Back from doping ban, sprinter Dhanalakshmi finding her feet again

CHENNAI: Dhanalakshmi Sekar, once a rising star in Indian athletics and part of the Tokyo Olympics squad, made an impressive comeback after serving a three-year doping ban by breaking her own state record in the 100m.
She went on to set a new meet mark in the 200m at the recent 97th Tamil Nadu State Senior Athletics Championships in Salem too.
However, her real test will begin when she lines up at Nationals next month.
Once among the brightest prospects in the Indian sprinting scene, having outrun top athletes like
Hima Das
and Dutee Chand, Dhanalakshmi's rise came to an abrupt halt in 2022. The 27-year-old from Trichy tested positive for the anabolic steroid metandienone (a performance-enhancing drug) during an out-of-competition test in Turkey.
She accepted the violation, which reduced her suspension from four years to three.

Talking to TOI, Manikanda Arumugam, her long-time coach, said: 'When it happened, she was in the national camp. She had no idea how it happened. She says she can't understand it, even now. That's all she told me. And even I didn't push her to talk about it much because she was struggling a lot. My focus was just to make sure she came back and restored her name.'
When Manikanda, who runs the Rockfort Star Academy in Trichy, visited her after the ban was imposed, Dhanalakshmi was deeply disturbed and shaken.
'Dhana was completely broken when I saw her after the ban. She comes from a poor background (her mother was once a farmer), and I have supported her a lot over the years. Thankfully, she had secured a job, so financially she was stable during that time. I told her after two years, 'we'll come back'.'
Last year, they resumed training and started from scratch. 'She was completely unfit when we restarted. She was physically broken, especially in terms of fitness, and emotionally as well. We worked on strength training, endurance, and followed strict dietary routines. Last December, we held a trial specifically for her to assess her performance. We usually train at the Poonamallee Railway ground. Once a week, we go to the Anna Stadium for track work.
Tamil Nadu Athletics Association supported us when we told them Dhana will run this year,' said Manikanda.
But just 10 days before the TN state meet, another setback threatened to derail everything they had worked for. Dhanalakshmi, who is sponsored by CVB Sports Academy, picked up a hamstring injury during training. 'She was so scared. This was her first competition in three years, and the injury shook her confidence.
But she ended up exceeding her own expectations,' the coach said.
Charting the way forward, Manikanda said: 'We are eyeing the national record now. Dhana's participation in the Indian Open, to be held in Punjab, is still uncertain and we'll know only by Wednesday. But she will compete in the Inter-State event to be held in Chennai in August.'

India insert healthy dollop of chaos on throwback day of Test cricket at Old Trafford

For such a traditional day of Test cricket, and one in which India did well to put up stiff resistance to a much improved England bowling performance, the tourists still managed to insert a healthy dollop of chaos into their proceedings. read more Rishabh Pant was batting on 37 when he was struck on the foot by an inside edge off a Chris Woakes yorker on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Reuters It was something of a throwback day of Test cricket at Old Trafford on Wednesday, – given the swashbuckling seen on these shores in recent seasons, what once would have been very much the norm now seemed positively retro. A fitting time then for Liam Dawson to make his return to the Test arena, eight years and five days, or 102 matches if you prefer, since he last did so. The last time Dawson donned the whites for England Robert Mugabe was still in power, the Nintendo Switch had only just been released, the world and English cricket looked very different indeed. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As selections go, Dawson is something of a throwback himself, not so much a Bazballian pick based on high-release points and future potential, rather one founded on a long and consistent county career and the skills and nous accumulated from it. More from First Cricket Rishabh Pant leaves field in an ambulance after getting seriously hurt by Woakes yorker at Old Trafford; see video Getting Jaiswal a useful bonus on Test comeback for Dawson The opening act of his comeback story was successful if low-key, showing the crucial day one ability to tie down an end, while also winkling out the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal as a more than useful bonus. Well worth the wait, Daws! 🙌 Jaiswal caught by Brook off Dawson 🤲 🇮🇳 1⃣2⃣0⃣-2⃣ — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 23, 2025 Speaking after the close of play Dawson was realistic and largely just seemed happy to be back: 'It was nice to contribute to the team early on,' he said. 'I've said to a few people that the age I'm at, I thought Test cricket was gone. To be back involved is really cool and I've got to try and enjoy each day that I get. 'Test cricket is completely different to domestic cricket so to get that wicket was a nice relief coming back into it. It's a big day tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a couple more. It's one wicket, I've done nothing special. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I knew what to expect coming into it for a second time so that helped to understand what it's going to be like. But Test cricket is hard, you'll have good and bad days. The biggest thing for me is I understood what to expect whereas before, I didn't really.' Questionable Indian selection and Pant's injury For such a traditional day of Test cricket, and one in which India did well to put up stiff resistance to a much improved England bowling performance, the tourists still managed to insert a healthy dollop of chaos into their proceedings. While injuries were largely to blame this time around, the team selection remains something of a piece of performance art for India in this series, three changes made once again. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep's withdrawals may have been unavoidable, but the reintroduction of Shardul Thakur to the series raised a few eyebrows, and the return of Sai Sudharsan just two Tests after he was unceremoniously dropped – having made his debut in that match – smacked of a fickleness usually best kept well away from any selectorial business. However the far greater spanner into the Indian works came in the evening session, Rishabh Pant rather reaping what he sowed attempting a shot straight out of his own bizarro textbook. Pant opted to reverse-sweep the fourth ball of the 68th over, but only succeeded in – England reviewed but the inside edge spared him the ignominy of the LBW. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's Rishabh Pant was driven off the ground as he retired hurt on 37 on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. AP Ultimately though it was something of a pyrrhic victory for Pant, who instantly retired hurt and is now in the words of teammate Sudharsan 'unlikely' to play much further part in the match – . It was the only real standout event in an otherwise fairly ordinary day, but one which could have serious consequences for Indian hopes in the remainder of this series.

