ACC Media Days: Georgia Tech QB Haynes King Fires at Rival - 'To Hell With Georgia'

Miami Herald24-07-2025
Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King didn't hold back when discussing the Yellow Jackets' biggest rivalry during ACC Media Days on Wednesday. "Hopefully we'll beat them," King said. "I know it's a big rivalry game. The last two times have been really close. Last one being eight overtimes. They're a really good coached football team, but at the end of the day, it's to hell with Georgia. We're trying to beat them."King's comments immediately sparked buzz as the Yellow Jackets prepare for another season under head coach Brent Key, who enters his fourth year leading the program.
Despite battling limitations in the passing game for part of the year, King put together one of the most efficient campaigns in school history in 2024. He set a Georgia Tech and ACC single-season record by completing 72.9% of his throws (196-of-269) for 2,114 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Most notably, he cut down dramatically on turnovers, tossing just two interceptions after throwing 16 the year prior. On the ground, King added 587 rushing yards and 11 scores on 125 carries, bringing his total to 2,701 yards and 25 total touchdowns across 11 games.
"We definitely have unfinished business," King said. "The first one, we've got to take it one game at a time. Being at Colorado for the first game, that's going to be a big one. Just take it each week, make it simple."King continued: "Some people try to make it too complicated and try to make it harder than it is. If you execute and do your job and have the players around you playing at a high level, things are going to happen for you. I'm not the one to mainly focus on individual accolades or individual success. If your team's having success, that stuff is going to come."
King returns for a pivotal year at quarterback, hoping to lead Georgia Tech beyond their back-to-back 7-6 seasons.

The first openly gay men's tennis player wants to make the sport more welcoming to queer athletes

In his second act, Vahaly has held senior executive positions at Washington, D.C.-based venture capital and investment management firms. But about five years after stepping away from tennis, he was asked to serve on the USTA's board. 'As I was learning who I was, I didn't feel like tennis was a safe space for me, so I said no. Fortunately, the guy who was recruiting me knew me quite well and knew how to tap into my competitive side,' Vahaly recalled with a laugh. 'When you don't see people before you as a potential role model, it's hard to know, as a gay athlete and man, whether the organization — or a sport more broadly — would be comfortable with you in a leadership position,' he added. 'When I came on, I was very guarded. Most board members for me were significantly older, often talking to me about their daughters. I just played it quiet and focused on where I thought I could make an impact, which was really on the player development side of the house.' Women's tennis has historically had many openly gay players — including King, Navratilova and most recently Russian-born Australian Daria Kasatkina. But only one men's player has followed in Vahaly's footsteps: Brazil's Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who reached a career high of No. 234 last month. While there is now greater cultural acceptance of the LGBTQ community, Vahaly pointed out there are still a number of factors preventing male players — like his younger self — from wanting to come out, including the potential financial fallout from sponsors and the reality that the tour still travels to countries where being gay is neither legal nor accepted. 'The new generation thinks about inclusion and about being themselves so differently than my generation, so I'm hopeful that [homophobic] language starts to fall away a little bit, that people in our community feel accepted into sport,' he said. 'Once we start to build the numbers, you'll start to see those athletes making it up to the pro tour.' Now, as an LGBTQ leader in sports, Vahaly still faces some casual homophobia. 'There are still rooms where my profile is shared, but they leave out the fact that I'm gay or I'm a dad,' he said. But, 'sometimes, shouting from the rooftops your beliefs or being really firm and in your face is not the right approach.' 'Those are tough rooms, sometimes, when people aren't used to seeing a gay family, but I think humanizing people in our community is actually what drives us forward,' he continued. 'I'm not trying to push something down anybody's throat. I'm simply trying to show how and why we're actually not that different. I think that allows the space for people to be open to diversity and inclusion.' Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has targeted diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and rolled back legal protections for LGBTQ people, particularly those who are transgender. In response to the current political climate, Vahaly said he is 'less' focused on 'what's happening around us' and more focused on how he can use the U.S. Open to amplify the work of LGBTQ organizations such as The Trevor Project, Athlete Ally, You Can Play and the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance. (The Grand Slam will host its fifth annual Open Pride day on Aug. 28.) 'I think about what I can do and what I can control,' Vahaly said. 'What I can do is be honest about myself and take part in interviews like this to continue to show and demonstrate to the world the diversity that exists within our sport and that they should feel welcome. I want people to know and see that this is a safe place for them.'

