke to told me he knew he was breaking the law by selling the single-use disposable vapes, but he added that he wanted to sell his remaining stock at a discount. "It's banned," he said, pointing at the stack of vapes in his shop window. "I'm not allowed to sell them. I'm finishing. I don't have a lot, so I'm just trying to [get rid of them]." This was despite the ban on such vapes having been announced in October last year. That gave stores more than seven months to get rid of the disposable vapes they still had in stockrooms and on the shelves before the ban came into force in June. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said before the ban that vape usage in England had grown by more than 400% between 2012 and 2023, with about 9% of people now buying and using the products. Single-use disposable vapes helped get children hooked on nicotine and blighted high streets with waste, according to the government. "It's why we've taken tough action and banned them," a Defra spokesperson said. Flouting that ban, another shopkeeper asked me if I wanted a "good deal" and offered to sell me an armful of the illicit vapes for £20, showing me a pick-and-mix of fruity flavours in the store's glass cabinet. However, as part of our investigation in cities across Yorkshire to find out where such vapes were still being sold, we also visited traders regulated by North Yorkshire Council's Trading Standards team. Both shop workers approached by our undercover reporter there refused to sell the now-illegal items. Councillor Greg White, North Yorkshire Council's executive member for environment, said it was "disappointing" to see shops in other parts of Yorkshire were still prepared to break the law. "There's been plenty of time to prepare and to try to get people to move from disposable vapes to reusable ones, and that would have been good for their business," he explained. A Defra spokesperson said: "Rogue traders will face serious penalties, up to and including criminal prosecution."
