'Why can't we just fly there?' my youngest questions as we stand on the platform waiting for our train to Paris.
I'm about to go Interrailing with my husband and two children, aged eight and 11. I have never done this before. My youth was misspent hopping between beach huts in Southeast Asia, not trains in Europe.
But long-haul flights for four are expensive, and I'm now more conscious of the environmental impact of flying. Plus, Interrail passes are very cost-effective for families. Kids under 12 travel free, and ticket prices are fixed year-round.
'Train travel will be more fun!' I say. 'No hanging about in the airport, more room to move around, and flexibility to change plans if we want to.' Airports conjure up visions of queues, restrictions and long, uncomfortable journeys, while travelling by train feels far more civilised.

How to plan a cross-European rail journey with kids
Our route takes in France, Germany, Croatia and Austria, with most of our holiday centred in Slovenia, a country I've longed to visit for a while. Slovenia is one of the greenest countries in the world, so it's a fitting tribute to venture here by one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport.

However, booking cross-border train travel can be more challenging than opting for a flight. Along with a myriad of different country and route options, juggling different operators, navigating which routes need seat reservations and still have availability, plus ensuring the itinerary isn't too intense for kids, becomes rather mind-boggling.

Plans are also underway to improve European rail travel, and the EU is working towards a unified

to simplify the whole process.
Seat reservations open up to three months in advance, so make sure you book early if you want to sit together. When you're planning your itinerary, it's a good idea to space out longer journeys too, to prevent kids from getting overwhelmed.
When it comes to accommodation, apartments are also often cheaper and easier for families.
And while you are on the train, a bit of preparation can save you a lot of headaches down the line. Download movies or TV shows to watch in advance as WiFi can be patchy and expensive. Many trains lack decent food options as well, so make sure you pack some snacks.
Trains are a luxury compared to overnight economy flights
Planning now well behind us, we ease into train travel with a short first journey. Eurostar whisks us from London to Paris, where we bed down in a cosy Parisian apartment.
In the morning, fuelled by warm flaky croissants, we hop on the metro to Parc de La Villette, a fantastic family-friendly urban park in the northeast of the capital and wander back slowly along Canal St. Martin to Gare de l'Est for our onward journey—first to Stuttgart and then overnight to Zagreb.

The novelty factor is still high, and my two children love sitting on the upper deck of the German train. 'It travels at 199 miles an hour!' exclaims my eldest, tackling a giant pretzel. Jaws drop when they find out that some

Travelling overnight by train is also unique. Our private couchette had six small bunks, a lockable door and a bottle of water and a croissant each. Some of the newer sleeper trains have showers and room service on board, though I'm selective in who I divulge this information to in case the kids feel like they're missing out.
Either way, it's luxury compared to flying economy class overnight, and still a fraction of the price. And boarding just 15 minutes before departure? A dream.
Cable cars and wacky museums in Zagreb
We wake to softly falling snow in Austria before rattling alongside ice-cold rivers towards Zagreb, Croatia's overlooked capital. The city greets us with a blast — quite literally — as the Gric cannon fires its daily noon salute from the Lotrščak Tower, a tradition that's held strong since 1877.

Zagreb's quirks are further unveiled as we admire grand Austro-Hungarian façades rubbing shoulders with Brutalist buildings, a pretty botanical garden adjacent to graffitied walls, and damaged steps patched up with colourful mosaic tiles. There are nearly 50 weird and wonderful museums here too, covering everything from broken relationships to hangovers.
We plump for the more kid-appropriate museum of laughter, the Ha Ha House, with its upside-down rooms and distorted mirrors.
Our friend Ivo tells us Mount Medvicnica, to the north of the city, is a beloved part of Zagreb, so we board a cable car and ride dizzyingly high up to explore its trails.

Moods are good back on board the train, too. The rhythmic clickety-clack of old carriages and the ever-changing European landscapes unfolding are soporific and soothing. We settle into the enforced downtime easily with Uno battles, books and a little bit of screen time. A young interrailer remarks that our trip is ''so cool,' and my boys grin, chuffed they have impressed her.
The urban sprawl of Zagreb soon gives way to forested hills, wide turquoise rivers, and clusters of houses on the hills. 'Look! A mountain! With snow!' shouts my youngest, as we forge into Slovenia.
Fairytale castles and crowd-free skiing in Slovenia
Slovenia's
enchanting capital, Ljubljana, is instantly likeable. A compact, car-free centre of cobbled streets and café-lined riverbanks, it's made for wandering. Trees are in blossom everywhere when we arrive.
We stretch our legs further in Ljubljana's prettiest public space, Tivoli Park, before stomping up to the medieval castle's viewing tower for sweeping views of the winding River Ljubljanica and the red-roofed city.

At Bled, we bike ride around Slovenia's most famous lake, admiring the fairytale cliff-top castle and 15th-century Gothic church marooned on a tiny central island.