Georgia Tech Upgrades to FieldTurf Vertex CORE at Historic Bobby Dodd Stadium

Yellow Jackets football joins other top NCAA programs in trusting FieldTurf artificial turf on its game field CALHOUN, GEORGIA / / August 19, 2025 / As the 2025 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football season nears, the team is preparing to host its first game on a brand-new FieldTurf Vertex CORE system. The new artificial turf, already installed at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, will see its first action on September 6th, with Georgia Tech marking its 113th season at the venue. Bobby Dodd Stadium, the oldest on-campus stadium in the NCAA Division I FBS, is the latest venerated college football facility to trust FieldTurf's innovative surfacing. With the Vertex CORE turf system, one of FieldTurf's most popular, the Yellow Jackets have embraced a solution that is used at the highest levels of play. "We're proud that FieldTurf is the new surface of choice at Bobby Dodd Stadium-a monument to the rich history of college football that has stood for well over a century," said Josh Keown, Regional Sales Manager, FieldTurf. "It's a privilege to be trusted with Georgia Tech's home field surfacing, and we can't wait to see the team kick off on this elite system designed for performance and safety." Georgia Tech replaced its previous natural grass surface with artificial turf ahead of the 2020 season. This most recent installation of FieldTurf Vertex CORE ensures that the school can continue to use Bobby Dodd as a year-round facility capable of hosting a wider variety of football and non-football activities. The project is also close to home for FieldTurf, which is proudly based in Calhoun, GA. Only a one-hour drive from Georgia Tech, the Calhoun facility is where the same artificial turf used at the stadium is manufactured. Trusted at the Highest Level FieldTurf Vertex CORE is the same system used at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the home of the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) and Atlanta United FC (MLS), and host of the SEC Championship Game since 2017. It will also be the site of this year's inaugural Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic, when Georgia Tech plays host to the University of Georgia on November 28th. Georgia Tech's new Vertex CORE was designed to deliver the perfect combination of performance and beauty. Equipped with two legendary FieldTurf fibers, the Classic HD slit-film fiber and the CORE monofilament super fiber, the system delivers leading agility, durability, and aesthetics. Vertex CORE demonstrates FieldTurf's unwavering dedication to quality and strive to Change the Game. Vertex CORE is designed using FieldTurf's heavyweight 3-layer infill technology, which has shown a significantly lower incidence of injuries per research by Michael C. Meyers, a Professor in the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education at Idaho State University. The Leading Choice in College Football FieldTurf is a long-recognized leader in delivering synthetic sports surfaces that provide an unmatched combination of performance, safety, and durability. Anonymous coaches, GMs, evaluate Auburn's impressive transfer portal haul

Auburn football reeled in a top-10 transfer portal class during the offseason. Not only did they bring in talented players poised to make giant, immediate impacts, but they also filled needs left behind by several quality playmakers. Four of Auburn's transfer portal additions were included in The Athletic's top 100 transfer rankings, and they are catching the eyes of college football's most trusted coaches and general managers. Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton checks in at No. 7, followed by Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold (No. 31), Virginia Tech offensive lineman transfer Xavier Chaplin, and Miami (Ohio) defensive back Raion Strader (No. 44). The Athletic reached out to several head coaches, coordinators, and general managers to provide feedback for several transfers on the list. In terms of Auburn's representation, their anonymous responses will bring excitement to the Tiger fanbase. One player who received an anonymous evaluation was quarterback Jackson Arnold, who is slated to become Auburn's starting quarterback. Arnold, a former five-star quarterback and a Gatorade Player of the Year award winner from Texas, departed Oklahoma after a less-than-ideal tenure. Despite the challenges of playing for multiple offensive coordinators and injuries to his wide receiver corps, Arnold managed to pass for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns last season in Norman. Now on the Plains, Arnold is projected to have a "fresh start" with one of the nation's best wide receiver units and an experienced offensive line. One Power Four coordinator feels that Arnold is still a great quarterback and that a change of scenery could bring back the spark that he once had. 'I think he's really talented. He still has a chance to be a really good player,' a Power Four coordinator said. Singleton was Georgia Tech's leading receiver in each of the last two seasons by reeling in 104 catches for 1,468 yards and nine touchdowns. Not only is he a solid addition to the wide receiver room, but he is a threat in the return game. He is expected to join Rayshawn Pleasant, another transfer known for his speed, in the Tigers' return unit this season. His decision to transfer away from Georgia Tech was met with criticism by the media in the Atlanta market; however, Singleton's addition to Auburn's stacked offense will ultimately push the program in a positive direction. One Power Four General Manager says that Singleton's high transfer ranking is warranted. 'He's the real deal. He was the best receiver in the portal,' the anonymous general manager told The Athletic. Chaplin and Strader round out the top 50 of The Athletic's rankings. Chaplin started 25 games at left tackle for Virginia Tech over the last two seasons, and the likes of Bruce Feldman, Sam Kahn Jr., and Manny Navarro, who compiled the rankings, feel that Chaplin's experience will allow Dillon Wade to play more guard this season after shuffling around the unit last season. As for Strader, the piece believes that the All-MAC selection will help Auburn's cornerback position, which will also include Jay Crawford and Kayin Lee. Auburn's 2025 transfer portal haul ranked No. 8 in 247Sports' transfer portal rankings, leading several key programs, including Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Auburn filled several more needs from portal talent at running back (Durell Robinson), wide receiver (Eric Singleton and Horatio Fields), and linebacker (Caleb Wheatland).
