King's grandchildren truly step into their roles at Trooping the Colour

Telegraph11 hours ago

Prince Louis gave the crowds what they wanted at Trooping the Colour, waving so enthusiastically from the Buckingham Palace balcony that his elder brother had to remind him to stop.
The seven-year-old youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales kept waving as the crowds below cheered, until he received a tap on his arm from Prince George, the 11-year-old future king, to let him know everyone else had stopped.
As the Royal family walked back inside the palace at the end of the RAF flypast, Prince Louis raised his arm one more time to acknowledge the crowds below.
All three Wales children behaved impeccably in front of the cameras, as onlookers noted how they had grown. They smiled and waved at the crowds calmly, with none of the lively, ear-covering antics of recent years.
Prince Charlotte, 10, was seen in conversation with her mother throughout the day, wearing a horseshoe brooch given to her by the late Queen Elizabeth II and dressed to coordinate with the Princess of Wales in turquoise.
Prince George, now only a few inches shorter than his mother, and Prince Louis wore matching red ties.
Their father, the Prince of Wales, rode in the parade in a bearskin hat with a beard on show, while the three children travelled by carriage to and from Horse Guards Parade before watching the long ceremony from the windows of the former office of the Duke of Wellington, under the eye of their long-serving nanny Maria.
The Duchess of Edinburgh was seen entertaining Prince Louis, whose two front teeth are growing in after he was seen with a gap at VE Day, by pointing out elements of the ceremony.
On the balcony of Buckingham Palace later, the three children watched the military helicopter and aeroplanes fly overhead.
Gone were the animated gestures and gasps of their younger years, replaced by conversation and asking questions of their father standing behind them.
As they recognised the sounds of the national anthem, the seventh rendition of God Save the King heard during the day's proceedings, all three stood up straight with their hands by their sides.
When a cheer went up at the end, Prince Louis followed the lead of his grandfather the King to resume waving as people on the Mall below cheered.
It was a very different Louis from previous years, when he gained something of a reputation for entertaining admirers with his reactions during royal events.
During the VE Day celebrations earlier this year, th e young prince appeared to playfully imitate George as the siblings watched the military procession from the Queen Victoria Memorial, copying the way his brother flicked his hair.
He similarly stole the show at last year's Trooping the Colour ceremony, dancing during the quick march of the Scots Guards to Highland Laddie.
During the 2023 Trooping the Colour parade, Louis, then five, held his nose as his carriage passed some horse manure, and in 2022, he covered his ears with his hands and looked to be screaming during the noisy flypast for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Anthony Horowitz: Don't call me Grandpa, I'm not in the corner dribbling

It is the question facing all men if they are lucky enough to become a grandparent: what would you like to be called by the next generation: Granddad, Grandpa, Grandfather or Gramps? For the bestselling author, Anthony Horowitz, who has two grandchildren, Leander, two, and Cosima, eight months, the answer is none of the above. He said the word grandfather 'carries too much baggage. You know, it says you're old. It says you're superannuated. It says you're sitting in a corner dribbling. It says you are grey. It says you are sort of no longer at the centre of things'. Best known for his children's spy books, the Alex Rider series, which have sold more than 19 million copies worldwide, Horowitz, 70, said his aversion to the word grandfather was partly linked to his deeply 'unpleasant' grandmother.

Lip reader reveals what cheeky Louis asked George from carriage

George, 11, with his cheeky younger brother Louis, seven, were spotted arriving for the King's birthday celebrations were seen grinning and deep in conversation as the open carriage rolled along the Mall A lip reader has revealed what Prince Louis asked his brother Prince George as the royals arrived for Trooping the Colour today. Cheers erupted from the crowds as George, 11, with his cheeky younger brother Louis, seven, were spotted arriving for the King's birthday celebrations. The two brothers were seen grinning and deep in conversation as the open carriage rolled along the Mall on a glorious sunny morning. ‌ Now, a professional reader has revealed exactly what she thinks the young pair were talking about. ‌ The expert told The Sun how Louis asks George: "Should I wave?" George then turns to his younger brother and is said to have replied: "It's up to you, I can't believe how sunny it is.' Louis then says "let's do it together" before the brothers wave to the cheering crowds, the lip reader revealed. Prince Louis showed off a major change at Trooping the Colour yesterday - but still had Prince George and Princess Charlotte to keep him on track, according to an expert. The seven-year-old who has long delighted the crowds at major royal events thanks to his cheeky personality was back again charming royal fans. And while charming spectators, body language expert Judi James believes he gave a glimpse into his potential future. She told the Mirror: "Prince Louis's body language on the balcony suggested he's grown from the playful member of the royal firm into a fully fledged plane-spotter. "He looked more focused than fidgety, watching each aircraft as they flew overhead before turning to his dad in what looked like an attempt to identify them. The avid nods from William and the smiles of pride from Kate suggested he was correct with them all, too. With a father and grandad both pilots, there are signs this might be a future career for Louis. "He is also a very confident-looking young royal too. Charles nudged him to chat and Louis was the one lingering longest to wave to the crowds, only turning to go in when Charlotte ushered him." During the balcony moment, members could be seen chatting to each other as the planes flew over the palace. Spectators in The Mall cheered as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – the Red Arrows – flew overhead releasing colourful trails of red, white, and blue smoke. This year marks the third Trooping the Colour parade of Charles' reign. The colour – regimental flag – being trooped this year is the King's Colour of Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards, also known as the sovereign's bodyguard and which is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year.
