Few sectors are witnessing AI's disruptive power as dramatically as healthcare. Trained on millions of historical patient records, advanced AI models are now matching—and in some cases surpassing—human expertise.
With real-time analysis across medical histories, imaging, and genetic profiles, AI transforms clinical complexity into diagnostic clarity. AI spots patterns even seasoned physicians might overlook.
Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled a platform–Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO)—that can diagnose medical cases with an accuracy rate of up to 85.5%, far exceeding the 20% accuracy of experienced physicians under the same conditions. Mint explains the role and impact of AI in healthcare and diagnostics.
Does Microsoft's MAI-DxO improve diagnostic accuracy?
MAI-DxO leverages vast datasets, advanced probabilistic reasoning, and continuous learning from clinical cases to surpass human diagnostic accuracy. Unlike doctors who rely on experience and pattern recognition, MAI-DxO evaluates multiple variables simultaneously—lab results, symptoms, imaging—and predicts outcomes.
MAI‑DxO was tested on 304 real-world clinical scenarios sourced from the New England Journal of Medicine. In these cases, MAI‑DxO achieved an accuracy rate of 85.5%, surpassing the average 20% success rate of 21 experienced physicians from the UK and the US.
Instead of relying on a single model, MAI-DxO coordinates multiple large language models (LLMs) that interact like a team of doctors, reviewing, challenging, and refining each other's suggestions before settling on a final diagnosis.
Microsoft has emphasised that the tool is not designed to replace doctors, but to work alongside them.
What medical datasets does MAI-DxO use?
MAI-DxO is trained on anonymised patient records, peer-reviewed literature, medical guidelines and global clinical datasets from hospitals and research institutions.
Its database spans symptoms, biomarkers, comorbidities, and disease trajectories across demographics, allowing it to contextualize findings in real-world scenarios.
So if a patient suddenly feels numbness on her left side, it could indicate stroke, nerve damage, heart problem or some other issue. Doctors will wait for test results (blood and scans) to diagnose the problem, while the AI platform will interpret it faster, helping the doctor make quicker decisions.
MAI-DXO's strength lies in its ability to absorb medical nuance across specialties—mirroring the cumulative expertise of several doctors and researchers.
Will AI replace doctors?
AI will not replace but complement doctors and other health professionals. They need to navigate ambiguity and build trust with patients. Clinical roles will evolve with AI, giving medical staff the ability to automate routine tasks, identify diseases earlier, personalize treatment plans, and potentially prevent some diseases altogether.
For consumers, they will provide better tools for self-management and shared decision-making. These will be particularly helpful in remote areas where there's a shortage of doctors.
MAI-DxO operates on statistical inference rather than intuition. It learns to recognise patterns and contextual subtleties from data, simulating judgment. While human intuition draws on tacit knowledge—emotion, empathy, gut feel—AI taps structured data and outcome probabilities.
Platforms like MAI-DxO can augment decision-making. These are especially useful when doctors second-guess themselves—making MAI-DxO an ally, not a rival.
What risks do AI-driven diagnostics pose for patient care?
Key risks include overreliance, bias from skewed training data, and lack of transparency in AI reasoning. If doctors defer judgment too easily, subtle clinical clues could be overlooked. Additionally, AI platforms recommendations may vary based on demographics or comorbidities not well represented in its training data, potentially exacerbating health disparities.
For instance, if they are trained only on American or European patient data, they might overlook or misinterpret common conditions among patients in South Asia, say tuberculosis (TB) or type 2 diabetes or complications caused by chewing tobacco.
There's also the risk of false positives and patient anxiety. Most critically, AI tools must be accountable — patients need clarity on how diagnoses are made. The challenge lies in integrating AI without ignoring the human touch in care.
What are the regulatory frameworks for AI deployment in hospitals?
In India, every AI tool must be approved by the Delhi-based Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO)— equivalent to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Globally, regulatory bodies like the FDA (US), European Medicines Agency (EMA-Europe) are developing guidelines for AI in medicine.
Back home, AI platforms need clearance as a software as a medical device (SaMD), requiring evidence of clinical safety, efficacy, and data privacy compliance.
What is the role of AI in the future of medicine?