Three Shortlisted For Indian Football Team's Coach Role; Stephen Constantine, Khalid Jamil In The Mix

The experienced Anglo-Cypriot Stephen Constantine, Stefan Tarkovic of Slovakia and home-bred Khalid Jamil were among three candidates shortlisted on Wednesday by the technical committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the appointment of the national men's team head coach. The technical committee, headed by former captain IM Vijayan, shortlisted two foreigners and one Indian for the post which was left vacant after Spaniard Manolo Marquez and the AIFF mutually agreed to part ways earlier this month following the team's downward spiral. "The technical committee zeroed in on three applicants and sent their names for consideration to the AIFF Executive Committee. The shortlisted candidates will be vetted by the AIFF Executive Committee which will take the final decision on who will be the coach," a source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Former India international Renedy Singh's name as fourth candidate did the rounds but an AIFF source said the Manipuri, who is currently the assistant coach of Bengaluru FC, was not among those shortlisted. He was discussed for the role of assistant coach but later the TC dropped the idea as it would be prudent to take that decision in consultation with the incoming head coach. Out of the three shortlisted, Jamil appeared to be the frontrunner to get the job. The AIFF had invited applications for the top job on July 4 with July 13 as the deadline. It received 170 applications, which included big names like former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell. Other members of the technical committee are Shabbir Ali, Victor Amalraj, Climax Lawrence, Harjinder Singh, Santosh Singh and Pinky Magar. Constantine has been in charge of the Indian team twice earlier -- from 2002 to 2005, and from 2015 to the Asian Cup in 2019. The 62-year-old has also coached East Bengal in the Indian Super League in 2022-23, and was till recently head coach of Pakistan. He has earlier worked as head coach of countries like Nepal, Malawi and Rwanda. Jamil, 48, is currently with Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC. He famously guided Aizawl FC, then an unheralded team, to I-League title in the 2016-17 season in one of India's football fairytale stories. A former India midfielder and now an AFC Pro Licensed coach, Jamil was named AIFF Coach of Year for 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. He has played 40 matches for India between 1998 and 2006. He spent most of his club career with Mahindra United, Air India and Mumbai FC. He has also coached East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United. A former player, the 52-year-old Tarkovic was coach of Slovakia national team from 2020 to 2022. He was then Kyrgyzstan coach in 2023-2024. It is learnt that the AIFF is in favour of making the appointment quickly without interviewing the shortlisted candidates as there is a FIFA international match window in September and India play their AFC Asian Cup qualifying round games on October 9 and 14 -- against Singapore home and away.

French skiing federation suspends Olympic medalist Joël Chenal amid sexual harassment allegations

PARIS: The French skiing federation has provisionally suspended Joël Chenal, an Olympic silver medalist and a former national coach, amid accusations of sexual harassment against minors. The federation's move on Wednesday came after French newspaper Le Monde spoke with 12 women over alleged incidents between 2005 and 2021 when they were minors. Chenal, a silver medalist in giant slalom at the 2006 Turin Olympics, was among the France national team coaches from 2013-17. 'Following the publication today of a new press article providing new information, including the identity of witnesses, and following the initial testimonies gathered by its ethics committee, the president of the federation has decided to open disciplinary proceedings with the immediate provisional suspension of Joel Chenal,' the federation said in a statement. Le Monde reported that Chenal is the subject of a complaint for sexual assault. The federation said it will join the legal case. 'This demonstrates its commitment to supporting victims, cooperating fully with the judicial authorities and shedding light on these unacceptable events,' the federation said. Le Monde has said previously that Chenal denies the accusations.