But it is

we truly fall for. It's quieter and wilder. There's no station here, so more effort is needed to reach it. Better for us, I think, as we canoe through water as clear as glass on Lake Bohinj, with only the surrounding mountains for company.
Late afternoons bring the fresh mountain air and the kitesurfers, so we head home for thick hot chocolate and Bled cake, a cream and calorie-filled local pastry, which tastes as good as it looks.
Central to Bohinj are the mountains, and we are lucky enough to catch the tail end of the ski season at Vogel, 1535m above the lake. My husband takes off to enjoy the crowd-free slopes alone, and a one-to-three ski lesson enables my boys and me to wobble down a blissfully quiet blue run by mid-afternoon.

The boys are hooked. As the cable car carries us silently back up into the peaceful snowy peaks for another slow descent, we plot our return.
Alas, it is finally time to leave. Valleys become steeper and mountains loom larger as Slovenia moves aside for Austria. Fluffy clouds scud across the blue sky as we whizz through the dramatic alpine landscape. 'We'd miss seeing all this going by plane,' my husband says.

After a fleeting stop in Salzburg, where we eyeball Mozart's birthplace and play at the rather excellent Spielzeug Museum (toy museum), our journey takes us via Stuttgart back home to the UK.
Breaking off another bit of Austrian chocolate, just to check it still tastes good, my youngest muses, 'In the end, I'm glad we didn't fly.' High praise indeed.

Greenland starts football's shortest season after international blow
Against a backdrop of continuous sunlight and cold Arctic winds, the shortest season in football — lasting only one week — has just kicked off on the world's biggest island. The 54th Greenlandic Football Championship started on Monday, featuring eight teams and 20 games over six days in Nuuk, the capital of the semi-autonomous Danish territory. The season is so short because of Greenland's harsh climate and the complex travel logistics, with several teams located hundreds of kilometres away from the capital. During most of the year, the football-mad Arctic island is covered in ice and snow and locals tend to stay indoors. But for three or four months each summer, the 24-hour sunlight and manageable temperatures (5 to 10 degrees Celsius) sees thousands of islanders lace up their boots. "We meet outside and play football all night long," said one player, Angutimmarik Kreutzmann. "It's not getting dark and we have so much freedom." There are about 5,500 registered football players on the island — nearly 10% of the population — according to Visit Greenland, the government's tourism agency. Despite the strong local interest, this year's championship comes hot on the heels of a massive disappointment for Greenland's international footballing aspirations. Last month, CONCACAF — the governing body for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean — unanimously rejected the Greenlandic Football Association's application to become a member. The island's closest geographical neighbour is Canada. Although technically a European territory, Greenland cannot join UEFA — Europe's football federation — because its members must be recognised as fully independent by the United Nations. Meanwhile, the global governing body FIFA requires national football associations to join a regional confederation, like CONCACAF, before being considered for FIFA membership. In other words, Greenland's hopes of playing competitive international football for the first time remain a pipe dream, leaving its national team with only unofficial friendlies. Its most recent fixture was a 5-0 loss to Turkmenistan in a friendly played in Turkey last year. Home and away Some Greenlanders have blamed politics for CONCACAF's decision, in light of US President Donald Trump's threat to take control of the strategic, mineral-rich island. The US president has not ruled out using military force to do so despite strong rebukes from the governments of Greenland and Denmark, a NATO ally. Greenlandic and Danish leaders say the island is not for sale and have condemned reports of the US gathering more intelligence on the territory, which is self-governing but heavily reliant on Copenhagen for funding of its public services and infrastructure. However, Patrick Frederiksen, captain of the national team, believes CONCACAF's rejection came down to money. "We all know it's really expensive to travel to Greenland," he said. Other obstacles for the island's football association are a lack of funding and limited infrastructure. For example, the national team of the Faroe Islands — another self-governing Danish territory with a similar population to Greenland — joined FIFA and UEFA more than 30 years ago. Yet that was before the sport's governing bodies introduced requirements such as having a stadium with tens of thousands of seats, among other criteria. Visit Greenland says that a national stadium has "long been on the wish list for many in Greenland". But an arena with a minimum of 40,000 seats — which would represent more than 70% of the population — "is sadly not in the pipeline," the agency says on its website. Overall, there are reportedly 20 or so artificial pitches across the island. While the island's leading football figures have expressed their frustration at the rejection by CONCACAF, they say there are still bright spots on the horizon. Greenland is planning to play against Tuvalu — the Polynesian island-nation in the South Pacific — later this year to raise awareness around climate change, the manager of the national team has said. There will also be fixtures against the national amateur teams of Austria and Slovenia, to be held in Vienna in October, according to the football association. In the meantime, all attention is on domestic football matters. Last year's tournament saw B-67 Nuuk crowned champions after a 3-1 win in the final over Nagdlunguaq-48. It was a 15th title for the island's most successful team, and they will be looking to defend it in the first championship to be hosted in Greenland's capital since 2018.