Current developments position them as early warning systems, helping doctors rather than making final decisions. According to the World Economic Forum 4.5 billion people are currently without access to essential healthcare services and a health worker shortage of 11 million is expected by 2030. AI has the potential to help bridge that gap.
AI can also assist paramedics in situations where a patient is being transferred via an ambulance. AI models trained on factors such as a patient's mobility, pulse and blood oxygen levels, chest pain, etc., can relay information to doctors, helping them make decisions faster.
AI can detect early signs in an individual that are likely to result in diseases like Alzheimer's, heart disease, kidney disease, and so on. This could help doctors suggest preventive action.
Can MAI-DxO evolve into a real-time medical assistant across specialties?
At present, MAI-DxO is a demonstration of AI capability and research. With real-time access to patient records, labs, and imaging, MAI-DxO could become an assistant, offering diagnostic suggestions, tracking progress, and alerting doctors to anomalies as they emerge.
Integrated into electronic health systems, it could support rounds, triage, and even remote consultations. Much like AI embedded medical devices (ultrasound devices, bedside X-ray machines) are now being used in some hospitals, including Max healthcare, to interpret scans and assist doctors. The key lies in continual updates, feedback loops and building trust.

NEW DELHI: Air India has begun conducting 'online yoga' classes for its crew members, including pilots who have been under severe psychological stress post the June 12 Ahmedabad crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had soon after that accident directed major Indian carriers to hold post trauma mental health workshop for their flight crew. AI had reported a 'minor increase' in sick leaves by pilots after AI 171 crash, with 112 reporting sick on June 16. In a recent mail to crew members, AI's safety head Captain Henry Donohoe said: '(AI's wellness app) offers a comprehensive suite of physical and emotional well-being support programmes. These include professional counselling sessions, online yoga classes, guided care circles and reflection sessions. In addition, we encourage you to explore self-care app which provides a wide range of mental health resources, including personalised plans and sessions tailored to individual needs. This should immediately change,' said multiple pilots. With rosters on the app, crew members say they have no way to prove that the app earlier had a different flight marked for them which has now been changed. Refusing to operate as per the constantly being updated app-based rostering has consequences. This despite the fact that DGCA after the Ahmedabad crash had directed major airlines 'not to push' crew to come to work if they are not feeling upto it to operate a flight. The reason: Mental health affects physical health, which in turn affects the ability to operate flights safely. In fact, a majority of DGCA notices to AI have been regarding crew scheduling by the airline. AI pilots want weekly off to be given once a week instead of being given after 168 hours or on the eighth day. 'There is no emotional quotient in AI as of now. Everything is app and mail-based. Even for online yoga, there's an app. The stress level is very high in the airline and there's no real support at this difficult time,' said pilots. 'AI has been putting crew members on standby duty whenever it wants, thereby inducing more stress among pilots even though there are required number of standby crew when the flight programme is published. Then there are continuing pay issues with the fix pay being reduced to 40 hours from 70 earlier by only one of them. Our weekly offs are not printed on the rosters. As it is this was causing both mental and financial stress among pilots. The crash has made things even worse,' they said. How big tech plans to feed AI's voracious appetite for power

America's tech giants are masters of the digital realm. Yet as they bet stupendous sums on artificial intelligence (ai), their ambitions are facing constraints in the physical world. Shortages of chips and data-centre equipment such as transformers and switching gear mean soaring prices and lengthy waits. Just as pressing is access to energy as utilities struggle to match the demands of Silicon Valley. On July 24th President Donald Trump published an 'ai action plan' which describes America's stagnating energy capacity as a threat to the country's 'ai dominance'. How is big tech coping with a worsening power crunch? Demand is rocketing thanks to ever more ambitious AI plans by the hyperscalers—Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta—all of which rely on data centres to run their services. On July 23rd Alphabet, the owner of Google, said it would increase its capital spending for 2025 by $10bn to $85bn, taking the expected combined total for the hyperscalers to $322bn this year, up from $125bn four years ago as they splash out on bigger and more power-hungry data centres (see chart 1). Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's boss, recently unveiled project Prometheus, a cluster of such centres in Louisiana covering an area almost the size of Manhattan. Chart New facilities consume more electricity than ever. A rack of servers stuffed with AI chips requires about ten times more power than a non-ai version a few years ago. A study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that in 2023 America's data centres used 176 terawatt-hours (twh) of electricity. That is forecast to increase to between 325twh and 580twh by 2028 (see chart 2), or 7-12% of America's total consumption, with hyperscalers accounting for about half. The situation is further complicated by the shifting requirements of ai. Most of the computing power now trains AI models. As the technology is adopted more widely, more of it will be used for 'inference', when an ai system responds to a query. To speed up responses many in the industry argue that inference data centres need to be near where people are using the software. But available land and power is even harder to find near cities. Faced with a power shortage, America's tech giants are turning to 'less than ideal places', says a former executive. Many of the preferred places such as North Virginia, with favourable tax regimes and proximity to high-capacity fibre-optic cables that ferry data around, are already overloaded with data centres. Yet even the new spots, such as Hillsboro, Oregon, and Columbus, Ohio, are becoming 'capped out', explains Pat Lynch, of CBRE, a property firm. Vacancies are near an all-time low and centres due for completion in 2028 are already fully booked. Another strategy is to team up with smaller rivals. In June Google announced that it would rent data-centre capacity from CoreWeave, an ai cloud provider which has already signed a similar five-year $10bn leasing deal with Microsoft. Part of the capacity for such 'neoclouds' comes from repurposing facilities once used to mine cryptocurrencies. Tech firms are also scouring the land for fresh sources of power. Amazon Web Services planned to buy and develop a nuclear-powered data centre from Talen Energy, an electricity generator. The deal was blocked by regulators for fear of raising locals' bills. On July 15th Google announced a $3bn deal for hydro-power from a dam in Pennsylvania. Hyperscalers are also playing more of a role in directly commissioning power projects. That not only includes striking deals directly with power firms but building generation capacity at data centres, to reduce reliance on grid connections. A survey by Bloom Energy, a power provider, finds that data-centre bosses expect that 27% of facilities will have onsite power by 2030, whereas last year that share was only 1%. Google signed a $20bn deal in December with Intersect Power, a developer, to build a data centre and solar farm with battery storage. Some of the power for Meta's Prometheus project will come from natural gas extracted at the location. The hyperscalers' desperation is helping cultivate novel sources of generation. Google has an agreement with Kairos Power, a startup developing small-modular reactors (SMRs), to provide nuclear power from 2030. Amazon has invested in X-energy, another SMR startup. Google and Meta have signed deals for geothermal energy, tapping the heat from the earth's crust. Microsoft is dabbling in hydrogen fuel cells as backup power for data centres. Making the grid more flexible is another way to ensure reliable supplies of energy. Tyler Norris of Duke University says electricity systems are designed for extremes in demand. A hot and sunny morning in Texas, say, will send people rushing to the switch on air-conditioning units. If data centres agree not to use grid power at peak times by tapping batteries or using onsite generators, that can allow more to be added to the grid without over burdening it. Data-centre operators that do this could get priority in the queue for power from the grid. xai, owned by Elon Musk, participated in a flexibility programme for its data centre in Memphis. SemiAnalysis, a research outfit, argues that this helped it get faster access to electricity. The tech giants are providing support in other ways, too. Google has teamed up with ctc Global, a cable-maker, to help utilities and states upgrade transmission lines. A final strategy is to go abroad. Data centre capacity is set to soar in the Gulf countries, where big sovereign-wealth funds are bankrolling developments. Spain, with its abundant solar power, is another popular destination. Malaysia had been Asia's data-centre hotspot, thanks in part to cheap energy , though a surcharge for data centres which came into force on July 1st may put off the hyperscalers. Making the right choice is crucial. Building huge data centres can run into trouble. 'Project Stargate', led by Openai, an ai startup, and SoftBank, a giant Japanese tech investor, has reportedly hit setbacks after disagreements about power providers and site selection. Peter Freed, an executive formerly at Meta and now a consultant, notes that building highly customised data centres for training models in the middle of nowhere may prove a bad idea. 'I worry about stranded-asset risk,' he says. And as no one knows what the demand for ai will be over the next two years even the most advanced ai model might struggle to give definitive advice.
