Top 10 African countries with the weakest currencies in June 2025

For some African countries, the unpleasant reality of currency devaluation remains a challenge even as the year passes its mid-point.
Business Insider Africa presents the top 10 African countries with the weakest currencies in June 2025.
This list is courtesy of the Forbes currency calculator.
São Tomé & Príncipe ranks number 1 on the list.
Many currencies, including the Egyptian pound and the Nigerian naira, have seen sharp declines in value in the previous year as a result of policy blunders, inflationary pressures, and a strong reliance on imports.
But for some of these countries, early indications of currency recovery are beginning to show up, whether as a result of stronger exports, stricter monetary policy, or outside funding.
Even small gains in weak currencies might yield significant benefits and lessen the strain on faltering economies if this trend keeps up.
Right off the bat, a weak currency often drives inflation, particularly in countries that rely on international imports. As these currencies show signs of recovery, inflation rates may begin to ease.
Lower inflation not only enhances consumer confidence but also allows central banks to explore lowering interest rates, which may encourage domestic borrowing and investment.
Weak currencies significantly increase the cost of imported goods, fuel, medication, food, and industrial machinery, exacerbating the cost-of-living issue for ordinary individuals.
A stronger local currency contributes to the reversal of this tendency.
For example, if the Nigerian naira or Ethiopian birr begins to appreciate, the cost of basics may eventually stabilize or perhaps fall. This would bring immediate help to millions of consumers facing exorbitant prices.
Furthermore, a currency weakening typically deters investors owing to concerns about capital loss and economic mismanagement.
When a traditionally weak currency begins to show indications of resilience, market sentiment can improve.
With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the weakest currencies, presently, according to the Forbes currency converter, last updated on the 23rd of June.
Save for Rwanda, the currency value for Nigeria, Malawi, Burundi, Tanzania, DRC, Uganda, Guinea, all increased this month compared to the top 10 list last month.
While the currency values for São Tomé & Príncipe and Sierra Leone remained the same.

Three African tech powerhouses, Nigeria's Moniepoint and Flutterwave, and South Africa's digital bank Tyme, have been chosen for TIME magazine's 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies, a watershed moment for the continent's rapidly expanding fintech industry. Nigeria's Moniepoint and Flutterwave, alongside South Africa's Tyme, appeared in TIME magazine's 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies. Moniepoint was recognized for aiding Nigeria's informal businesses in accessing formal economic tools, enhancing financial inclusion. Flutterwave's innovations facilitate cross-border digital payments and expand economic connectivity effectively in Africa. TIME's prestigious annual list, now in its fifth year, recognizes 100 firms across the world that are making outstanding contributions to their sectors. Moniepoint Inc Nigeria's Moniepoint Inc. was listed in the Leaders category with Hyundai, GoFundMe, and LinkedIn. With 90% of Nigeria's 40 million small and medium-sized firms still functioning in the informal sector, Moniepoint has played an important role in assisting these businesses to shift to legal structures. The company provides comprehensive banking solutions that enable informal enterprises to transition away from cash transactions, obtain loans, and grow sustainably. 'For us, 'financial inclusion' isn't just a buzzword, it's the difference between survival and growth,' says CEO and cofounder Tosin Eniolorunda Moniepoint secured its reputation as one of Africa's most valuable fintechs in October 2024, receiving $110 million in equity funding and driving it into unicorn territory. Flutterwave Flutterwave, another Nigerian financial success story, was recognized in the Titans category with global behemoths like Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI. The company has transformed digital payments in Africa, providing vital infrastructure for businesses to send and receive money easily across borders. In 2024, the Nigerian firm, currently valued at $3 billion, extended its money transfer services to all U.S. states except Texas through its Send App, which, according to the business, completes almost all (98%) transactions in three minutes. Digital payment solutions for businesses in Saudi Arabia and Turkey were also introduced by Flutterwave. 'I wish it was boring, we're here for the long game,' Agboola, the company's CEO, stated. Tyme Tyme, a company that operates in South Africa, joined the Pioneers category among innovators such as SpaceX and Equinor. Tyme became one of Africa's newest unicorns in December 2024, when it raised $250 million in a Series D fundraising round. Meeting underbanked people where they are has been the driving force behind Tyme Group's unique multi-country development trajectory. The Singapore-based digital bank now serves around 17.5 million retail customers in South Africa and the Philippines. 'You can walk into a grocery store in South Africa and open a bank account with us in under three minutes,' says Chief Growth Officer Rachel Freeman.

US Pushes for Economic Pact in Congo-Rwanda Peace Agreement

A US-brokered peace deal between Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda will include the outlines of a separate economic integration pact between the two nations — to be concluded within three months, people with direct knowledge of the talks said. A draft economic framework includes plans for mineral-revenue sharing, rail and road transportation infrastructure and the development of a $760 million hydropower plant on the two nations' border, one of the people said. They may also collaborate on electricity production from methane within Lake Kivu, which also spans the boundary, the person said.

YouTube just launched new generative AI features that could prove controversial

Google's recent IO event showed how far the company is pushing into AI, with Gemini making its way into just about anything the tech giant touches. And, while some of its efforts have certainly been impressive, AI overviews have remained more of a hindrance than a help in recent months. While they are getting better (at least according to Google), there's still some work to do. Now, they're coming to YouTube to help you more quickly gain information. Here's all we've learned about the new feature and why it could end up proving controversial. YouTube Premium members can now see the new 'AI powered carousels', which are intended to help surface information more quickly. It's a US-only feature for now, but when searching for something related to shopping, places, or things to do, it'll aim to highlight relevant clips from videos in a carousel you can flick through. You can see it in action below. Google's new YouTube blog post says "We're introducing a new AI-powered search results carousel to suggest videos and topic descriptions by creators across YouTube. Imagine searching for 'best beaches in Hawaii' — you could see an AI-generated carousel highlighting clips from videos showcasing the best snorkel spots and volcanic beaches, complete with descriptions and more videos to plan your ideal day." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It remains to be seen how creators will react to the announcement. AI Overviews in Google search have seen a decline in clicks for websites because users don't need to visit the source of the information – a contentious subject for website owners and web-based businesses. The potential for a similar effect is obvious – if you get the information you need, will you still watch the video? It's hard to say, but expect discussions to continue in the coming weeks if those view counts drop suddenly. Google is also testing its own chatbot-like conversational AI with more users in "the coming days", it explains. "In the coming days, our conversational AI tool will be expanding to some non-Premium users in the US. Premium members already love it for getting more info, recommendations, and even quizzing themselves on key concepts in academic videos. Try it out to discover new videos or master unknown topics." The chatbot will allow users to ask questions about a video, such as "What is this song?" or "Tell me more about this subject". However things shake out, it's clear Google isn't done with AI by a long shot yet, but as the company faces continuous scrutiny over its practice of AI overviews taking clicks away from websites, it could be a bumpy road.
