The Thai economy improved in April from March, driven by the manufacturing sector after a sharp increase in exports drove inventory replenishment and also helped by a slight rise in tourism, the central bank said in a report on Friday. It was too early to see adverse impacts from the U.S. tariff policy, which was announced in early April, the Bank of Thailand said, noting that private investment continued to expand. And while the tourism sector slightly improved from March, it remained weaker compared to the same period last year."Although exports to the U.S. slowed slightly, they remained at a high level," the central bank said.Total exports rose 9.9% in April from a year earlier and imports increased by 17.3%, the BOT said, leading to a trade deficit of $1.4 billion. Thailand recorded a current account deficit of $1.5 billion in April.

ASIA RICE-Indian rates fall to two-year low on robust rains, weaker rupee

(Repeats story published on Thursday with no changes to text) India rates fall to $380-$386 per ton Thai rice demand remains weak Philippines to diversify import sources away from Vietnam - trader June 5 (Reuters) - Indian rice export prices fell to their lowest level in two years this week due to depreciation of the rupee and expectations that a second year of robust monsoon rains would lead to another bumper crop, while Thailand saw muted demand. India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $380-$386 per ton, down from the last week's $382-$389. Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $373 to $378 per ton this week. "India is poised to harvest another bumper crop if monsoon rains remain conducive. This will add to already overflowing stocks," said a Kolkata-based trader. The country last month raised the price at which it will buy the new-season common rice paddy variety from local farmers by 3%, the lowest increase in five years, as New Delhi struggles to manage overflowing granaries after last year's record harvest. Meanwhile, Thailand's 5% broken rice held at $410 per tonne, from $405-$410 per tonne last week. "Demand is not good at all," while supply has been ample, said a Bangkok-based trader. "The Philippines and Indonesia are not buying large lots this year." Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at $396 per metric ton, unchanged from a week ago, according to Vietnam Food Association. "The Philippines is seeking to diversify its sources of rice supplies and this might have a certain impact on Vietnam as the Philippines is the largest buyer," a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said. The trader, however, said Vietnam is also seeking to increase the proportion of high-quality rice for markets such as Japan and Europe at higher prices. "We have noticed that the Philippines has cut down on their purchases from Vietnam," another trader based in the city said.

Rupee closes stronger despite headwinds; ends 10 paise higher at 85.80/$

The Indian Rupee regained some ground lost in the previous session, even as the dollar index and oil prices remained on the higher side. The domestic currency appreciated 10 paise to end at 85.80 against the greenback, after closing at 85.90 on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The local unit slipped below the 86 mark during Wednesday's session, weighed down by dollar demand from foreign investors. The currency was down by about 0.4 per cent this year so far, while regional peers such as the Korean won, Thai baht, and Malaysian ringgit have gained from the dollar weakening, according to Reuters. During the day, Asian currencies were mostly higher. The rupee has been the worst-performing currency this year, despite a 7.5 per cent GDP growth in the last quarter, taking full-year growth to 6.5 per cent, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Meanwhile, all eyes will now be on the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI 's) six-member monetary policy committee (MPC), which began its meeting on Wednesday and is expected to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 per cent. The committee is scheduled to announce its policy review on Friday. The dollar index was marginally higher after data showed hiring growth fell to the slowest pace in two years. Private-sector payrolls increased by 37,000 last month, according to ADP Research, as calls for rate cuts by the Federal Reserve grew. The possibility of a rate cut in September has risen up to 75 per cent, per CME's FedWatch tool. Interest rate futures are pricing in muted odds of Fed cuts in June and July, as per reports. Additionally, the US Federal Reserve's 'Beige Book' report on the economic conditions noted that "economic activity has declined slightly since the previous report," released on April 23. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.07 per cent at 98.86.
