The sons of Hakeem Olajuwon, FIBA Hall of Famer and former NBA Most Valuable Player, are continuing their father's legacy in the ongoing 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.
Abdullah and Abdulrahman Olajuwon are donning the colors of Jordan, the country where they were born, as they make their debut in the Asian tournament.
Abdullah, 21, has already posted averages of 10 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 assists in Jordan's past two games. Abdulrahman, meanwhile, 19 years old, has been playing limited minutes for the squad.
Hakeem flew to Saudi Arabia to watch his sons play.
In an update on the FIBA website, he said he is proud of his sons' stint with Jordan.
"I'm just so happy for them because they have the opportunity to play for the national team. It's a great game, totally. They will gain a lot of experience," said the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2016 inductee.
Abdullah also played for the University of Detroit Mercy in the United States.
"I've been wanting to do this since, like, '23," he said in a FIBA website report. "So, yeah, it's been a couple of years. I've been waiting."
Jordan is among the four teams in Group C, along with China, India, and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia coach braces for 'very difficult' playoff game vs. Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup

Saudi Arabia coach Ricard Casas is preparing for what he describes as a difficult game against the Philippines as both nations shoot for a quarterfinals spot at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The hosts and the Filipinos will clash on Tuesday midnight in the qualification to the quarterfinals and Casas acknowledges it won't be an easy contest. "Thank you very much [to the fans] because they supported us. We feel their support and we need more," Casas said following their 84-59 win over India on Saturday. "We need more. We have our next match, it's not [gonna be] easy, it's very difficult. But everyday is difficult so we'll give our best." READ MORE | What's next for Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Asia Cup? The world no. 65 Saudi Arabia opened its campaign against higher-ranked China and absorbed a narrow 93-88 loss. But they bounced back right away the next game, pulling off a 77-73 escape against Jordan behind Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, who posted an all-around outing of 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to lead their first Asia Cup win in 12 years. Abdur-Rahkman picked up where he left off and logged 14 markers, six boards, and five dimes top star in their crucial 84-59 win against Jordan to close out Group C at second spot and set up a playoff duel against the Philippines. Casas, a Spanish tactician, said all they can do now is make the most of the limited hours left before facing a Philippine team that Saudi Arabia has yet to beat at the FIBA level. "Of course it's very important in these next hours to prepare for the game because we'll play against a good team, the Philippines," Casas added. "It's top-level in the FIBA rankings, they have excellent players." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Iraq coach praises Gilas Pilipinas squad in FIBA Asia Cup

Despite losing to Gilas Pilipinas, Iraq head coach Veselin Matic praised the Philippine squad competing in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The Philippines defeated Iraq, 66–57, in group stage play on Saturday to advance to the qualification to the quarterfinals. Iraq had a good start and led 18–12 in the first period before the Philippines pulled away in the third period and eventually claimed the win. Iraq, meanwhile, was eliminated from contention. Asked about Iraq's performance, Matic said it was more about the Philippines being the more experienced team. "I know for a long time, this team of the Philippines... all these players, they are superstars over there. And that is when the championship [experience is] coming, they are coming with a superstar. I'm sure that the Philippines is improving [by] playing hard games, that will help them in the future," Matic said. 'For me, the Philippines is [a] top four or top six team here,' he added. Moving forward, Matic said he wants the Iraq squad to improve by playing more international games, such as those in the Jones Cup. Iraq is currently ranked 92nd in the world by FIBA. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas coach Cone lauds Jamie Malonzo's professionalism despite no minutes yet in FIBA Asia Cup

In a team stacked with talent, some players are bound to log fewer—or even zero—minutes on the court. That has been the case for Jamie Malonzo in Gilas Pilipinas' ongoing stint at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup as the high-flying forward has logged three DNPs (did not play) in as many games. But the B. League-bound star, according to Gilas coach Tim Cone, is accepting the role as the Filipinos continue to salvage their campaign. "All 12 guys are committed to each other and Jamie is showing great professionalism in handling his role," Cone said in a message. "He's been very supportive of his teammates and the goals that we have. His time will come." Jamie Malonzo remains the lone Gilas Pilipinas player yet to see action in the regional tournament. He was sidelined in the national team's first two outings—a 95-87 loss to Chinese Taipei and a 94-86 defeat to New Zealand—that dropped them to 0-2 in Group D. Even in Gilas' crucial 66-57 victory over Iraq last Saturday, the former Barangay Ginebra forward still never got off the bench. Cone likened Malonzo to Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who, despite his stellar resume and proven talent, saw limited action during Team USA's gold-medal run at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The multi-titled tactician admitted he feels worse not fielding his longtime and trusted ward. "As for Jamie, he's our Jayson Tatum," Cone added. "It's hard playing all 12 players with this much talent on the team, and no one feels worse about not playing him than me." Malonzo and the rest of Gilas Pilipinas will take on host Saudi Arabia in a knockout game on Tuesday at 12 a.m. with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals against the defending champion Australia. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