Can coastal tourism go green — and still thrive?
In some of the most remote parts of the Atlantic, marine tourism is both a lifeline and a challenge. Local economies depend on it—but traditional practices can take a toll on fragile ecosystems. As climate change warms the oceans and alters wildlife behaviour, tour operators are being pushed to rethink the way they do business. That's where TWINNEDbySTARS comes in. This EU-backed project is helping small tourism companies across the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, and Martinique, to find smarter, greener ways to operate at sea. The goal: to make marine tourism more competitive, while also protecting biodiversity, preserving local heritage, and even opening the door to a new kind of experience — marine astrotourism. With nearly €1 million in funding, the project runs from 2023 to 2026 and brings together scientists, tourism experts, and small businesses to explore what a more sustainable future on the water could look like. Dr. Yen Lam González, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is part of the team guiding the project's research. She says it is about changing mindsets as much as methods. 'The marine ecosystem — just like land ecosystems — is constantly under pressure from human activity,' she explains. But change is already happening. Some tour operators in the project have started electrifying their boats, cutting down on noise and pollution. Others are reviving ancient sailing techniques, navigating without engines or electronics, guided only by wind and stars — an experience that blends tradition, storytelling, and low-impact travel. One of the most popular innovations are hydrophones. These underwater microphones are now being used not just to help locate whales and dolphins, but also to give passengers a deeper connection to the marine environment. 'It's not just about spotting a dolphin,' González says. 'It's about understanding the whole ecosystem — how it lives, how it sounds, how it all fits together.' How Atlantic islands are proving tourism can help the ocean
Summer is the peak season for seaside holidays across Europe, but this year the celebrations are mixed with protests. From Barcelona to Venice, locals are taking to the streets, demanding limits on mass tourism that they say is destroying coastal environments and erasing historical heritage. But on Faial, one of the Azores islands in the middle of the Atlantic, they are taking a different approach. Rather than flooding the island with tourists at all costs, local authorities and professionals of the sector want to foster eco-tourism, attracting visitors who appreciate and respect the natural and cultural heritage of the archipelago. An international group of scientists, working in the EU-funded ecoRoute project, is preparing coastal sites that can be made accessible to snorkellers and scuba divers whilst promoting underwater heritage and preserving these sites for the future. Underwater heritage as eco-tourism magnet Until recently, sites like these were largely ignored. "Often, such archaeological sites aren't treated as heritage — they're just seen as wrecks. People don't know about them," explains José Bettencourt, an archaeologist from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa working on the ecoRoute project. The project receives funding from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund and focuses on fostering underwater cultural tourism in Europe's outermost regions. Rather than closing the sites to tourists, it is turning them into sustainable attractions that educate visitors about Atlantic maritime history. Ana "Zuga" Besugo, a marine biologist and nature guide, sees the appeal for her customers. "These are people who want to learn about the island's history and nature," she says. "So I think it's really valuable for us to share this message with our visitors." Whale watching: when science meets tourism A thousand kilometres south in Tenerife, the Canary Islands are tackling a similar challenge. These waters host a third of all whale and dolphin species on Earth, making whale-watching tours big business. But marine biologist Misael Morales Vargas has chosen to keep his company's environmental footprint minimal. Unlike large commercial vessels, Morales's company Biosean uses quiet inflatable boats that do not disturb the animals. With just a small group aboard, everyone can hear his detailed explanations. The real magic happens when he deploys a hydrophone—an underwater microphone that lets tourists hear whale clicks and whistles as they happen. 'There is an environmental emergency, and we need to create opportunities like this that can change mentality of people that can then see nature as part of us, not as something isolated', Morales Vargas explains. This approach is part of the TWINNEDbySTARS project, another EU-funded initiative transforming seaside holidays from noisy attractions into meaningful experiences. "We really appreciate the focus on sustainability and how the animals are treated here. It's much nicer than the kind of mass tourism you see elsewhere," notes one visitor. Back in Faial in the Azores, whale-watching company Naturalist — Science & Tourism, taking part in the same project, has made scientific research part of their daily tours. Certified marine biologists aboard record every wildlife encounter and collect samples such as whale skin particles, and this data goes to research institutes. "We want to be models, to try to create products that also other companies can use to potentiate these links between science and tourism," explains Naturalist's marine biologist Gisela Dionísio. This collaboration cuts field study costs whilst giving tourists a front-row seat to real marine science. The bigger picture The sea-friendly tourism movement comes at a crucial time. Coastal tourism represents the biggest sector in Europe's blue economy, accounting for more than half its jobs and over 200 billion euros in revenue. "Here we have a great opportunity to look at what has happened in other parts of the world and try not to repeat the same mistakes," says Gilberto Carreira, Director of Biodiversity Services and Marine Policy for the Azores. "Everyone recognises the need to develop tourism in a sustainable way." The Azores have already protected 30% of their waters, and projects like ecoRoute and TWINNEDbySTARS are helping maintain this protection whilst building a thriving tourism industry. Even beach tourism is evolving. As marine researcher Carla Dâmaso points out, "We are facing climate change, pollution, and even mass extinction events. But right now, it's still possible for us to change our behaviour and, in some way, help make things better." Sometimes the solution is as simple as tourists picking up litter as they walk along the beach. These small actions, multiplied across thousands of visitors, can keep coasts beautiful and marine life safe. Across the globe, poorly managed seaside tourism continues to pollute coasts and threaten marine life. But the Atlantic islands are proving there's another way—one where we can enjoy the ocean whilst keeping it safe for future generations.
